AUGUST 2014 Brandenburg United Methodist Church Steeple Bell One of the things our district su- perintendents tell us time and again as United Methodist pastors coming into a brand new appointment is do NOT attempt to institute any ma- jor changes within our new church for a full year. Instead, we are usu- ally advised to continue on with the programs and leadership we inherit from the outgoing pastor, spending the first year getting to know the peo- ple and allowing them time to get to know and trust us. Generally speak- ing, this is very wise counsel. How- ever, it became pretty obvious pretty quickly after our arrival at Branden- burg UMC (in early summer 2008) that there was a strong desire to see the early worship service go from ‘informal’ to fully ‘contemporary,’ to recruit a full band to accompany the praise singers, and to add video screens for video clips and song lyr- ics. Our worship leaders began pray- ing and working, and soon enough those things became a reality. Then we began seeking a worship lead- er who could help us grow enough to eventually offer a third outreach service to the community, and in early winter of 2012, we launched a high-energy Emerge service on Sun- day evenings in our newly-renovated gym. While that service did help us reach unchurched people and bring them into our church, it also made for a ‘disconnect’ within our body. Some of our families worshiped on Sunday mornings, others on Sun- day nights, and we began to sense we weren’t as close to one another as we had once been, weren’t as much one church family. In addition, we were no longer able to all attend small L.I.F.E. (Living in Fellowship Everyday) Groups together, and our Sunday School numbers actually decreased. While birthing the Emerge service on Sunday eve- nings was helpful (its seating, lighting, vid- eo, audio, and musical equipment can be cumbersome at times), it didn’t help unite us as a church like I had hoped. But a com- ment from a parishioner several weeks back moved our church staff to start looking at how we might remedy these growing pains, and we believe we may have an answer. I’d like to propose that we all gather to worship ‘off-site’ on Sunday, August 24, at 11:00 a.m. at the Farm Bureau Building. We’ll sing, celebrate the growth we’ve experi- enced recently as a church, baptize and re- ceive new members, then enjoy a fellowship meal together. Two weeks later, on Septem- ber 7, we want to start a new Sunday morn- ing worship schedule that will look like this: 9:00 - 9:50 – The Blend acoustic service in the sanctuary 10:00 - 10:50 – L.I.F.E. Groups/Sunday School classes in various rooms 11:00 - 12:00 – Traditional service in the sanctuary 11:11 - 12:30 Emerge contemporary service in the gym There would no longer be worship activi- ties at BUMC on Sunday evenings, leaving it available for band practices and youth/chil- dren activities. When the gym doors, sanc- tuary doors, and hallway fire doors are all closed, there is no sound “bleedover” from gym to sanctuary and vice versa, even when the level of music, drums, etc. is at full vol- ume. I believe the staggered worship times will allow for adequate shared parking space Continued on Page 2

6 Brandenburg United Methodist Church August 2014

Our church family gives generously around Christmastime. But who ever said that kindness is only for the month of De-cember? Starting in August, Brandenburg United Methodist will collect for Opera-tion Christmas Child (OCC), a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse that delivers shoebox gifts to children in developing countries.

On Sunday, August 10, Samaritan’s Purse intern Kelsey Adams will share at all three services about the amazing out-reach of Operation Christmas Child. As you shop for back-to-school supplies, think about how you and your family can share the love of Jesus with children around the world. Pick up a brochure at church and drop your shoeboxes off be-tween August 10 and September 1. You can also order a shoebox online by visiting the Samaritan Purse’s website at http://www.samaritanspurse.org/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/. This site provides information and heartfelt stories about the work that God is do-ing through Operation Christmas Child. Please contact Joy Adams at 270-422-5609 with questions.
