Ace Hardware Expands Green Energy
P lug Power Inc., a leader in provid-ing clean, reliable energy prod-ucts, announced it had partici-
pated in the recent grand opening of Ace Hardware’s first all hydrogen material handling fleet at the company’s newly constructed Wilmer, Texas warehouse. In addition, Ace has ordered further Gen-Drive units for another distribution center being built in West Jefferson, Ohio.
The grand opening event celebrated the launch of the new Ace Hardware Retail Support Center in Wilmer, Texas, where Plug Power has deployed GenDrive hydrogen fuel cell units for the facility’s fleet of class-2 and class-3 lift and reach trucks.
Plug Power sales executives Fernando Corral and Gary Bush were at the Wilmer facility celebration to congratulate Ace Hardware and provide insight into the benefits of fuel cell usage to participants who toured the warehouse and observed the hydrogen-powered vehicles in action.
The recently completed 450,000-square-foot building is designed to better sup-port Ace Hardware’s growth initiatives, operational productivity and sustainable service capabilities. The site features nearly 90 loading docks where delivery trucks are loaded and unloaded with forklifts that are conveniently fueled in minutes at hydrogen filling stations located on the premises.
Plug Power’s fuel cells have been in operation at the Wilmer, Texas Retail Support Center for the last three months. Efficient run-time results there have given Ace Hardware the confidence to move forward with the deployment of GenDrive units at the distribution center now under construction in Ohio. Upon completion of the Ohio site, Ace Hardware will have over 130 hydrogen-powered vehicles within its organization.
“On behalf of Plug Power, I am happy to congratulate Ace Hardware on the grand opening of its new Texas distribu-tion center and launch of the all hydro-gen GenDrive-powered forklift fleet,” said Fernando Corral, Plug Power’s Vice President of Sales. “Our team is extremely pleased to know that the Gen-Drive fuel cell units deployed in Wilmer are beginning to provide strong operat-ing efficiencies and we look forward to installing the next round of GenDrive units for Ace at its new facility in Ohio.”
“Now that Ace Hardware’s state-of-the-art retail support center is operating, we can see what a positive difference it makes to have Plug Power’s hydrogen fuel cells in our lift trucks,” said Rick Whitson, Vice President of Retail Sup-port, Ace Hardware Corporation. “Our material handling equipment drivers can re-fuel quickly, and maintain a clean space, while supporting our efforts to use clean energy.”
Ace Hardware’s West Jefferson, Ohio Retail Support center will span approxi-mately 534,000 square feet. Ace Hard-ware plans to use the GenDrive units for its material handling fleet at the facility.

ABC’s of Rebuilt Horizontal Carousels
The full benefits of Horizontal Carousels MAY not be fully un-derstood by those that typically
utilize rack and fixed shelving. To better understand this EFFICIENCY TECH-NOLOGY, check out the notations and contact information noted below.
What are Horizontal Carousels?Horizontal carousels are shelving rotating on a track. Carousels deliver parts to the operator instead of the picker walking to the location, and combined with software and pick-to-light, allow a single operator to pick multiple (typically between 8-16) orders in a single picking batch. Because there are 2-4 carousels per pod, when the operator is picking an item from one carousel, the adjacent carousels auto-matically preposition for the next pick to eliminate waiting. Carousel technology allows a single operator to accurately complete hundreds of item transactions per hour in a fraction of the space of shelving.
How many items (SKU’s) fit in a carousel? This depends on your volume per SKU. Setups range from 4,000 to 12,000 cubic feet of storage per carousel pod. Typical SKU locations range from 0.25 to 2 cubic feet per slot, and completely flexible within the system. Contact your local AS/R Dealer or AS/R directly to evaluate.
What kind of picking performance can I expect?Anywhere from 200-400 transactions (lines) per hour in a “pick-&-toss” envi-ronment. Scanning, counting, bagging, or labeling at the carousel station can adjust this rate.
How much faster are carousels than manual picking? That depends. Let’s say your manual pickers are currently doing 50 lines (transactions) per hour. 25-35 of the transactions are likely coming from faster moving SKU’s only take 15-20 minutes to pick. The other 15-25 items (slow to medium activity) are the time hogs, as pickers must walk a further distance between each pick. These slow to medium movers are usually good
candidates for carousels, as the carou-sel eliminates walking and searching for the item. Now let’s say the same item is requested multiple times throughout the day. In manual picking, the picker must return to the same location multiple times for the same part. In a carousel batch picking environment, the item presents itself once, and allocates to each order requiring the item. To determine actual gains – figure out the time it takes to pick your slow to medium items and compare against 200-400 carousel transactions per hour. Contact your local AS/R Sys-tems Dealer or AS/R Systems directly to help with your evaluation.
Do Carousels save space?Yes. Because there’s no need for opera-tor aisles, and available building height utilized - your picking areas will be consolidated. Contact your local AS/R Dealer or AS/R Systems directly to q uantify exactly how much floor space will be saved.
Can I scan products at the carousel?Of course. Also, since the operator is al-ways at their own controlled workstation, there’s no need to introduce an RF scan-ner. Scanning can be performed with a simple, $100 keyboard wedge scanner attached to the PC via cable or wireless.
What is Carousel Pick-to-Light?Pick-to-light displays guide the operator to the correct location by pointing to the desired SKU and displaying the request-ed item quantity. If multiple orders require the same product, the item quantity is summed & spread across the orders via pick-to-light (and mirrored on the operator PC screen). For example, if 10 orders all require 5 units of SKU “ABC”, the display will point and illuminate “50” (quantity to pick) at the location contain-ing “ABC”. The 10 pick-to-light displays pointing to each order box will illuminate quantity “5” above the order. The opera-tor grabs 50 units from the carousel, and places 5 units in each of the 10 orders.
How do Carousels improve picking accuracy?Carousels improve accuracy by illuminat-ing the location and quantity of the item to pick, and by double-checking the cor-rect item selecting through scanning its barcode (it applicable). Customers may also scan the order when placing the item into the order box for a triple-check.
How do I put items away into the system?
Putaway is the reverse of batch-picking. The operator scans multiple items into a putaway batch, and the carousels pre-position automatically to the correct location for putaway.
How many orders can I pick in a single batch? As many as you’d like, and limited only by the number of orders you can physi-cally fit into the operator station. Typi-cal setups pick 8-16 orders per batch; however some customers pick 100’s of orders in a single batch.
What if my warehouse has other picking areas? Not a problem. Operators simply partially fill orders from the carousel and pass them onto the off-carousel operator for top-up. Another scenario is to pass carousel and off-carousel items to a separate area for consolidation.
I have 30’ tall ceilings in my building. Can Carousels be stacked on top of each other?
Of course. Horizontal carousels can sit on top of each other to maximize available building height. A platform is introduced at the front end of the system for the operator. Lifting or conveying de-vices can be introduced to move product between levels.
What happens if the Carousels break down?Although carousel downtime is rare, AS/R recommends following a quarterly PM schedule to discover minor issues before they become problems. If issues do arise, operators can spin the equip-ment via footswitch instead of by PC for a short term solution before an AS/R technician solves the problem over the phone or onsite. Keep in mind that carousels spaced accordingly can also be 100% accessed just like normal pick shelving during downtime.

Wynright Ratchets up Aftermarket Client Care to Address Customer Growth, Marketplace RealitiesWynparts e-commerce site now offering 20,000 spare parts; integrated spare parts lists enhance user experience
W ynright Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daifuku Webb and a leading U.S.-
based provider of intelligent material handling systems, announced several new initiatives to address customer after-market needs and to position the company as the premier single-source for parts, technical and field services support.
Wynright offers a wide variety of material handling solutions, such as conveyors and sortation equipment under the Automotion® brand name, warehouse software and control systems, robotics, structural solutions (including mezzanines), light and voice directed technologies, and automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS). Its Client Care Group is focused on helping clients keep their systems
running through access to world-class parts, support and service solutions, including remote monitoring of equipment performance.
Wynparts now provides 20,000 genuine Wynright Automotion® parts as well as those from a wide array of manufacturers – an increase of 150 percent since the site’s re-launch in mid-2013. The e-commerce portal combines easy-to-use online ordering with competitive market pricing.
In addition, Wynright has integrated the lists of spare parts for each customer. The integrated spare parts lists, known as “MY SPL,” make it easier than ever for Wynright’s hundreds of clients to identify and purchase replacement parts – a key consideration in today’s always-on market environment.
“Think of it as going into Home Depot with an aisle set aside just for the parts in your house,” said John Dillon, President of Wynright’s Client Care Group. “We’ve removed the variables and obstacles by giving our valued customers a comprehensive stock of commodity and critical spare parts to help them maximize system uptime. All they have to do is refer to their personalized online spare parts lists, and if they have questions, product support specialists are available to help.”
Wynright’s integrated spare parts lists help people find the “right parts,” quickly and easily. The company is making an aggressive push to be the single-source for aftermarket needs to further ensure its client’s success through increased system uptime.
“Today, it’s almost unquantifiable the negative impact that an idle production facility can have on a brand and its reputation, and its multiple channels of customer engagement. It could mean a child doesn’t get his birthday gift on time and other failures in service levels. E-commerce fulfillment has dramatically increased service level expectations.”
Wynright also is leveraging predictive analytics to help clients mitigate risk. The company can now make data-driven recommendations on the likelihood of when equipment failures will occur and how customers can mitigate those circumstances.
Wynright’s Client Care Field Services team then works to get the replacement parts to customers on a 24 x 7 basis to help them address their needs and reduce warehouse/distribution center downtime.
To learn more about Wynright Client Care and available services, call 1-888-WYN-0099 (1-888-996-0099) or email [email protected].

With the move, the company also brings new job opportunities to the local economy.
Storage Solutions’ new office, pictured here, is strategically located in Ontario, in the heart of Southern California’s fast-growing Inland Empire in Riverside County. Its new 50,000 square-foot
warehouse and distribution center is a few miles away in Montebello, just east of downtown Los Angeles.
“This is the ideal location for our com-pany’s expansion in an area that offers tremendous growth potential,” said Kevin Rowles, Storage Solutions Presi-dent. “We will be able to provide our customers in the western region with enhanced support in all aspects of their projects, including layout and design of warehousing, new and used equipment, project management, installation and post-install services.”
Both Los Angeles and Riverside coun-ties offer more than a billion square feet of industrial manufacturing and distribu-tion space, and are located in the hub of the area’s huge network of transporta-tion serving the entire western region.
Rowles said the new Southern California sites offer the most strategic and economical locations to meet the needs of customers in California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington and other Western states.
The news of Storage Solutions’ move was welcomed by Ontario Mayor Paul S. Leon who said:
“The Ontario City Council has devel-oped a comprehensive economic devel-opment strategy to ensure the growth of existing business and the welcoming of new business and jobs into the community. Ontario continues to be home to a vast, diverse network of busi-ness entities that choose Ontario as a result of our economic stability, trans-portation infrastructure, central location, strong leadership and clear vision of business success.”
Founded in 1978, Storage Solutions has grown into one of the world’s largest distributors of material handling equip-ment. With more than 100 employees and installers throughout the country, as well as many long-term vendor partner-ships, Storage Solutions is able to provide turn-key services for projects of all sizes. Messy Betsey!By Michael R. Creamer
A model Tennant 6400 that isn’t sweeping very well and a person that does not realize that fact could result in a messy situation. When asked it seems
really dusty. She stated that what street sweepers do, they are dusty and messy too.
How the machine got to this point? Well, it just hap-pens, over time, I suppose. Her name being Betsy I suppose we will call this article “Messy Betsy.”
Let’s get back to the Model. A Tennant 6400 Sweeper is a very nice sweeper replacing the Model 235 Ten-nant. It was designed with the main and side broom, of course, but also with the high dump. In the past the 235 Sweeper was available in low or high dump.
Of course the high dump would cost you more, but the 6400 were designed high dump only. The high dump
is a very nice feature on any sweeper. This sweeper was also equipped with either a liquid-cooled engine or an air-cooled engine. A diesel also could be special ordered if that was preferred.
So, let’s fix Messy Betsy 6400 Tennant Sweeper. When the sweeper is not sweeping (probably in the Spring) dust and debris in the air. This is a tell-tale sign of sev-eral issues:
#1 The skirts of the main broom chamber are wore and torn. They include the front brush skirt and the rear skirts. The left and right side are usually the same part almost always need replaced. The idea here is to keep the main broom chamber vacuumized to maintain a proper suction, thereby transferring the debris into the hopper.
#2 Many times I have seen a simple replacement of the hopper filter can do wonders.
#3 And, of course, emptying the hopper on a regular basis. This is along the lines of your simple vacuum cleaner at home. Usually when the operator notices it is not sweeping, only then do many people empty their vacuum bag. You know who you are out there!
Today Messy Betsy is no longer messy. She is sweeping with a happy face.
As always, thanks for reading

Identify Your Employees by the Theory of 21“For every person who will say yes, there are twenty who will say no. For a positive response you must find the twenty-first person.” – The Theory of 21
By Chuck Reaves
The CEO of an electronics company had an idea. He was a solid business person but was not as
well-versed in electronics as some of his engineers. He came up with an idea and did not know if it was feasible. He asked two engineers to explore how it could be done so he could test the feasibility of the idea becoming a new product line.
One engineer made an appointment, and delivered a formal presentation to the CEO explaining why the idea would not work. He had color charts and graphs and even some data that suggested no one would want the product even if it were to make it to market.
When he finished, the CEO told him that the other engineer was in the process of implementing the idea. Instead of developing a knock-your-socks-off presentation explaining why the idea was a bad one, the other engineer had waded through the obstacles to find a way to make it happen.
The idea, by the way, was caller ID – that now-ubiquitous service on most phones.
There are two types of people in the world: the “20’s” and the “21’s”. The 20’s are those people who consistently declare that anything new cannot, should not or will not be done. The 21’s are those people who look for ways of making things happen – even those things considered to be impossible by others.
There are two types of 20’s: Negative 20’s and Positive 20’s.
Negative 20’s are easy to spot and you already know who most of them are in your organization and in your life. You know that if you bring a new idea to them they will shoot it down. Immediately and out of habit, they will let you know in no uncertain terms that it cannot be done, should not be done or will not be done. If you press them, they will give you valid-sounding reasons why their position is
justified. They give away their position with statements like:
• We have never done it that way before
• It has never been done• We are already doing that• Nobody will like it• The boss will never approve it
By now you have learned who these people are and what a waste of time it can be to engage them. In fact, when you want to get something done quickly and done well, you tend to give it to someone who is already busy, a 21.
Described above is the Negative 20, the people who come right out and tell you that it cannot be done. More difficult to recognize is the Positive 20 because they can sound like a 21.
These slippery critters can delay a project until it is no longer viable. They can dilute an idea until it has little resemblance to the original concept. They are dangerous.
The Positive 20 may say something like, “That’s a great idea and something we need to do someday,” or “We could do that if…” “It will be easier for us to do that when…”
The 21’s are the people you know who somehow always seem to find a way to make things happen. Rather than offer excuses, they may offer alternatives. Instead of saying they do not have time to do whatever you are asking them to do, they will ask, “What is your timeframe?”
To differentiate between the Positive 20’s and the 21’s, listen for delays, “buts” and “ifs”.
How do 20’s find their way into otherwise successful organizations? First of all, there are more of them than are 21’s. In fact, there are not enough 21’s in the world so, eventually, despite your best efforts, you will find a 20, probably a Positive 20, somewhere in the organization. If they are in a position to influence a hiring decision, they will attract other 20’s. After all, 20’s don’t like having 21’s around.
So, what do you do with the 20’s in your organization?
TEACH – The single, most important function of leadership is to teach. You have achieved your level of success because someone took the time to teach you. As you teach, you will ascertain whether you have a student or not.
EXEMPLIFY – Praise the 21’s in public. When your employees know that you appreciate, admire and respect the efforts of the 21’s, more of them will aspire to be 21’s.
REMIND – There are no extraordinary people. There are only ordinary people who are doing things that other people consider to be extraordinary. Everyone on your team was brought onboard because they have a skill set, ability or something else that could make them extraordinary.
Henry Ford and Thomas Edison were friends and mentors. Ford was in Edison’s facility when one of his engineers reported that one of Edison’s ideas could not be done. Edison listened patiently and then said, “Build it anyway.”
Later, one of Ford’s engineers would come into his office and explain why a “shiftless” (automatic) transmission was impossible to manufacture. How did Ford respond? “Build it anyway.”
Two lines from the movie, “Apollo 13” are applicable for every business.
“Houston, we have a problem.” Sooner or later every organization faces a seemingly insurmountable problem. How do you address it?
“Failure is not an option.” For 21’s, this is a lifestyle.

Retail Gasoline Prices Likely To Drop
I f you’re seeing a pleasant decrease in the price at the pump you’re not imagining things.
The U.S. average retail price of gasoline has fallen below $3.60/gal for the first time since April 10, 2014. Prices have been on an 18 consecutive day streak where the current price was less than the price from the previous day, and it’s the highest number of consecutive down days since the period between April 4, 2013 and April 19, 2013, when prices fell 11.8cts/ gal from $3.63 to $3.52. The U.S. average, now $3.59/gal., has dropped by 5 cents in the past week.
“West Texas Intermediate crude, the benchmark for the U.S., traded below $100 per barrel today for the first time since April, reflecting a slow but steady decline in recent weeks,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy. “Over the same period, we’ve seen wholesale crude prices across the country slip dramatically. West Coast wholesale prices have fallen by more than 35 cents per gallon since the begin-ning of the month, and across the rest of
the country wholesale prices have fallen by 15 to 20 cents per gallon.”
“We’re confident that in coming weeks we’ll see retail prices catch up to the wholesale losses. West Coast consum-ers will likely see their retail prices slide from 15 to 25 cents per gallon over the next two weeks, and across the rest of the country we can expect prices at the pump to shed from 10 to 20 cents per gallon,” DeHaan said.
GasBuddy has also unveiled a new website for the media (http://media.gasbuddy.com) where media can find live-ticking averages with the latest prices received for over 450 US met-ros and 100 Canadian cities, as well as national averages and a multitude of other data. Color maps can be created to track prices or changes in price in every U.S. county over selectable time frames, charts comparing prices between areas can be made, with many key statistics on markets updated daily.

Yale Earns Spot on Green Supply Chain List
Yale Materials Handling Corpo-ration has been selected for the fourth consecutive year by
Inbound Logistics as one of the publica-tion’s 75 Green Supply Chain Partners (G75). Yale was chosen for its leadership in sustainable materials handling equip-ment to increase the efficiency of the supply chain, as well as for the compa-ny’s own internal sustainability efforts.
“The 75 Green Supply Chain Partners is a very select group, and Inbound Lo-gistics is proud to honor Yale as one of these industry-changing leaders – those truly ‘walking the walk’ when it comes to supply chain sustainability,” stated Fele-cia Stratton, editor for Inbound Logistics. “The G75 list represents 75 visionaries who demonstrate a long-standing history of driving efficiencies in their customers’ operations and an internal commitment to be as lean and green as possible.”
The G75 highlights sustainability leaders in the logistics and transportation sector. The selection process considers a com-pany’s involvement in three areas: par-ticipation in public-private partnerships, corporate sustainability initiatives and
collaborative customer-driven projects. Within this context, four benchmarks carry weight in the decision-making: measurable green results, sustainability innovation, continuous improvement and industry recognition.
“Over the past few years Yale has re-ceived numerous sustainability awards which further confirms our commitment to sustainable operations through improved efficiency,” said Brett Schemerhorn, vice president of marketing for Yale. “We be-lieve that being a leader in the 21st cen-tury means being efficient. So that’s what our customers receive from us – efficient solutions to meet their material handling challenges, designed and manufactured by a company that continually pursues improving efficiency and reducing waste in its own operations.”
Yale is one of the largest volume produc-ers of zero-emissions electric lift trucks. The company’s products are built with sustainability and recyclability in mind so that customers can continue their opera-tions without having to worry about the lift truck’s effect on the environment.

Be Healthier — Have A Pet
We know that strong social connections make us healthier and happier but so does having a pet. Through multitudes of studies, it’s been proven that pets benefit you in many ways including physical, mental and emotional, from enhancing social skills to decreasing the risk of heart attack.
“I love my doggie, Miss Daisey Mayes,” Jackie Manning, 12-year employees
says. “She makes every day so happy for me.
“I went through some pretty tough times, and without her, those times would have been extra hard. She’s been through it all with me.”
Jackie credits her dog with making her a more caring, self-aware person. It also makes her more friendly, focused and active.
“When I talk to customers on the phone, I’m calmer, friendlier and generally just enjoy it more,” she continues. “It’s amaz-ing how having her affects every part of my life. I’m so much more connected with the people and things around me.”
Robin Kresin,1-year employee and owner of 3 dogs, agrees. “As a new employee, it was nice to meet people through con-versations of our pets. It gave me an instant tie and I’ve learned some new things.”
While summer offers a perfect time to take yourself and your pet outdoors, it also offers challenges. Just like people, dogs need to take it easy in the heat. Here are a few reminders from AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association):
1. Never, ever leave your dog in the car2. Make sure your dog has unlimited
access to fresh water3. Make sure your dog has access to
shade when outside4. Take walks during the cooler hours
of the day
5. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like asphalt) because it can burn your dog’s paws
6. If you think it’s hot outside, it’s even hotter for your pet – make sure your pet has a means of cooling off
7. Keep your dog free of external parasites (fleas, ticks) and heart-worms – consult your veterinarian about the best product for your pet
8. Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats (talk to your veteri-narian first to see if it’s appropriate for your pet), and apply sunscreen to your dog’s skin if she or he has a thin coat
So, cheers to the dog owners as they are one happy, healthy bunch; just be sure to take care of your dog as you would your own health, especially during these hot dog days of summer.

ARA, AEMP Form Partnership Agreement
The American Rental Association (ARA), Moline, Ill., and the Association of Equipment
Management Professionals (AEMP), Glenwood Springs, Colo., have formed a partnership agreement to cooperate as organizations in the areas of information exchange, education/ training opportunities or research initiatives that are appropriate for their respective members.
AEMP and ARA are well recognized organizations in the construction industry, both serving diverse memberships. Leaders of the organizations met to identify where cooperative efforts could further their role in industry education and best business practices.
“Equipment fleet management is a key element to running a profitable equipment rental business and AEMP has excellent education, certification programs, and conferences that provide quality professional development for equipment management professionals. The AEM/AEMP Telematics Standard is a great example where they’ve focused on creating industry technology standards that can advance efficiencies in ARA member fleets,” says Christine Wehrman, executive vice president and CEO for the American Rental Association.
“This working relationship makes sense for ARA as we continue to provide meaningful business information to our members,” says Wehrman.
ARA and AEMP will strengthen one another’s programs by providing recommended topics or speakers for their respective annual conferences and acknowledge subject matter or recommend experts for articles or communication pieces for use by the organizations.
Appropriate industry research will be identified and implemented by the organizations as they continue their collaboration.
“AEMP’s certification tracks, specifically the AEMP Certified Equipment Man-ager (CEM) certification, is a perfect fit for ARA’s members who are managing heavy equipment rental fleets. Over the years, we’ve witnessed an increasing number of professionals from the heavy equipment rental industry attending
AEMP’s Annual Conference and Fall Asset Management Symposium and expect that trend to continue. Our two organizations have a shared value of highly educated individuals for the equip-ment management profession. This part-nership with ARA is an exciting one and we look forward to many years of col-laboration,” says Stan Orr, CAE, AEMP president and chief strategy officer.
The two organizations are committed to an ongoing working relationship that recognizes the importance of each organization within the business of their membership.
The American Rental Association (www.ARArental.org), Moline, Ill., is an international trade association for owners of equipment rental businesses and the manufacturers and suppliers of construction/industrial, general tool and party/event rental equipment. ARA members, which include nearly 9,000 rental businesses and nearly 1,000 manufacturers and suppliers, are located in every U.S. state, every Canadian province and more than 30 countries worldwide. Founded in 1955, ARA is the source for information, advocacy, risk management, business development tools, education and training, networking and marketplace opportunities for the equipment rental industry throughout the world.
Formed in 1982, AEMP (www.aemp.org) advances heavy duty and off-road equipment management as a career. The organization represents fleet management professionals who work in construction, government, utilities, energy, mining and all other related industries. AEMP helps industry professionals attain the contacts, knowledge, career development and personal growth needed for success. Membership helps practitioners operate at peak performance and make lasting contributions to their organization’s growth. AEMP believes excellence is achieved through continuing education, serving end users as a clearinghouse for technical, industry, and regulatory information. The organization strives to further this mission by developing, coordinating, and implementing programs to enhance the profession, and interacting with other organizations sharing common resources, purposes and goals.

PARTS Tech Talk
Extending The Life of a Reman EngineBy John Gelsimino
Upon purchasing a reman engine your dealership is forming a partnership with the engine supplier. Each party must perform their part to ensure that the en-gine provides thousands of hours of service. Proper installation, break-in and preventative maintenance is critical to an engine’s long term performance. The following will cover proper engine installation and engine maintenance.
Proper Engine Installation
The fi rst step of engine installation is the inspection prior to installation. The technician should check for freight damage or dirt contamination.
The following is a list of accessories/procedures that should accompany the reman engine:
• Clean, fl ush, pressure check radiator.• New water pump, radiator hoses and new
radiator cap.• New thermostat.• Clean out the intake manifold and check
muffl er for residual oil.• New motor mounts• New or rebuilt starter/inspect fl ywheel ring
gear for wear• New air and oil fi lters• New spark plugs, wires & distributor cap
Break-in period is the next critical area. Be sure the engine is properly lubricated before startup. Upon starting check oil pressure and running temperature which are essentially the vital signs of an engine.
CAUTION: Never add cold water to the cooling system while the engine is hot. The fi rst fi ve minutes of engine operation determines the longevity of the reman.
First adjust the distributor timing and then adjust the fuel system. Always check for oil leaks fi rst. Adjust the governor to the proper RPM. Consult factory specifi cations for engine specifi c governor RPM settings. Make sure the fan blade is on facing the correct direction. Some blades can bolt up in either direction. Run at fast idle, approximately 1500 RPM, for 30-60 minutes.
NOTE: Applying a load to the engine for short peri-ods of time increases piston ring pressure against the cylinder walls and helps the piston rings seat. This is important because you are “breaking-in” the engine with heavy duty oil left-over from assembly. Upon rapid deceleration, vacuum in-creases and provides extra lubrication to the piston and ring assemblies.
After suffi cient time at operating temperature valve lash must be adjusted and the cylinder head re-torqued. Times vary for each engine, consult your service manual for engine specifi c times for valve lash and head bolt re-adjustment.
WARNING: Failure to re-torque the cylinder head may result in a blown head gasket.
For any questions pertaining to valve lash settings, cylinder head bolt torque or any other specifi ca-tions, please feel free to contact us at 877-303-LIFT or visit our online specs at www.all-industrial.com.
Proper Engine Maintenance
In normal operations, periodic engine maintenance should be performed every 250/300 running hours. This maintenance should include but is not limited to:
• Changing engine oil and topping-off all fl uids• Changing air and oil fi lters• Blowing-out the radiator to pre-vent over-
heating.• If applicable, inspect and/or replace timing
belt. Timing belt failure can result in major engine damage. This is a high maintenance item and should be watched closely upon each PM service.
• Tune-up engine• Check valve lash to prevent excessive valve
train wear• Check governor setting and adjust fuel system.• Check and record hour meter reading
Following this general list of guidelines when install-ing a remanufactured engine will help to provide thousands of hours of quality service. Remember that each time you purchase a reman engine you are forming a partnership with your engine supplier.
This month’s article was written by John Gelsimino Jr. of All Industrial Engine Service. All Industrial Engine Service (AIES) was started by All Lift Service Company, a Komatsu forklift truck dealership which was established in 1972. AIES was started to end warranty problems associated with other engine suppliers and provide the dealership with the highest quality remanufactured engines available. AIES remanufactures LP and diesel forklift truck engines for companies and dealerships across the country.
If you are interested in this topic. Feel free to give me a call at 877/303-LIFT or [email protected]. As always, TechTalk and All Industrial Engine Service bring you current issues that are relevant to today’s material handling industry.

Employer Liability
Forklift accidents can be traced to two causes – operator error, which is due to a lack of training, and
defective equipment. In both cases, the employer can be held liable in a lawsuit when an employee sustains injury from a forklift regardless of cause.
It is the responsibility of the employer to be certain that all lift trucks are safe, free of repair or defect, and that all opera-tors are “trained and authorized”, as required by the OSHA Federal Regulation 1910.178.
Operator training does not necessarily have to represent a major expense. It should be viewed as a means to control costs since defending even a single un-justified lawsuit would easily outstrip the expense required to provide the appro-priate safety training at the outset.
Safety training courses should focus on those areas of greatest risk. One of the most common causes of forklift
accidents involves the operator driv-ing too fast, particularly when moving a heavy load. This is an example of the type of accident that can be avoided by clearly establishing a comprehensive operator training program that complies with the elements of the Federal Regulation.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has reported that there were over 34,000 injuries requiring emergency room treatment as a result of lift truck accidents in 1985 alone. Many of these injuries resulted in severe, incapacitating injuries and some in the death of the operator (documented in the Journal of Safety Research. Vol. 18, pp 179-190, 1987). The overwhelm-ing majority of these accidents resulted from operator error and could have been avoided. An earlier NIOSH report indi-cated that better trained lift truck opera-tors reduced their rate of error by 70% (documented in the Journal of Safety Research, Vol. 15, pp 125-135, 1984).
Factory Mutual Engineering and Re-search reviews the statistics of one major commercial property insurance company, reporting 86.8 million dollars of damage over a 10 year period to warehouses and plants due to the improper, careless operation of lift trucks.
The most effective means to hold down insurance costs is by preventing losses from happening in the first place. The notion that loss control only means more regulations, and that accidents resulting in injury or damage are an inevitable part of business, is wrong and could be ex-pensive to accept. Conversely, working to prevent accidents will boost employee productivity and morale, increase profit margins and hold down insurance costs.

Do You Have Insurance on Your Retirement Plan?Financial Planner Shares Tips for Protecting Your Savings
You have insurance on your home, your car, your health.
How about your retirement plan?
“People have homeowners insurance to protect against fires and floods,” notes independent financial planner Stephen Ng, founder and president of Stephen Ng Financial Group, (www.stephenngfg.com). “They buy insurance to replace their car if it gets wrecked and they buy health insurance to protect themselves from medical costs.
“But for many people, their biggest material asset is their retirement portfolio. When I look at a new client’s portfolio and ask, ‘Where’s your insurance?’ they look at me like I’m crazy!”
Insure your retirement fund by taking steps to safeguard at least a portion of it, Ng says. As you get closer to retir-ing, the amount you safeguard will be what you need to rely on for your retirement income.
“Your retirement income should be de-rived from guaranteed sources, such as Social Security benefits and your pension plan,” says Ng, a licensed 3(21) fiduciary advisor, certified to advise companies about their 401(k) and other retirement plans. “It’s the amount you need to pay the bills and do the other things you hope to do in retirement, so your retire-ment income needs to be a guaranteed source of income.
“Then you look for your ‘play checks.’ That’s the money you don’t absolutely have to have, so you can still try to grow it, and take risks with it, in the market.”
Ng offers these tips for insuring your retirement plan:
Invest a portion of your portfolio in annuities.
Annuities are long-term investment options through insurance companies that guarantee you payments over a certain rate of time, which could be the rest of your life or the life of your spouse or other survivor. Note: The guarantee is subject to the financial strength and
claims-paying ability of the issuing insur-ance company.
If you leave your job, quickly roll your employer-sponsored 401(k) into an IRA.
While 401(k)s are a great tool for saving, particularly if your employer is providing matching funds, if you were to die, the taxes your survivors would pay on your 401(k) would be much higher than on an IRA. That’s because they would have to inherit the money in a lump sum – that could easily take 35 percent right off the top. The lump-sum rule does not apply to IRAs. While your spouse would have the option to inherit your 401(k) as an IRA, your children would not. So, take advantage of your employer-sponsored 401(k), but if you leave the company, convert to an IRA or ROTH IRA. You can also begin transferring your 401(k) funds to an IRA at age 59½.
Consider converting your IRA to a ROTH IRA.
For protection from future income tax rate increases, you should consider slowly converting your tax-deferred IRA
funds into a ROTH IRA. Yes, you’ll have to pay the taxes now on the money you transfer, but that will guarantee that with-drawals in your retirement are not taxed – even as the money grows. If you plan to leave at least part of your IRA to your children, they’ll benefit from a fund that continues to grow tax-free.

GSG Financial Announces New Corporate Headquarters
GSG Financial LLC, a leading inde-pendent equipment finance com-pany announced it has recently
opened its corporate headquarters in New York City to better serve customers and position GSG Financial for sustain-able, long-term growth. The office is located in the heart of Midtown Manhat-tan, an area known for its high concen-tration of financial institutions, large law firms and Fortune 500 to middle market sized companies.
“The opening of our new headquarters marks the culmination of a period of significant transformation at GSG,” said Andrew A. Bender, CEO. “In a constant effort to provide top-rate service to our vendor and end user partners, GSG has made substantial investments in people and technology to expand our market capabilities. Being headquartered in Manhattan allows us to expand our reach, as well as attract talented team players who understand our culture and can help GSG continue to grow.”
GSG’s new corporate headquarters is located at 53 West 36th Street. The new
space employs a modern open office design, eschewing traditional cubicles for a free-flow floor plan. This “open” design promotes cross-pollination between departments and compliments GSG’s strong collaborative philosophy. GSG’s chief executive officer, president and several other members of executive management will be based in the new headquarters, along with its core opera-tions and sales support teams.
“As the company continues on its path of rapid growth, we believe New York City is an ideal location that will allow us to better serve our clients and improve access to capital markets. Many of our largest clients and banking partners are located in Manhattan; our proximity to them will allow us to be a more respon-sive partner and lessor,” said Kiran Kapur, president of GSG. ”In addition, as we continue to build a dynamic team focused on client service, our new head-quarters offers new team members a welcoming work environment in a highly desirable location.”

Hamilton Caster Designs New Inline Caster for Aerospace Supplier
