Greetings Pilots! It’s that invigorating time of year again when everyone is
excited for the new Pilot year and busy planning for our fall activities, fund-
raisers and fall councils! The 2013-2014 Executive Committee has just com-
pleted their August board planning meeting, and everyone is pleased to have
so many new and exciting projects and initiatives to share with our Clubs.
Last year at this time, the Executive Committee began an in-depth study and
discussion regarding service clubs in today’s society. The EC contemplated
ways to provide better service and communication to our members, how to
grow Pilot and how to better assist clubs and members to do what they do
best.
These discussions and the desire to promote and preserve Pilot resulted in
the creation of the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey - the catalyst for Pilot’s
new “ABC’s” - introduced at the recent 2013 PI Convention in New Orle-
ans. Programming for each aspect of the “ABC’s” is now in full swing, and
we hope you will take a moment to read about each and how you can get
involved in this issue of the News From PIHQ.
If you have not had a chance to learn about the “ABC’s” or the many other
exciting changes and improvements happening at Pilot International, we en-
courage you to view the “2012-2013 State of the Organization Video” which
premiered at 2013 PI Convention. It can be found on the PIHeadquarters
YouTube Channel at http://bit.ly/pilot_2013Video. We are immensely proud
of our organization and of the amazing work that has been done and is being
done to steer Pilot into a successful second century of service!

IT’S THE NEW YEAR FOR ANCHOR!
Anchor Club started it’s new calendar year August 1st! To
better match the activity calendar of most of our Anchor
Clubs, the Anchor year now runs from August 1st - July 31st.
This will allow clubs to put an emphasis on recruitment in
August and September when they return to school and com-
munity activities. It will also allow community-based clubs to
continue doing service throughout the summer and the year-end celebration will be the Anchor Leadership Summit
where individual and club awards will be presented.
New Anchor Clubs and Recruitment:
As the summer winds down and school, community and fall activities begin are your recruitment plans to bring more
Anchors in to your clubs in place? We want to hear what you do to get new members! Please send your plans, activ-
ities, pictures and success stories to [email protected] so we can share them with other clubs and also showcase
them in The Anchor!
There’s lots of buzz about new Anchor Clubs starting this fall in Texas, Georgia, Florida and more! Several of these
arecommunity-basedclubsnotaffiliatedwithaschoolasisnowallowedtoreachthe“A”(AnchorClubandYouth
Development) of Pilot’s ABC’s of our strategic initiatives.
Reminders of Requirements to Start an Anchor Club - it’s EASY!:
• Ten youth members to charter a club
• One adult advisor (Can be the Pilot Club Anchor liaison or another adult in the community)
• Sponsor (Prefer a Pilot Club or Pilot member, but can be another person or group that can help the Anchor club
withactivities,mentorshipandfinancialsupport)
• Chartering fee requirements: $10 charter fee. $14 per member paid BEFORE charter date and sent to PIHQ
• Dues and Insurance Fees Are $14 for 2013-14 for ALL AGE GROUPS
The due date for International Anchor dues has changed. International Anchor Dues are now due to PIHQ by Novem-
ber 1st (the prior date was December 1st ). Dues are still $10 per member. However, we can no longer absorb the
full cost of insurance for our members. Therefore, each Anchor must also pay a $4 insurance fee along with their
dues. The insurance fee is also due November 1st and can be paid with the same check as International dues - to
make it easier.
New Membership Form for New HQ Database
An annual membership form will be due with International dues on November 1st for each club and each member. It
will be posted under the Anchor Resources tab on the Pilot International Website in September. This is a REQUIRED
form that must be completed in order for us to complete our new HQ membership database.
PIHQ wants all the information entered into this new database to be as up-to-date and correct as possible
so we can best serve and communicate with our members and advisors– and we know you do, too!
A
Based upon your feedback from the 2012 Strategic Planning Survey, at the January 2013 Mid-Year Conference, the Executive Director and Executive Committee identified and formally recognized three core areas of service fo-cus - Pilot’s Fundamental ABC’s - to which Pilot International and its Pilot and Anchor Clubs will be encouraged to invest the majority of their time and philanthropic efforts. For more information on the ABC’s, please review the training information found on the Pilot International Website at http://bit.ly/pilot_ABCsIntro.

News From PIHQ • August 2013
We are thrilled to share with you that Pilot International has established
a global partnership with Safe Kids Worldwide!
Many Pilots are already familiar with Safe Kids. Safe Kids Worldwide is a global orga-
nization dedicated to preventing injuries in children, the number one killer of kids in
the United States. Around the world, a child dies from an unintentional injury every 30
seconds.Andmillionsofchildrenareinjuredinwaysthatcanaffectthemforalifetime.-
See more at: http://bit.ly/pilot_SKWhoWeAre.
Given our shared commitment to protecting children and educating kids about preventable injuries, Safe Kids and
Pilot are forging a national partnership where we are encouraging our local Pilot Clubs to work together with local
Safe Kids Coalitions to plan and promote events and awareness campaigns on CPS, bike safety, pedestrian safety,
and sports safety. In addition, Pilot clubs are being invited to get involved in planning and fundraising for Safe Kids
Day in April 2014.
We know that many of our Pilot Clubs already have relationships with their local Safe Kids Coalitions, and we are
very excited about the potential for this partnership. In the coming weeks, PIHQ will be working together
with Safe Kids Worldwide to connect our clubs and their coalitions together. Clubs Presidents, be on

New Anchor Awards and Criteria
New Anchor Awards and new awards criteria are coming soon for members and clubs. Here is a sneak peak at the
proposed changes for Anchor Club of the Year:
• Criteria is being streamlined with less emphasis on creating huge scrapbooks that are timely and costly for
clubs. Clubs will still be able to be creative in their submissions with pictures and artistic elements. Award
criteria will also include required participation in International partnerships and initiatives. Due dates for sub-
missions to PI will be pushed back to later in the spring to allow for district conventions and for clubs to include
spring activities! Districts are welcome to continue to follow their own timing for submissions for district
awards.
• Two Anchor Club of the Year Awards will be presented for 2013-14. One will be for clubs with 40 members or
lessandoneforclubswith41ormoremembers.Webelievethischangetakesintoaccountthedifferences
inherent in club size and will encourage more submissions for the award.
• Each winning Anchor Club of the Year will receive $250 toward an Anchor Leadership Summit registration fee
to send a member to accept the award on the club’s behalf and participate in the Anchor Leadership Summit in
Chicago next July!
• We do encourage districts to follow the same or very similar criteria as the International award criteria to make
it easier on clubs to participate at both the district and International levels for this award.
All of the new awards and awards criteria will be detailed in the September issue of The Anchor!
Anchor Handbook
We are busy rewriting the Anchor Handbook, and it will be uploaded to the Pilot International Website in Septem-
ber! In the meantime, please continue to use the resources posted there now.

PICK ME UPS IS UP AND RUNNING!The Pick Me Ups program has begun at Pilot! It has been an exciting month
hearing from so many wonderful Pilot Clubs that are getting started! This original
program, created for the exclusive use of Pilot Clubs, will provide support and en-
couragement for family caregivers of all kinds by providing them an opportunity for
respite,atimeforretreatandreprievefromthedifficultiesoftheirdailyroutines.
Pick Me Ups will raise awareness for the millions of family caregivers throughout
theworldwhostruggletofindtimeforthemselveswhilecaringforafamilymem-
ber. Through the personalized gifts that will be given through this program, family
caregivers will have a chance to be cared for and supported. Through Pilot Clubs,
they will have a new community advocate!
As we grow this program we are not only helping family caregivers, but also raising awareness for Pilot
International. This program will help us to build partnerships with new organizations and educate people about
Pilot International to help grow our membership!
Many clubs have had questions or concerns regarding the $250 amount listed in the Pick Me Ups Manual. This
number was provided only as an example. Pick Me Ups gifts can be as simple as providing a meal or as elaborate as a
club might wish. The size of the gift does not matter. In this endeavor, it is truly the thought that counts! Pick Me Ups
exists to bring joy to deserving famliy caregivers AND to promote awareness for the good works of Pilot Interna-
tional. No dollar amount is associated with this program at all.
If you do already have experience working with your local Safe Kids Coalition, we’d love to hear about it! For more
information or to share details of your club’s current partnership with Safe Kids, please contact Megan Milton at
[email protected] or by phone at (478) 477-1208 x 300. Also please visit the Safe Kids Worldwide website at
