Not Too Late for Church Photos
There are still openings for the remaining photo sessions in August. To sign up, call the office, stop by the Information Desk, or go to bit.ly/zionlifetouch.
If you have a photo session scheduled for August please remember to be on time (if you are late, the photographer will take the next scheduled appointment and you will have to wait for the next opening).
Lifetouch suggests that your family consider dark coordinated colors and long sleeves so your faces stand out in your photo. They also suggest that you not wear plaids, checks or busy print fabrics. You may bring props if you would like (musical instruments, family bible, etc.).
You will have an opportunity to view your photos immediately after they are taken and decide which one you would like to be included in the church directory. In addition to your free 8x10, additional portraits and greeting cards are available to purchase if you choose. Lifetouch will have your order ready in 14 to 21 days.
If October works better for scheduling a photo session, those appointments will be available the first week of September online, at the Information Desk or at the church office.
Please contact Dawn or Ann in the church office to arrange for submitted photos, including military photos (763.682.1245 / [email protected] / [email protected]).
Volunteers
Many volunteers will be needed to make this directory a success. Please contact Dawn Bestick or Ann Lyons in the church office if you are able to help. Volunteer

The Round House
The Zion Book Club selection for
Monday, August 12, is The Round
House by Louise Erdrich.
One Sunday in the spring of 1988, a
woman living on a reservation in
North Dakota is attacked. The details
of the crime are slow to surface as
Geraldine Coutts is traumatized and
reluctant to relive or reveal what
happened, either to the police or to
her husband, Bazil, and thirteen-year-
old son, Joe. In one day, Joe’s life is
irrevocably transformed. He tries to
heal his mother, but she will not leave
her bed and slips into an abyss of
solitude. Increasingly alone, Joe finds
himself thrust prematurely into an
adult world for which he is ill
prepared.
While his father, who is a tribal
judge, endeavors to wrest justice from
a situation that defies his efforts, Joe
becomes frustrated with the official
investigation and sets out with his
trusted friends, Cappy, Zack, and
Angus, to get some answers of his
own. Their quest takes them first to
the Round House, a sacred space and
place of worship for the Ojibwe. And
this is only the beginning.

The Zion Book Club is a low pressure
book club. Simply come for discussion
with no preparation; participants are
not obligated to agree on (or even

another stress or

Food For Friends
Ten years ago Julie Kabe and Kathy Martinson saw a need at Zion and used their talents to develop Food For Friends (FFF) as part of the food ministry. It has proven to be a great service area for members to volunteer their time and talents.
FFF provides warm meals to help ease the burden of an individual or family that is going through a particularly difficult time in their life. FFF also prepares frozen meals that are stocked in a dedicated church freezer. Requests are made by family or friends to the church office or co-coordinator. Volunteers are informed of needs via The Table or email. Arrangements are
confirmed and warm or frozen meals are provided to ‘friends.’ Members may also take meals from the freezer for themselves or to be delivered to those in need. Friends who have received FFF meals over the years are very appreciative.
A special thank you goes out to Kathy, as she steps away from her FFF leadership role, for her vision of ‘stocking the freezer.’ She taught many of us her freezer cooking tips and tricks and the art of cooking in large quantities. Kathy led us in many Saturday morning cooking sessions over the years, coordinating the making of 100s of freezer meals that were given to our friends in need. We are grateful for her years of service and sharing her passion and gifts with us!
Julie is continuing as coordinator for the ‘freezer meals’ and Peggy Olson will begin coordinating the 'warm meals'. Peggy and her husband, Byron, joined Zion last fall. She became involved in the food ministry immediately - even serving coffee hour the day they joined! She has enjoyed meeting members while preparing food for events at church or delivering meals on wheels and visiting members.

Summer Bible Study for Women
There’s still time to join in the women’s summer Bible study, All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly. Come to Zion’s fellowship hall at 7pm on Thursday, August 15, for the final study date of the summer.
This study will be led by Pastor Sara Vanderpan. Since this summer study has revolved around the story of Jesus feeding the 5000, participants are invited to bring a donation for the Buffalo Food Shelf. Child care is available by calling 763.682.1245 one week in advance.

Good Lutheran Coffee
JT and Bill Sandberg have had a very busy family life, having raised six healthy and busy children.
If you were someone who did not care for a lot of noise and spontaneity you would have had a difficult time of it in our household!
They now have five married children, 11 grandbabies, and their 6th and youngest daughter, Lexi, is a college student at University of Minnesota, Morris.
Now I am faced with the empty nest syndrome. My husband Bill and I look at each other these days and say “Who are you again?” We are definitely going through a period of adjustment.
JT is recently retired from 30 years of working in emergency medical services at Allina Transportation. She now works occasional shifts in home health care as well as with the before and after school care program at St. Francis Xavier
School.
I have to say I don’t miss the 911 calls, however upon hearing sirens these days I do say a quick prayer and ask God to take care of our men and women taking these calls and ask our precious Lord to ease the pain and suffering of those people they are attending to.
The Sandberg family got involved with Zion through Jack Carlson, who was a member here at Zion, and was JT’s first ambulance supervisor. They started coming to services at Zion in 1988.
One of the first things they got involved with at Zion was serving coffee on

Celebrating on Sundays
Wind Ensemble Forming
The Zion Wind Ensemble of high school and adult musicians will return on Homecoming Sunday, September 8, under the direction of Lee Kjesbo. The ensemble will accompany hymns and contribute special music along with Zion’s Senior Choir for the 8:30 worship. They will also play during Family Express worship and before 10:30 worship.
The invitation is open to senior high and adult musicians to join the group. Rehearsals are Wednesday, September 4, at 5:30pm, and Saturday, September 7, at 9am. One rehearsal is fine; better yet, do both!
Bring your instrument and a music stand. Music will be provided at the first rehearsal or it can be picked up fromSherilyn in advance.

Friendly Church Forum
Everyone likes to think that their church is welcoming and friendly, but what can you do to help make Zion a welcoming and friendly place to those who are new to Zion? On Sunday, August 25, join the Outreach and Evangelism committee for muffins, juice, and coffee after 8:30 worship or before 10:30 worship, while they share their vision for nurturing a welcoming culture at Zion.
Meet at 9:30am in the library. Signing up online or at the Information Desk is appreciated to help the committee plan for food.
Sunday Welcome Crews
It's a construction zone this fall at Zion, but not with bricks and mortar.
Plans are underway to construct five Sunday Welcome Crews, one for each Sunday of the month. Each Welcome Crew will be lead by two Zion households. Those two "crew lead" families/individuals will manage one Welcome Crew, consisting of 10-12 additional households. Each Sunday Welcome Crew will be on duty one Sunday a month to assure that Zion is a welcoming place.
If you are interested in serving on a Sunday Welcome Crew, contact Pastor Luke, Sherilyn Burgdorf or Wes and Mary Mahlberg.
What Does a Sunday Welcome Crew Do?
The Welcome Crew is responsible for greeting and hosting before and after worship, ushering, and serving coffee in the fellowship hall.
How Often Does Each Crew Serve?
Each Welcome Crew would be on duty once a month. Choose the Sunday of the month that fits you the best:
1st Sunday (also includes ushering for communion at all worship services)
2nd Sunday (also includes welcoming baptism families)
3rd Sunday (also includes ushering for communion at 8:30 and 10:30)
4th Sunday (also includes welcoming baptism families, and it is Sanctuary Sunday so there is no Sunday school)
5th Sunday (also includes ushering for communion at 8:30 and 10:30, and they serve only about 4 times a year)
(Welcome Crews continued on page 17)
Special Summer Music
Use your talents this summer to provide
special music for one of our summer
worship services on Sunday mornings.
Instrumentalists, pianists, vocalists,
groups or solos… you are invited!
There‘s also a special music spot on
Monday nights at Marysville in June,
July, and August.
Contact Sherilyn Burgdorf or Mike
Walsh to volunteer.
The Baptism Class
Anyone wishing to schedule a baptism is
asked to attend a class prior to the date
of the baptism. Expectant parents, as
well as those who already are parents,
may attend the class. Scheduling of
baptisms will take place at the class.
The next classes are Sunday, August 11
and Sunday, October 13 at noon.
Register at ZionBuffalo.org/Baptism or
by calling the office.
Celebration for Amy
The congregation is invited to celebrate
Amy Chalupnik’s graduation from
Luther Seminary at an open house at

Called to Day Camp
Eli Etzel is the son of Doug & Wendy Etzel, and lives in rural Buffalo.
Eli graduated from high school this year, and plans to attend Concordia Nebraska in the fall, where he will play soccer and major in sports management. His hobbies include hanging with his friends and watching football. Eli’s home church is St. John’s Lutheran Church in Buffalo
He started attending Zion Day Camp (ZDC) as a camper when he was 6 or 7. Eli enjoyed ZDC so much, that when he was too old to attend as a camper, he didn’t want to leave ZDC behind, and started volunteering, which he did for two summers. Eli finally joined the paid staff in 2011 as a substitute counselor, and now is part of the regular staff, working every week.
The thing I like most about working at Zion is the laid back atmosphere and enjoyment with the children. My favorite part is making sure the children are enjoying themselves when they come.
Eli has been surprised at how much ZDC has changed over the years he’s been part of it as other staff come and go. Each combination of directors has had their own way of running ZDC, and it has been interesting for Eli to see how all of them ran it differently.
Asked about his future involvement with ZDC, Eli says he is unsure but is “sure God will have me do what's right when the time comes.”
Christianity and the Bible II
Part 2 of “Christianity and the Bible” will be offered this fall beginning on September 5.
Rick Johnson will lead this Bible Study which looks at how the Bible came in to being from the creation of the Hebrew Bible to the King James version. The curriculum includes videos on the history of Christianity and Martin Luther.
The first part of the study, covering Christian history and Bible development up to 400 AD, was presented last Spring. It is not necessary to have attended part 1 before attending part 2, as week 1 will be a review of the spring class. The fall class will cover from 400 AD to the writing of the King James version.
The fall class includes the life and works of Martin Luther, the Protestant Reformation, the history of the English Bible, and more. The full outline is available online.
Class will be held on Thursday nights from 6:30-8pm for seven weeks. Sign up online or at the Information Desk.

community. Fundraisers will be held to
help cover the cost of the event, and
everyone at Zion is encouraged to help
with the event in some way.

Loving With Purpose
by Pastor Luke
I’ve preached a couple of Sundays in the past month on the call to love our neighbor, and in the parable of the Good Samaritan, the question is asked, “but who is my neighbor?” Jesus tells a story where a man is cared for by the most unlikely of neighbors, his enemy, the Samaritan. If he had a choice of bleeding out there on the road and being saved by this Samaritan, he probably would have struggled to choose between the two. In my sermon on the Good Samaritan parable, I ended by placing us, the readers in the story, in a rather uncomfortable place.
We are the people lying helpless in the ditch. Jesus is the one who is rejected and scorned, yet he loves us and saves us from our human situation even while we are yet in sin. If you want to hear the whole sermon and see how I got us to that point, check it out online, but I’ll continue here with a few assumptions.
1. All God’s children are our neighbors.
2. Loving our neighbors is key, and it is extremely difficult (and getting more difficult).
The media wants us to take sides, they love it. It drives ad revenue, draws in viewers, and keep the wheels turning. Politicians want us to take sides because it keep them in office and in power. Corporations want us to take sides because it keeps us buying their brands and spending our money in their stores.
I know that I could find something to passionately debate with every single person that reads this letter. You might like Diet Pepsi for some reason, or cheer for the Packers, or dislike Magnum P.I. Chances are, it would be something even more divisive, like gun control, political leanings, or same-gender marriage. If you’re all excited to jump into the fray on any of these issues or more next time we meet, I’m sorry but you’ll be disappointed, as will I to some extent. You see, I love to argue, I could do it for days. Maybe it’s my German heritage and my dialectic nature. (The purpose of the dialectic method of reasoning is resolution of disagreement through rational discussion.) Maybe I just like a good fight. Either way, it misses the point of God’s call in our lives to love our neighbors if that disagreement, no matter how respectful, inhibits our ability to love one another and others.
Imagine if we didn’t let society, the media, and politicians set us against each other. Imagine if our first instinct was to love each other regardless of issues and convictions on things other than our oneness in Christ. In my life, I refer to my brothers, my parents and my in-laws first and foremost as family. In a family, love comes first. You put up with amazing things from your family that no one else would ever get away with. And they are still family.
We have a bigger family than we think. The Bible is full of statements that illustrate God’s intention that we behave and love one another like family. We are God’s children, we are all heirs to the promise, we say, “Our Father in heaven.” If

know there is really no fast or easy way
to reach our goals, but we yearn for

work, perseverance and commitment.
Making just one small change can add

we aren’t family, then we sure say some strange things on Sundays.
I say we live into this family of Christ to which we belong. Let’s make what we say, what we hear, and how we live all line up properly. God has given us everything we need and blessed us beyond all expectations. As far as Fathers go, he’s the best. Let’s take a shot at being amazing children. We don’t have to agree with our family, but we need to love them.

change? Your health? Your finances?
Giving back? Here are some ideas to get
you started. Pick one or two that work for
you.
Exercise: One Minute at a Time WebMD Medical Director and Chief
Medical Editor Michael Smith says,
”People often mistakenly believe that it
has to take a lot of time.” He’d rather
someone exercise just one minute a day
for the first week of an exercise plan than
set goals that are too high and then quit.
Slow Down.
Smith says, “Study after study has shown
that you get the best muscle-building with
slow, controlled movements.”
Walk Briskly, Briefly.
Walking is a good place to start with
exercise, and Smith says the key is getting
your heart rate up. Start by walking
briskly for 30 seconds, then walking
slowly for three minutes. Build up your
brisk periods over time.
Faith: Connect with the Word Rev. Mark Jeske of St. Marcus Lutheran
Church in Milwaukee, WI suggests
writing down your spiritual goal as simply
and clearly as possible. “Put it on a sticky
note and look at it every day.”
Focus on Forgiveness.

His Stewards
By Mary Abramowski
As I sit and consider my thoughts for this newsletter, my mind wanders and I have a hard time concentrating. The July sunshine feels great today, the flowers outside my window are finally showing off their colors, and the little chickadees in the bird feeder are thoroughly enjoying their morning snack. I am reminded of a favorite Bible verse:
Psalm 24:1-3 – The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.
How easy it would be to take credit for the beauty of the world around us, and the life that we enjoy. But the reality is that it all belongs to God. Nothing that we have is because we deserve it or earned it through our own hard work, but because God has chosen to bless us.
We are all stewards of the Lord here at Zion Lutheran Church, and our stewardship is a serious responsibility. But what a privilege to have the opportunity to share our resources … whether time, talents, or financial means…with those who need us, in order for them to grow in their own relationship with God. He is the source and we as God’s children are His stewards.
May we all be generous in the giving of our resources, as we celebrate our many blessings. Enjoy the sunshine!

Wanda & Gordon Weber have been married for almost 21 years. Their three children are very close in age, and their family is now enjoying the high school-to-college transition years, and anticipating being empty-nesters before long.
I am really proud to see our kids mature and become independent, yet I’ll miss having them, and their friends, hanging out at the house when they are all in college.
Cameron is 19 and just finished his freshman year at Moorhead State, working toward a business finance major. Erik graduated from Buffalo High School this year, and will be beginning an agricultural engineering degree at South Dakota State University this fall. Tori will be in her junior year of high school next year and is currently researching colleges, and is especially interested in finding one that offers college rodeo so she can bring one of her horses with her!

Wapo Bible Camp
Zion kids had a great time at camp this summer and made a lot of wonderful memories! We learned a lot at Bible study, grew in our faith through worship and had a ton of fun singing songs, playing games and hanging out with our friends!
Check out the photos at ZionBuffalo.org/2013/07/bible-camp-photos/
If you weren't able to join us this year, we hope you'll check it out next year! Kids who have completed grades 2-12 can attend Wapo and the Zion Foundation helps to cover some of the cost each year.
Handbell Mini Camp
Grade 4-8
All ringers or "soon-to-be" ringers are invited to the Zion bell room for a morning of ringing and music fun on Wednesday, August 21 from 9am-12pm .
If you're entering grade 4-8 this is for you. If you're new to bells, this will be a great way to learn the basics. If you're already a ringer, this is a good summer refresher. As a bonus, you'll each tie dye a pair of gloves for your own use this year.
There's no cost; just contact Sherilyn Burgdorf ([email protected]) or Jason Chalupnik ([email protected]) to sign up.
Rite of Confirmation
The Rite of Confirmation Service for 8th Grade students who have completed all of their requirements for both years of Confirmation will be on Saturday, September 21 @ 1pm. Pictures will be taken at10:30am.
On Saturday, September 14 from 9am-11am, there is a Confirmation Retreat for those students who will be getting Confirmed. There will be a final lesson, stole making, games, food and more. At 11am, parents are expected to attend the Confirmation Walkthrough with the students in the Sanctuary. This is when the students will find out what is expected of them at the service, picture info will be handed out and other questions can be answered at this time.

Sunday School Registration
Zion children (ages 3, by September 1st, through 6th grade) are invited to attend Sunday school during the school year. There are two Sunday school hours: 8:30 and 10:30 am. Sunday school strives to engage children in a way that helps them to know that they are a loved child of God and that they are a part of God's story!
Help staff plan for teachers, classes and curriculum by signing up for Sunday School as soon as possible! Online registration is available Monday, July 29 through Friday, August 25.
Let’s get excited for another great year!
The Answer to "How Can I Help?"
Children's Ministry staff are going though some transition right now and the best way you can support our ministries during this time is to help as a volunteer!
Many teachers and helpers are needed for Sunday School in the fall and it is easy to volunteer. What's required? You don't need to be a Bible scholar or trained professional! All you need is just a few hours a week and a heart for God and kids! Many people team teach because they aren't available every Sunday.
Talk to a friend and give Kirsten a call... but do it soon! Teachers need to be all lined up by the end of August. Don't miss out on this fun and rewarding opportunity! You can be a part of something BIG... helping kids to know God's love!
P.S. Teacher trainings will be Saturday, September 7 from 9-11 am and Thursday, September 12 from 6-8 pm... choose one and mark your calendar now!
Staff Changes
Zion’s Co Director of Children and Family Ministry, Rachel Smith, has resigned. Like you, the church staff are disappointed to lose such a great person and co-worker. While Rachel has deeply enjoyed working in Children’s Ministry, in the course of moving from one job to another and the first two months at Zion, she feels called to spend more time with her family. She felt it was best, for Zion and for herself, to take action right away. While we are disappointed for ourselves, we pray for God’s blessings on Rachel’s new plans for work. Rachel’s last day was July 9.
We will not be filling this position in the immediate future. The Personnel Committee, the Children and Family Committee and Kirsten Kelly, our remaining staff person in this area and will consider a variety of options for staffing that may better serve our current context.
Summer Childcare at Zion
Zion Day Camp (ZDC) is open weekdays
from 6:15 am – 6:00 pm and is
available for children who are entering
kindergarten through 12 years old. It is
very affordable at just $25/day.
Staffing has already been put in place
for the summer, but if you are still
looking for a summer childcare option,
please talk to Kirsten to check on
availability or be placed on a waiting
list (additional staff hours can be added
if there is sufficient demand).
Summer Field Trips
Zion Day Camp will again be having a
few fieldtrips in August but the dates
are yet to be determined. One of the
trips will be an afternoon at
the Monticello Community Center for
swimming). Please contact Kirsten if
you are interested in receiving more
information once the dates have been
finalized.
Sign up at least one week in advance is
required so that staff and
transportation can be planned
accordingly. You will be asked to
complete a ZDC registration packet and
sign up for at least a half-day (noon-
6pm) of ZDC care on each trip day. The
actual field trips go from 12:30-3 pm.
The cost for each field trip is $5 plus
$15 for the afternoon care through ZDC
($20 total). Contact Kirsten if you are
interested in having your child
attending these field trips.

Start small. Pick just one person in your
life that you can forgive and Do It. Jeske
says, “Celebrate the forgiveness of your
sins through Jesus, generously extend that
forgiveness to other people and embrace a
new and better life with God because you
love Him and know that He loves you.”
Money: Put Savings in Auto Pilot Pick an amount to save from each pay
check and have it directly go into savings.
If you don’t see it, you won’t spend it.
Beware of Plastic. It can be convenient to
charge all your purchases, but don’t get
off track with credit cards, charging
beyond your budget.
Don’t Miss a Sunday. Set up automatic
deductions from your checking account
for your weekly church contributions.
That way, if you’re out of town one
Sunday, you won’t forget, and miss your
pledge.
Generosity: Look for Moments to Help Take a small step with your attitude.
Steve Wagne, an executive leader of the
Dallas-based Pastoral Leadership
Institute says, ”Enter into your day
anticipating you’ll have an opportunity to
be generous with someone.”
Make a Small Financial Sacrifice.
Every Monday for just one month, take
$5.00 from your wallet and put it in an
envelope. Take your lunch to work an
extra day or make fewer trips to the
coffee shop to make up the amount in
your personal budget. At the end of the
month, donate the money in the envelope
to a group that you respect, but isn’t
usually on your charitable giving list.

The Webers moved to the area when Cameron was a baby. Their home is between Buffalo, Hanover and Rockford, but they specifically looked for a church in Buffalo because they are in the Buffalo school district and work in Buffalo. At that time, Zion was the only ELCA church in town.
It’s funny when I think back to that time as I had grown up in a very small, rural church (like Marysville but with electricity) and I loved it! I really would have preferred that here in Buffalo also and I was concerned about the large size of Zion. Yet now, 19 years later, I so appreciate all of the people and activities that we have enjoyed at Zion that wouldn’t have been possible, at least not on this scale, in a small church.
Wanda is serving her second term with the church council. She has also served on the Call Committee and Capital Campaign Committee, secretary of the congregation, and chaperoned youth mission trips.
Through the years, Wanda has volunteered in many of the ministries her children have been involved with. For many years when they were young, she taught Sunday school, served as a Sunday school superintendent, and helped with VBS. Wanda was also involved with the development of the Wednesday after school program for elementary children, which has become Kids’ Place. When her children were in middle school, Wanda served as a confirmation guide for several years. Now, Wanda and Gordon serve on the Youth Board which supports youth staff Myron and Jimmy in providing ministries for the middle and high school age group.
Another way that Wanda supports Zion’s ministries is through advertising her business in the monthly newsletter.
Weber Law Firm is a solo-practice law firm.
I worked with a real estate development company when I first became licensed as an attorney and have focused about one-third of my practice in the real estate field. Gordon saw the need for many of his clients to have their estate planning done and encouraged me to practice in that area also, which has also led us to office together and provide services to many of the same clients. Lastly, I also provide a lot of business legal services, such as forming corporations and other types of entities and providing contracts needed within businesses.
Wanda sees advertising her business in the newsletter as a win-win proposition.
It is one more opportunity to support our church, yet receiving the marketing and exposure obtained through the newsletter is a wonderful benefit for my firm.
Zion’s newsletter is printed by Liturgical Publications Inc (LPi). The entire expense for printing is covered by the members like Wanda and other local businesses who place ads on pages 18 and 19.
Wanda says that the staff of LPi have always made the process of setting up advertising very easy.
It has been so many years since I first starting advertising that I have to say I don’t really remember the process of forming the ad, but when I’ve had changes to make, they are great to work with.

School Supplies Distribution
During the week of August 25, about 500 kids will be coming to Zion Church to pick up their much needed school supplies for the coming school year. The recipients of these school supplies are those on the free and reduced lunch program in the Buffalo School District, kids whose parents use the Buffalo Food Shelf, and children referred by local social workers. Each child will receive a backpack along with the supplies they will need for their class level.
School supplies will be collected at Zion from August 4-25. All school supplies are welcome, and Zion is particularly focused on collecting notebooks, portfolios, and cash donations.
This local school supply mission began in 2010, and was one of the first programs Love INC—Big Woods took on, involving many of the local churches to collect items. Since the beginning, the Salvation Army has been a great sponsor, donating a great number of backpacks. Over the years many other organizations have stepped up to help, including grants from Wright Hennepin Electric and Wright County United Way, financial donations from local civic groups (Lions, Rotary, and Kiwanis) and some area businesses.
The number of school children helped has grown tremendously over the years from 248 in 2010, to 328 in 2011, 434 in 2012, and Love INC is planning for 500 students this year! The retail cost of the school supplies that we plan to distribute this year will exceed $20,000.
Zion has been a key contributor to this effort since the beginning:
Zion's Social Ministry Committee under the leadership of Roger and Sandy Brenny have been the lead developers and organizers of the program since its beginning.
Zion members have been very generous with donations of school supply items along with financial help.
Many Zion members have helped with the collection, sorting, and assembly of the kits.
This year, as the number of recipients has exceeded what could be accommodated at the Buffalo Food Shelf, the distribution to the kids will be held at Zion on August 26 and 28!

Our Mission... Zion seeks to
Share Christ’s Word,
Strengthen faith, and
Serve those in need.
Our Vision… Helping people experience the joy of

1. Celebrating on Sundays:
Creating Sunday morning experiences that invite, welcome, engage and inspire people to live for Christ.
2. Living God’s Call:
Engaging people in a process of discipleship which inspires them to
trust in Christ, grow in faith, and serve God’s world.
3. Connecting with Care:
Creating a community where people are connected in relationships and
supported in need.

Wanda’s involvement elsewhere in the local community is also driven by the interests and involvement of her children. They are members of the Rockin Riders 4-H club and the Buffalo Stars n Stirrups Saddle Club. Wanda also helped found, and is a member of, a local women’s networking group which focuses on assisting each other to grow their businesses, pass referrals and discuss ideas in marketing or problems they’ve encountered.
Wanda enjoys spending time at the family cabin on Lake Pulaski.
It’s just a tiny, seasonal structure but it is now loaded with lots of memories of family, friends and laughter – and it’s only 10 miles from home so the drive time is bearable!
When not at the cabin, she enjoys travelling, especially road trips. The Weber family has traveled and camped all over the United States, originally in tents, and more recently in a small camper “with a real bathroom.”
If you own a business and would like to join Wanda in supporting the newsletter, please contact Andy Kobilka from LPi directly at 763.744.6189.
(Wanda Weber continued from page 14)
opportunities include:
Activity Photographers: take pictures of Zion’s ministries in action for the introductory pages. If you already have pictures from recent activities please email them to [email protected] or [email protected].
Photography Sign Up: be available 30 minutes before or after the worship service you attend to help people schedule their photography session (requires computer use).
Photography Host: check in families for appointments, put address labels on paperwork (labels provided) and check spelling of names.
Proof Readers: check names and spelling when proof book arrives.
Thank you in advance for being part of this important ministry to the congregation!

A dedicated group of volunteers have been fulfilling the requests but, of course, needs increase, lives change, and new volunteers are warmly welcome. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer to make and deliver meals at a time that works for you, call the office at 682-1245 to be added as a volunteer in this ministry.
Remember, if you know of someone who could benefit from the FFF ministry, please call the church office, email [email protected] or pick up and deliver a meal from the church freezer.

Marysville Worship
Services are held each Monday evening at
7pm at the Historic Marysville Church, on
County Road 9 between Buffalo and
Waverly, starting Monday, June 3.
The same pastors served the Swedesburg
(AKA Marysville) and Carlslund (later
know as Zion) congregations until
Swedesburg disbanded in 1950 and the
members joined Zion. In 1973 the
building was restored to celebrate the
centennial of Swedesburg, and Monday
evening summer services commenced at
that time.
Marysville is just a 10-15 minute drive
from downtown Buffalo. From the
stoplights by the courthouse/library, head
west on Lake Blvd N/CR 35. After 3 miles
turn left and follow CR 35/CR 9. After
1.8 miles turn left and continue on CR 9.
Marysville is a further 2.5 miles on the
right.
Remember that this is a little country
church with no modern amenities.
Check Zion’s home page or KRWC radio
in case of severe weather warnings.

Do I Serve All Sunday Morning?
The Sunday Welcome Crew will be "on duty" for the morning, but each Welcome Crew can decide how to split up the time during the morning. Most of the crew will be on duty from 9:30-11:45, with a few "early birds" to greet and usher worshippers before and during 8:30 worship.
What if I can't Help Every Month?
That's okay! The number of families in each Welcome Crew allows for the reality that other commitments sometimes come on Sunday mornings
How Do We Know What to Do on Sundays?
The Outreach/Evangelism committee and Worship/Music committee will be hosting training events. There's also a possible plan for video training that can be done anytime.
Does This Mean We're on a Sunday Welcome Crew Forever?
No, there will be a chance to sign on again each fall, invite new families to join a welcome team, or opt out for the coming year.
(Welcome Crews continued from page 5)
Sunday mornings, finding it to be a good way to get to know people in the congregation. JT especially cherishes having gotten to know Clint & Flora Mohring; Flora later also got JT involved with Harvest of Hands.
I think what surprises me at times about coffee fellowship is how much coffee is consumed. Boy, we Lutherans like our coffee!
Many coffee fellowship regulars look forward to the Sundays when the Sandberg family serves the coffee.
I learned how to make great coffee from the St Paul firemen who partnered with me during my ambulance days. Two things you could count on at the fire barn were good food and lots of it, and a cup of fresh strong coffee. I always add extra coffee grounds to my pots and I always start with cold water.
JT and Bill are also known for their personal service.
We fill individual carafes of coffee and serve table to table for refills. It’s a great way to get to know everyone, and I think it makes people feel special.
If you are not a regular at coffee fellowship after worship services, stop in some Sunday and meet JT and Bill or the other volunteers that are ready to welcome and serve you.
