JOE SONNIER,OWNER

Greetings from City Hall,

I hope all is well with you and your families.

We are working on some very BIG issues for our great City.

The Comprehensive Plan is underway; I am asking that everyone in our community PLEASE get involved. This plan is for the present and the future of Scott, so any suggestion – any question, no matter what it may be – let us know. Please give us your opinions. Look for meeting schedules at City Hall and in our weekly papers: the Acadiana Gazette and The Scott Connection, and if you have any concerns, please call me at 233-1130.Good news for residential gas customers: your gas bill will be going DOWN by 25 percent.* I have been working with a consultant on a formula that will make this happen. It will be implemented by September, before the cold winter months begin. I hope this will help. Thank you, Purvis J. MorrisonMayor, City of Scott

NOTE: The August City Council meeting will take place Tuesday, August 2, because of a scheduling conflict with the annual municipal conference.

* The gas adjustment pertains to the 565 customers who pay for their natural gas as part of their City utility bill.

Knights Induct New Officers –Norwood Menard Named Grand Knight

Knights of Columbus Chapter 7568 recently inducted its new officers at a special ceremony at the KC Hall. After many, many years as Grand Knight, Ronnie Landry has stepped down in preparation for spending lengths of job-time in Cotulla,Texas (South of San Antonio). Yet, as he passes the torch, he assures all his friends and members, that he “will only be a phone call away.”

Meanwhile, all the new officers were sworn into office by the District Deputy Michael J. Terro. Each officer was presented with the jewels and ribbon for their position, with the wives doing the honors for officers who were married.

Addressing the membership for the first time as Grand Knight, Menard commended the membership and his predecessor, Ronnie Landry, on their dedication and service to the group and community. Menard said, “My first year, I will ask you and depend on you for your support and you can rely on my support as we work together to get the job done and continue on the righteous path of the Knights.”

Norwood Menard had served the City of Scott for over 25 years in public office and also dedicated his time and valor to the Scott Volunteer Fire Department as a young man. Grand Knight for over 15 years, Ronnie Landry said, “Norwood is going to do a good job. With his background with the City of Scott, he will do fine, and what we do always involves a lot of teamwork.” Landry repeats, “He’s going to do a good job and everyone is backing him. … His brothers will know to back him and just like with any group, to get things done, it’s all about doing our part and giving 110 percent.” Landry added a message of sincere thanks to all his brother Knights and their wives who work so closely with the group. Chapter 7568 was chartered in 1980; that’s how long ago Ronnie Landry joined the chapter.

Outgoing Grand Knight Ronnie Landry passes his gavel to new Grand Knight Norwood Menard.

CFMA Grants Scholarships to UL-Bound Students

The Chapitre de Lafayette Country French Music Association (CFMA) recently selected two outstanding students to receive the CFMA’s annual scholarship. Daniel Allenand and Justin Penn were awarded the $500 awards at a recent meeting.

Justin is a 2011 graduate of St. Martin Senior High with a 3.5 grade-point average and Daniel graduated from Erath High this year with a 3.75 GPA. Both young men begin at UL–Lafayette this fall in pursuit of majors in Sports Therapy.

The Lafayette Chapter typically awards a scholarship to one boy and one girl, but this year, no young women applied, so the scholarship committee selected two senior boys.

Every Louisiana chapter of the CFMA has the opportunity to give a scholarship to at least one recipient, each year, to a graduating Louisiana student planning to attend a Louisiana college or university. Winners are selected from the applications that are submitted in March. The applications can be found for the Lafayette Chapter on their website. According to Murphy Boudreau, an officer and member of the CFMA, “Mr. Thomassee is a computer wiz. Retired from ATT, he set up the website and he chairs the scholarship committee.”

The Lafayette Chapter president is Mercedes Hollier of Scott. Anyone wanting to become a member can send a request, in writing, to Brenda and Henry Sonnier at P.O. Box 773, Scott, LA 70583. Since the recent membership campaign, the group has grown by 200 members.

CFMA Prepares for 23rd Annual Le Cajun Festival, August 19-20The Chapitre de Lafayette CFMA has chosen Henri Lancon as their choice for the New Dawn Award. The award recognizes a local youth

who embraces the Cajun culture, either through music, dance or language. Qualifiers range from age six through sixteen by August 1, the given year of the La Cajun Award Show.

The thirteen-year-old will represent the Chapitre de Lafayette with his marvelous Cajun two-step. Henri enjoys dancing at the CMFA meetings. As a home-schooled student, Lancon excels in math, science and history. He likes baseball, football and swimming, and has played the piano for four years. Lancon, the son of Chris and Tonia Lancon of St. Martinville, has served St. Martin de Tours Church as an altar server for four years.

The doors open for the awards show at 5:30 PM and the program begins at 7 PM on Friday the 19th. This year’s theme is “A New Generation, the same Cajun tradition.” Scott’s own Kevin Naquin has been nominated as a contender for four different award categories! You go, Kevin! Scott is rooting for their talented, hometown musician.

The CFMA congratulates their New Dawn nominee.

Board members Gerald Trahan (L), Harvey Thomassee, Wesley Hebert and Kenneth Landry (R) presented both Daniel Allenand and Justin Penn (center L&R) $500 scholarships.

Not everyone knows that Scott has had a practicing dentist serving the community since its earliest days. In the early 1900’s, Dr. André Prejean, the brother of Scott’s first mayor and the community physician, Dr. Louis A. Prejean, would make weekly visits to Scott every Tuesday from Carencro. He attended to dental needs in a special room of his brother’s house. A few years back, Claudette Prejean LeBlanc shared this story at The Begnaud House. She told the group gathered there, that her uncle used to drop teeth in a hole in the floor of that room! We don’t do things quite like that anymore!

The dental office on Dulles Road opened in 1980. Drs. Thomas and Harmon bought the practice in 1985, and in Jan. 2010, Dr. Ashley Price bought the practice from the two dentists. Dr. Price graduated from LSU in 2002 in Microbiology and received her Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from the LSU Dental School. She began working with Drs. Thomas and Harmon in 2006. She serves on the faculty of LSU’s Hygiene School and volunteers for the St. Bernadette’s Dental Clinic in Lafayette. She and her husband, Jeremy, have been married for 11 years. They live in Breaux Bridge with their 5-year-old daughter, Marissa and 4-year-old son, AJ.

Dr. Thomas remains a practicing dentist, at the same location. He moved to Lafayette in 1976 and attended UL-Lafayette (then, USL) from 1979 until 1981 to obtain the undergraduate requirements to enter dental school. He graduated with honors (including the Dean’s Award for outstanding student of his class) from the LSU School of Dentistry in 1985. Dr. Thomas purposely improves his knowledge an skills through continuing education in all areas of dentistry, including sedation, implants cosmetic dentistry endodontics (root canal therapy) crown and bridge, orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics and removable prosthetics (denture and removable partial dentures). He is a member in good standing with the American Dental Association, the Acadiana District Dental Association and other more specialized organizations dedicated to the advancement of his skills and techniques. He and his wife of 31 years, Claudia, enjoy many outdoor activities and physical fitness pastimes to include competing in triathlons. Their son, Robert, is currently serving in the US Air Force.

Dr. Price’s patients have many nice things to say about their dental care, especially in regard to Dr. Price’s gentle way with children. If you are looking for a dentist, you don’t have to look far. Dr. Price and her team of friendly, caring professionals are committed to helping their patients learn all of the many options to improve their health and smile in an easy, comfortable, and affordable way.

Peter and Paul school), Christina Edley (who began her employment at the office early this year, has worked as Chairside Dental Assistant for 9 years and was recently promoted to office manager), and McKenzie Smith (who has worked in dentistry for 8 years and is x-ray certified). In back of them, stands Ashley Price, DDS and Timothy Thomas, DDS and Jana Dore (who has worked at the office for 25 years and who is a resident parishioner at Sts. Peter and Paul in Scott). Lafayette Council on Aging(LAFCOA)

Director RetiresMany of us know LAFCOA Director Clara Burke for her tireless work to bring the Acadiana Heritage Apartments, a model tenant senior housing facility through HUD, to the City of Scott. The apartments and those who live in them have been a credit to the community. Burke began her work with the LAFCOA when it was little more than a small office and the Meals on

Wheels program. Through her leadership, the organization has grown exponentially over the past 30 years. A celebration of her retirement took place in La Belle Maison, a senior facility in Broussard where Scott’s retired Mayor Hazel D. Myers and Carencro’s Mayor Glenn L. Brasseaux, both, shared congratulatory remarks at the ceremony.

Walter Thomas “Tommy” Cart died July 5, 2011, at Heart Hospital of

Lafayette after suffering a major heart attack the preceding Sunday at his home. “Mr. Tommy” was co-founder, owner, business manager, publisher and sports editor of The Rayne Independent, established in November, 1967, by him and his

parents, the late Robert and Lillian “Jo” Cart, and his cousin, Patrick

Hoffpauir. In 2009, he established The Scott Connection.

Cart was a long-time active member and a past president of the Rayne Lions Club. He was a member of the Acadia Parish Library Board of Control and a past board member of the Louisiana Press Association. An avid golfer, he was also a member of Cajun Pines Golf Club in Branch. He was a past member of the Lafayette Area High School Football Association and served as a referee for many years.

The Great Scott Herald staff expresses its sincerest condolences to the family of Dr. Lastie J. Broussard, who was spotlighted in the story about Scott Family Physicians in last quarter’s issue. Dr. Broussard had served Scott as a family doctor for over 30 years, retiring in 1984. The Herald also expresses their condolences to the staff and family of Tommy Cart, owner of the Rayne Independent and to the families of Melvin Sonnier and Marie Mae Guilbeaux.

Carencro Mayor Brasseaux presents Clara Burke with commendation for her 30 years of service to the community.

Retired Mayor Hazel Myers shared tidbits of Clara’s positive impact on the City of Scott.

The Scott Historical and Genealogical Society has taken off on its historical trip. The Society was awarded status by the State of Louisiana on May 4, 2011, and currently working on completing the paperwork for Non-profit Status. Membership meetings are being held every month with 28 members so far.

The Society has taken on the project of developing a book about the history of Scott. This book will contain over 150 photos of the buildings, people and events of Scott. We are in search of photographs to use in the book. These photographs must be originals, no copies or digital photos. The photographs will be scanned and all originals will be returned to the owner. If anyone has any original photographs to use in the book or would like to help with the book, please contact Pam Carr at [email protected].

The Café Francais group meets Wednesdays, for lunch, from 12:30 - 2:00 at The Coffee Depot to talk French. Please stop by and join them in keeping our heritage language alive.

We have several other projects that are on-going and welcome any suggestions for new projects. The Society meets the 3rd Sunday of each month at 1 p.m. at The Coffee Depot; however, in October, the meeting will take place on the 2nd Sunday (October 9), instead.

Time has come again for the City of Scott to begin its search for the new Miss Scott and Jr. Miss Scott to reign over the City. Every year, two young ladies are crowned in October, but the process begins much earlier with an application and subsequent interviews.

Whoever gets chosen, takes part in many events and activities in and around the community. A few years ago, when the Scott Business Association elevated the regalia associated with its Mardi Gras celebration, Miss Scott and Jr. Miss Scott automatically became the royal maids for the royal court, and their fathers serve as royal dukes.

Young ladies between the ages of 13 and 18 who are interested, should read the application guidelines and submit the completed form no later than September 8 to either, USA Fitness on Lion’s Club Road, Mary Hebert at 749 Rue de Belier or to the SBA at P.O. Box 533 in Scott, 70583. For information, call 984-7502 or 233-4872.

Halloween in Scott FoundersCommit to 7th Year

Marlene and Blake Duhon have given their all for the City of Scott for as long as they have been merchants in the area. Seven years ago, they spearheaded the first Halloween in Scott as an old-fashioned holiday festival which took place in Scott Oaks Plaza. Every year it was an overwhelming success with hoards of children having a good time and vendors and emergency personnel joining in the fun. Look for this again during the height of fall. Dale Alexander, owner of Pizza Palace has expressed interest in helping the celebration, too, along with the business owners in the Plaza.

The Duhons have served the community well! Marlene devoted three years to the SBA board and was the 2006 SBA Mardi Gras Queen. She and Blake founded the Red Hot Krewe of Scott which already has their schedule set for February 12, 1212 as the date for their Mardi Gras Ball. They have a few openings for memberships and invite those interested to call 262-0240 or come by to pick up an application.

They recently moved from Scott Oaks Plaza to their new, free-standing business. They ask that the community remember them in their prayers as Blake awaits a second opinion regarding a diagnosis of emphysema. Blake doesn’t smoke cigarettes and he is a young man.

The Scott Oak Cleaners have been a sponsor of The Great Scott Herald since its first year. As a beneficiary, like so many, of their generosity to the community, we encourage our readers to frequent their business at 404 Westgate Road. YOU CAN’T MISS IT nor its companion business, Xtreme Tan. The Herald wishes them well and offers them a big thank you.

Grand Réveil Acadien and Festival Acadie Combine!

Look for celebratory festivities as the Acadian community and leaders have worked to offer ten days of coordinated programs, October 7 -16, the likes of which compare to a “mini-Congrés.” Day-long activities programs from New Orleans to Houma, Lake Charles to Maurice and winding up in Lafayette in the Cajundome, Thursday, with the grand finale, procession and activities at Girard Park, August 15 and 16. Don’t miss this!

Obie HulinSBA President

It looks like my Goodbye has turned into Hello again! I would like to thank the Board for their faith and confidence in me as they have re-elected me President of the Scott Business Association for a second term. I am very excited and look forward to working with all of the members of the new board.

The City of Scott and Mayor Morrison have put together a committee of individuals to help provide input for the future growth of Scott. Bonnie Roger and myself were selected to represent the SBA during this Smart Growth for Scott round-table discussion. There were many great ideas presented. SBA will keep the business community informed as any new developments come up, but things are looking very exciting for Scott.

Again, I want to thank the SBA for believing in me for another year, because I believe in Scott.

IT’S THE LAWDon’t Mess With the IRS “Men In Black”

By: Cary B. Bryson, Attorney - Bryson Law Firm, LLC

From police chieF chad leger:

Chief Chad Leger and the officers of the Scott Police Department have been very busy:

We’re finally settled in our new facility and it is nice! Chief Chad Leger, his officers and administrative employees moved into the new Scott Emergency Services Facility the week of June 13 and were open for business the following Monday. It took a little while to work out the “kinks” and get organized, but Chief Leger reports they only have a few things to fine-tune. The grand opening was July 21st. Everyone who attended was impressed by the architecture, aesthetics and latest technology of the new facility. It is certainly something the citizens of Scott can be proud of.

Congratulations for SRO Larry Williams, who attended the National Association of School Resource Seminar in Orlando, Florida. School Resource Officers from around the country attended the seminar for training and sharing information to benefit officers working in our schools. Officer Williams is the school resource officer at Scott Middle School.

It won’t be long until school is back in session. Chief Leger reminds motorists to be mindful of the school buses and school zones around the city. Officers with the Scott Police Department will be monitoring these areas diligently.

Chief Leger hopes everyone had a great summer. The year is passing quickly. It won’t be long until we’ll be giving out Halloween candy and preparing turkey for Thanksgiving Dinner. Please drive carefully and enjoy the upcoming fall.

Did you know that the IRS has its own “Secret Division?” Ok, well maybe it’s not as covert as all of that, but most people don’t know this division exists. And for good reason . . . most people don’t consider not filing their tax returns to be a real crime.

Most people who don’t file their returns do so because of a crisis – a financial crisis, a bad divorce, family illness, etc. But to the IRS if you don’t file your tax return and you’re avoiding dealing with the issue by running away from the problem, you’re considered a “criminal.”

That’s where the “Men in Black” come into play . . . the IRS Criminal Investigation Division (CI). There are over 2,800 CI Agents worldwide who are trained to investigate criminal violations of the Internal Revenue Code.

CI’s Conviction Rate Is One of the Highest In Federal Law Enforcement. In the fiscal year 2006, of the 2,720 people that CI recommended for jail time, 82% were sent to prison. As you can see, if the “Men in Black” show up at your door, they mean business.

But you should know -- CI exists mainly as a “deterrent.” One

of CI’s functions is act as a fear tactic. And it generally works. According to the IRS website, “When individuals and corporations make deliberate decisions to not comply with the law, they face the possibility of a civil audit or criminal investigation which could result in prosecution and possible jail time. Publicity of these convictions provides a deterrent effect that enhances voluntary compliance.” In other words, if you don’t file your taxes and you are convicted of tax evasion, publicizing your conviction is part of the “publicity scheme” of the IRS. Think only of Red Foxx or Wesley Snipes. The IRS wants the world to know that they are serious about catching what it considers “tax cheaters.”

Here’s the good news . . . if you’ve filed your tax returns CI generally won’t bother you. Not being able to pay your taxes is not considered a criminal offense. If you’ve filed and haven’t paid all that you owe, although you still need to get your affairs right with the IRS – you needn’t fear a visit from the “Men in Black” (unless you have committed fraud or evasion). So, don’t let fear of the IRS get in your way. Take action today and put a plan in place to take care of your problem.
