Mobilizing a green communityIt takes a community to educate a child and it may verywell take a community to mobilize a green effort – andGateway wants to be one of those at the head of the classto do so.

Gateway is committed to be a leader in our communities inthe area of “green” and sustainable practices throughprograms, campus improvements, and an overridingmanagement philosophy.

Gateway’s green programs and districtwide focus onsustainable practices will directly and positively impactcommunities, students and the employers of our district. We’ve developed new programs in geoexchange, waterresources engineering, and wind-torque technology thatwill provide training and graduates for in-demand careersin sustainable resources.

When appropriate, we are incorporating sustainablepractices in program curriculum as it reflects ouremployers’ needs. We’ve also looked districtwide to seewhere we could pragmatically become more “green” in ouroperations while holding the line on taxpayer dollars.

We’re moving forward with our green practices because webelieve it’s what our communities and business partnerswant and need – and we identify green careers of thefuture.

‘Green’ workers providelandscape work on Racine CampusFourteen federal stimulus “green” youth workers – wholandscaped or painted with low-VOC (volatile organiccompound) paint – worked on a number of projects on theRacine Campus, including recent work to a rain garden onthe grounds. They were part of the 215-youth effortthroughout Racine County.

The Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network installed a raingarden on the Gateway campus to the east of the RacineBuilding in 2008 and the youth workers – 14 to 24 yearsold – transplanted several more plants there to boost itscapacity in early July.

A rain garden is a bowl-shaped planting bed using nativeWisconsin plants to store, rapidly clean and move waterback into aquifers especially from impervious surfaces likerooftops and parking lots.
