Transcript of August 2009 HTA Newsletter
Congratulations, you have begun the school year. Now that you have started with the OLS/LMS curricu-
lums, there is much to do, learn and use. To help you through this process remember your seven habits:
1. Homeroom Planning (Keep Attendance, Plan your day)
2. Know your tools (OLS/LMS)
3. Know your students learning style
4. Know your limits
5. Use your partnerships (Teachers, staff, HTA ohana)
6. Use the Learning Center (Register for your classes)
7. Be Creative!
In addition to all these sources, communications will have a LIVE Elluminate schedule for OLS/LMS specific
questions. This schedule will come out on August 15 with all the other Elluminate schedules.
To access powerspeaK12, families must first login to the OLS with a student account user name and password. To create a student account, parents must:
1. Login to the OLS with the learning coach user name and password. 2. Select My Account in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
3. On the My Account page, parents are able to create a student account by selecting the blue Edit button in the Student Accounts box. 4. Once the student user name and password has been created, parents will want to navigate back to the OLS Home page and select New Log-In for a new login screen to appear. Once the new screen appears, the family will be able to enter the student user name and password that will take them to the student view of the OLS were they will be able to access the world language course. Once logged into the OLS via the student account, students/families will then want to select power-speaK12 on the side of the screen to access their world language if enrolled in a world language
Congratulations!!!!

Mahalo to all who helped the PTSA have a wonderful start to the new school year. We had 47 people become members of the PTSA during orientation week. You can still become a member. There are applications at the LC. Please fill one out and ask McKenna to put it in the PTSA mailbox. Membership fee is $15 for adults/ $10 for students. Over 200 people attended the Back to School Beach Bash at Bellows. The Bash was a success thanks to Carmen Perkins, Jeff Piontek, Libra Forde and of course all of our guests. Due to some wonderful dishes at our Beach Bash, an HTA Cookbook was suggested. We will have more information about that in the next Blast. Please start gathering your favorite recipes!!
Our curriculum provider is making it possible for the 9th Grade Hawaiian History Course to
appear on your child’s 9th grade course list. The online course will be supported by Mrs.
Erin Smith at the Learning Center. She will be providing you with more details regarding
this class over the next few weeks. Materials for the course will be sent from our curricu-
lum provider.
11th Graders who need Hawaiian History: The course will be added this week to a few 11th grade students who
will need the course in order to graduate.
If you have any questions about the addition of this course to your student’s course list, please contact
Regina Leonardi via e-mail [email protected]
We are looking forward to

The goal of phonics
instruction is to teach
students the most
common sound-spelling
relationships so that
they can decode, or
sound out, words. This
decoding ability is a
crucial element in
reading success.
Instruction will focus
on: phonemic
awareness, decoding,
spelling, and fluency
