A Joyful Community of Faith

Come enjoy an evening of celebration and fellowship. No need to bring a thing except your family.

From the Rector’s Desk

Dear Friends in Christ:

This year we celebrate 35 years as a church. This community started with a handful of people meeting every Sunday in the Kennedy Room of the Dublin Community Church. It soon grew to more than 100 meeting in the middle school cafeteria. We purchased land and started a building. And then, the first rector, Don Peterson had a stroke. He had been a larger-than-life personality who helped draw people to this early start-up church. It could have been the end.

Instead, the community rallied and carried on. The first building was completed and a new rec-tor was called, the Rev. Anne Robbins. Almost immediately plans were underway to build a new sanctuary, which finally was completed in the 19th year of the church’s existence, the year 2000. Now, 16 years into the “new” sanctuary the Church continues to thrive.

I think what makes St. Patrick’s such a special place is the sense of community which it adopted so early on in its existence. As I have heard people share with our new assistant Cameron O’Riley the reasons they are here, so often people mention the community.

We strive to be a “joyful community of faith.” As long as we can hang on to that we will cer-tainly thrive for another 35 years, and more.

Faithfully:

The Rev. Dr. Stephen Smith

Parish Life Coordinator Update As you spend time this October enjoying the leaves, carving pumpkins, eating small candy bars and smelling the autumn freshness, please think about enjoying the October rituals at St. Patrick’s too.

We will begin the month with the Blessing of the Animals. What a fun service! Never know what will happen when parishioners bring their pets to church. The service will be on Sunday Oct. 2 at 5:30pm. The Garage sale is Oct. 15 and the week before is such a great time to visit St. Patrick’s. Come and help sort and price the items. It is a great time of fellowship and you never know, you might just find that certain something you have been looking for. Your help is always appreciated to help make this event such a great success. We will also celebrate out 35th Anniversary with a dinner on Oct. 21 at 6:30pm. This will be a wonderful celebration and a chance for fellowship. Plan to come and enjoy delicious food and conversation. Eve-rything will be provided; all you need to do is bring your family.

See you around the church! Enjoy! ~Julie Righter

Weather permitting, we will once again gather on the back patio of the Church for the 5:30 service on Sunday, October 2, and we will bless animals. So bring your dogs, cats, snakes, birds, whatever. All God’s creatures, great and small, can be a revelation of God’s love.

If you have lost a beloved animal companion since the last St. Francis Sunday, and would like that companion’s name included in the prayers, please call the church office or email [email protected]. by 9/28/16

This Month in Episcopal History St. Simon ♦ One of the First

October 28, 0065

One of the first Apostles of Jesus was Simon Cananeus. He was known as “Simon the Zealot.” This appellation was at-tributed to Simon, not because of his passion or intense com-mitment to the teachings of Jesus, but for his membership, possibly along with other Apostles, in a religious sect that sought to more rigidly follow the traditions and practices of the Hebrew people. Jesus used people such as Simon as bridges between the traditional Jews of Canaan and the new faith he was bringing to the world.

Simon was not merely a follower. He went forth and preached the good news of Jesus in Egypt, Persia, Armenia, and Lebanon. In 65 AD, along with one of the other Disci-ples, he was crucified in Lebanon for his preaching the Gos-pel of Jesus.

In the Christian religion he has been canonized as a Saint. The life and contributions of Simon are commemorated in the Episcopal faith by a feast we have for him every October 28th to remind us that we should all be Zealots for Christ. ~Jim Westman

Divine & Dine

Our next gathering for Divine & Dine is at Sesame Sea Bis-tro in the little strip mail across the street from the church on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:00 PM. We will read and dis-cuss Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7. We always have a wonderful time and welcome everyone to join us. It's a great opportunity to meet new people or meet up with old friends.

Questions? Contact Becky Swift at [email protected] or 317-513-7582

Lay Eucharistic Visitors Have you ever wondered about what those people do, who carry the boxes of communion out of church to the homebound? Have you ever wondered if you might feel a call to this kind of sacred ministry that connects our homebound to the gathered community? If you answered yes to either question than talk to the clergy about the possibility of becoming a lay Eucharis-tic visitor. Unfortunately, the number of homebound parishioners is increasing as our community ages. We have tried to bring communion to all of them every Sunday, and this is getting harder to do. If we want to continue the min-istry at this level of care, we will need more visitors.

St. Pat’s Men’s Group Last winter an inaugural men’s retreat was held. Out of that positive event a Men’s Tuesday Morning Group developed. We meet every Tuesday morning at 6:45 AM in the fellow-ship hall for one hour. We have a light breakfast snack, fel-lowship time, and a scripture study and discussion which fo-cuses on how the scripture reading relates to our own daily lives and spiritual walks. Please feel free and welcome to join us. Do not feel that since you have not been with us since we initiated the group that you should not attend. We have wel-comed new participants over the last six months at many different times, and I believe they feel very comfortable. Also, if you cannot attend every week that is fine. None of us has been there every week and that also is not a problem at all. Our format is weekly and not a continuing week to week study. Each week is a meeting unto itself. All are welcome as often as you can attend. If any of you feel the day, time, or location does not work for you, but would like to have the opportunity to be involved in a group like this, contact me, Doug Pittsenbarger, and we can pursue if there is an interest in other groups forming.

P.S. This group has become a blessing for me and I am confi-dent the other participants. Please consider joining us.

Ultreya at St Pat's Have you heard about Cursillo, Cum Christo, Walk to Em-maus or other 4th day movements? Do you wonder about the roots of Kairos? Kairos grew out of the other 4th Day movements, and all seek to build Christian Communities in their environments. Those who have been on a weekend, get together once a month for a meeting called Ultreya to reconnect with each other. Cum Christo is now moving these meetings around the metro area instead of going downtown. We will have an Ultreya at St Pat's on Wednes-day, November 2nd at 7 p.m. If you are curious about Cum Christo, please come join us. There is no commitment or recruiting pep talk, just singing, sharing, a lay talk and prayers, followed by fellowship.

If you would like to help put it on (mainly as a greeter) let me know. If you want more information you can talk to any graduate or go to www.cumchristo.org or http://episcopalcursilloministry.org/ecm_conferences.htm.

Unfortunately, Episcopal Cursillo is not available in South-ern Ohio. ~Dick Gehman

Living Compass program that we are also offering to at least one of the Sacred Circle groups.

What does it mean to have a “culture of wellness”? It’s not just a crunchy granola attempt to have everyone lose weight and exercise (although that’s not a bad idea for most of us). What we want to engender is a way for our congregation to continue to grow as a community of faith who practice wellness in every facet of our lives. We know that God’s wish for us is health and wholeness. We also know that health is not just the ab-sence of illness or disability. Research has supported this concept for many years.

To support our development of a culture of wellness, we will be offering many different kinds of programs like the Living Compass program, Worship in Pink, programs to help caregivers, mental health first aid for families, walks to Jerusalem or Bethlehem, and coordi-nate with other programs that already exist at St. Pat-rick’s.

Rose and I hope that our Wellness/Parish Nurse minis-try will be one that will involve many people and con-tinue to be active and vital. Please feel free to ask us questions, make suggestions, and most of all,

Last month, we (Rose and I) formed the Wellness Council for St. Patrick’s. Catherine Loveland, Vicki von Sadovszky, Jamie Friday, Susan Jones, and Amy O’Neill are representatives of the various parish minis-tries that promote wellness. The purpose of the Coun-cil is to:

To lead the way in creating a culture of wellness at St. Patrick’s that will have a significant impact on our faith and wellness ministries over the years.

To assure that there will be meaningful wellness offerings for people of all ages and stages of life at St. Patrick’s.

To be on the lookout for other members of the congregation who might want to join the team, peo-ple who can add to our discussions, and who have a lived passion for faith and wellness.

To be people who will model and live out the prin-ciples of wellness in their lives and ministries.

Rose and I have been certified as Congregational Well-ness Advocates by the Living Compass Organization that is based in the Diocese of Chicago. Catherine Loveland is going for the training this month. The members of the Wellness Council are experiencing the

Youth Group News!

The new year is off to a very exciting start, and we can't wait to keep it going this October with all kinds of new and ex-citing programming! We'll start October with a station meeting where youth group members will be able to choose which activity most interests them. Then, we'll all come to-gether the next week for a food drive scavenger hunt in the neighborhood (and some celebratory ice cream afterwards). We'll continue with a meeting divided into our Middle School and High School age groups for separate activities. The fourth Sunday will be our evening meeting for the month. Finally, we'll celebrate the fall season with a youth-centered family outing to The Maize for corn maze and pumpkin patch adventures and worship around a bonfire! It promises to be an exciting and eventful month and we can't wait to see you there!

Peace, ~Laura Crone Youth & Children's Ministries Coordinator

Sunday School News It's been so exciting to see so many new and returning faces back in our Sunday School classrooms, and we can't wait to keep sharing God's amazing stories this month! We'll start Oc-tober with a celebration of the feast of Saint Francis and talk about how we can follow his example of glorifying God through our relationships with animals. Then the next week, we'll read an incredible story of a man who was healed of a terri-ble disease through faith. We'll continue with a spooky story about Jacob wrestling an angel. Then we'll read about an impor-tant prayer of humility and see what we can learn from the man who first prayed it. Finally, we'll finish October with the story of the least likely man to host Jesus in his house--Zacchaeus!

Interested in helping out with Sunday School? We are always in need of teachers and assistants! Sign up for one week or several. Check out our SignUpGenius at http://tinyurl.com/zhm4nup or contact Heather Dudash at [email protected]
