The Messenger firsT bapTisT hunTsville this sunday knowing, loving, serving Christ...together FIRST THOUGHTS David Hull, Pastor The football season is just around the corner. I know that many of you are getting excited about what is to come. Before the season can begin, training camp occurs. During this important pre-season time, teams drill on fundamentals of the sport, athletes work on conditioning, offensive and defensive schemes are put in place, and new players are assimilated into the unit. The success of a season often depends on the commitment of the team during training camp. We have a new season about to begin at First Baptist Church. Our new church year for Sunday School will start on August 19 with Promotion Sunday. The same week that students return to our public schools we will begin a new year of Sunday School learning and growing. This season promises to be a most exciting one. In a few months we will move into our new building and the ripple effect of that move will allow us to have more room for Sunday School classes. Some classes will finally get the space that meets their needs. Other classes will move to a better location within in the church building. And, most importantly, we will finally have extra space that will allow us to start new classes so that we can grow the Sunday School. I am filled with anticipation about the good things that can begin happening in our Bible Study hour on Sunday mornings during these next twelve months. Right now we are in training camp. The new season has not yet begun. This Sunday, August 5, we are planning to have a Sunday School Leadership Training Day. Immediately following Sanctuary Worship, a lunch will be served for Sunday School workers in all of our age divisions. Following lunch, the workers will divide up by age groups for training and planning. We will have a special guest leader in our Experienced Adult area. Bo Prosser is one of the most gifted people for training Sunday School leaders that I know. I am grateful that he is with us for the day. Each one of our staff ministers will give leadership to the workers in their age group. What we will be doing on Sunday afternoon is very important. It is training camp for an exciting season that lies before us. If you are one of our Sunday School workers I am most grateful for your ministry in our church. I hope that you will join us for training camp. Because of the importance of the afternoon session and the numbers of people involved in training, we will not have any evening activities at the church this Sunday. easy way to:

• Carefully observe Scripture to see what it says

• Learn how to develop its context• Accurately interpret the Word to

understand its meaning• Apply truth to your life that you may

glorify God

These tools are easy to learn and can be used for any Bible Study, Sunday School

lesson or your daily Bible study time. Books are $15 each. Books will need to be ordered by August 30. If you are interested

in this 3 week study, contact Kennie Worlund at 256-539-4275 or

Wednesday, August 15 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. A very special event is being planned for the families of First Baptist! As we approach the new church year and gear up to begin

our Music and Missions activities we want to show the children of our church how special they are to us all. A Music and Missions Kickoff Celebration, “Under the Big Top”, will

take place in the church parking lot. This will be a carnival event with games, activities, food, and other special events. We hope all the families of the church with children will

participate and register their children for Music and Missions!

Our church “Joined In” on May 6th to help reduce our giving deficit. The giving for that Sunday was almost $272,000 and we were almost at our giving goal. As summer has progressed we have seen our offerings drop below our planned giving once again. Actual offerings through June are $155,000 below our projected goal. We continue to hold spending to a level commensurate with the giving – meaning many planned ministry activities and improvements to our facility have been delayed or abandoned. We do, however, continue to share what has been given with our community and around the world to build God’s kingdom and glorify His name.

With only two months left in our fiscal year, examine your financial stewardship. As summer winds down, please “Join In” with fellow members and contribute not only your financial resources but share in all the blessings that come with being a part of this wonderful body of Christ.

If you haven’t been able to attend as regularly as you would have liked this summer, try e-giving. Give in adoration and praise for all you have been given. Give in obedience to God. Give with a cheerful heart. “Join In” and give.

English as a Second Language (ESL) and Lakewood Elementary

Both of these wonderful opportunities to serve people face to face in our community will need new volunteers beginning with the upcoming new school year. You will see a list of opportunities below that will be very important to these missions. Please note the new ministry at Lakewood at number 4 below. Please pray and consider one of the offerings below as we continue to serve our community and our Lord.

1. Sunday School classes and departments to provide food/snacks at the ESL break time.

2. Lakewood Tutors to continue helping change students’ lives – Our goal is 60 tutors this year. Some early morning positions are open.

3. FBC smiling faces to serve as a welcoming host/hostess for the first few weeks of ESL classes.

4. A new ministry at Lakewood – providing weekend nourishing meals for students that need something extra over the weekend. We need people to help with serving as a team coordinator, delivering the meals to the school, and purchasing the food items.

5. There are other volunteer opportunities with both ministries – contact Mike Pearce (256-428-9448) for more information or pick up the brochure for all the volunteer positions.

This Sunday, August 5, you will find volunteer forms in your Sunday School boxes and at the welcome centers. ESL begins Thursday, August 23, the food ministry will begin in early September, and we will start tutoring after the volunteer coordinators give us our assignments. We will have an interest meeting for any new tutors on Sunday afternoon, August 12 at 4:00 right before the Blue Grass & Stained Glass concert. Sunday, August 19th is the deadline to turn in your volunteer forms.

Children’s Missions CoordinatorWe are also pleased to announce that Hope Mackey will be our Children’s Missions Coordinator as we begin our Wednesday night Music and Missions programming for the fall. After graduating from seminary, Hope worked for several years with M-Fuge and Centri-Kid Camps and has also designed and written children’s mission curriculum herself. She has most recently been a teacher with our Wednesday night Missions program. Hope has a passion for helping children learn more about their role in participating in the kingdom of God. She is excited about partnering with those already deeply committed to missions education in our church.

Express a word of welcome to both Emily and Hope as they begin these new roles. Both positions are twelve hours per week and begin August 1.

Volunteers NeededThe presentation will feature our

vibrant and versatile Sanctuary Choir and our wonderful FBC Bluegrass Band (did you get to hear them informally around the church this past Sunday? What fun!).

Emily brings many wonderful dimensions to our music ministry with children. She is an experienced music educator, one who loves both children and adults. Emily knows our music ministry and its teams very well already and is deeply loved and appreciated.

Children’s Missions CoordinatorWe are also pleased to announce that Hope Mackey will be our Children’s Missions Coordinator as we begin our Wednesday night Music and Missions programming for the fall. Hope will be a great addition to our missions ministry with children.

First thoughtsDavid hull, Pastor

the football season is just around the corner. i know that many of you are getting excited about what is to come.
