Good News Reflection

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 19, 2018

Proverbs 9:1-6 Ps 34:2-7 Ephesians 5:15-20 John 6:51-58

Being consumed without being destroyed

In this Sunday's Gospel reading, we hear the Great Eucharistic Command. Jesus says: "Those who feed on me will have life because of me." What kind of life? What's the difference between having his life and the one you were born with?

Jesus gives us his body and blood in every Mass so that we can consume him in his entirety -- all of his humanity and all of his divinity. He wants us to be nourished abundantly by his love. He wants us to receive his strength when we endure trials, his healing when we suffer wounds, and most of all, his life, not just when we go to Heaven, but here and now on Earth.

Consuming Jesus should transform us into his likeness. If we truly believe that the Eucharist is the body and blood of Jesus our Savior, then why would we leave Mass unchanged?

By consciously participating in the Penance Rite at the beginning of Mass, actively listening to the readings of the Word of God, sincerely praying with the priest, and trusting in the power of God when we say, "Lord, I am not worthy … but say the word and my soul shall be healed," and then consuming the Eucharist with humility and awe, we become one with his body and blood.

Now we, too, are his body and blood on earth, ready for others to consume us, or to put it more accurately, giving them the opportunity to be nourished by the True Presence of Jesus within us.

When we give love to others, they receive God's love. When they fail to return that love, we are being consumed! We are giving more than we're receiving. Similarly, when we give of our time and talents for the sake of God's kingdom without being paid or rewarded, we are being Eucharist. We are one in body and blood with Jesus.

Being consumed without being destroyed is possible only if we receive from Jesus what others fail to give to us. This is why the Eucharistic celebration of Mass is our true nourishment. It needs to be the source and the summit of our lives.

Questions for Personal Reflection: How similar to Jesus are you? What in God's personality do you need to consume more of so that you can become more like him? Ask for it whenever you go to Mass!

Questions for Community Faith Sharing: Share the story of a time when you gave more than you received. How was this Christ-like? Why does it mean you were Eucharist for others? How does receiving Jesus during Mass fill us up so that we can continue giving without being depleted?

Reflexión de las Buenas Nuevas

20mo. Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Agosto 19, 2018

Proverbios 9, 1-6 Salmo 33, 2-7 Efesios 5, 15-20 Juan 6, 51-58

Notes from the Liturgist

THE EFFECTS OF HOLY COMMUNION

Holy Communion Augments our Union with Christ… The principal fruit receiving the Eucharist in Holy Communion is an intimate union with Christ Jesus.

Holy Communion Separates us from Sin… The Body of Christ we receive in Holy Communion is given up for us and the blood we drink shed for the

many for the forgiveness of sins.

The Unity of the Mystical Body: The Eucharist makes the Church Those who receive the Eucharist are united more closely to Christ. Through it Christ unites them to all the

faithful in one body – the Church.

The Eucharist Commits us to the Poor… To receive in truth the Body and Blood of Christ given up for us, we must recognize Christ in the poorest,

his brethren.

The Eucharist and the Unity of Christians… Before the greatness of this mystery St. Augustin exclaims O sacrament of devotion! O sign of unity! O

bond of charity.

The Eucharist Helps us to become more Mature in Faith… It helps us to become like Christ to others.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church was referenced, sections 1391-1398.

St. Mary’s Women’s Prayer Group

A prayer group for the women of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Mary’s is set to begin this fall on Wednesday evenings beginning September 5th. The overall purpose of this group is to provide Catholic fellowship outside of Mass; to create an atmosphere of prayer and contemplation while learning more about our faith, our Church, and our fellow sisters in faith.

One of the tools we will use in this journey of faith is the Symbolon Program: an in-depth study of the Catholic faith, and how we can strengthen that faith in our lives. Later studies may include Pope Francis’ The Joy of the Gospel, Humanae Vitae, other encyclical letters, and the lives of the saints.

I invite you to become a part of this group, as we learn together what it means to be a Catholic woman in today’s world. Wednesday evenings, 6:30 – 8:00 PM, RCIA room (playground/back door, upstairs - elevator access).

Children at Mass—It’s a Good Thing!

We love having children at Mass. They are cute, and they are our future of our Church. We should all welcome them and their parents. However, parents need to respect other parishioners’ desire to focus on the Mass itself. Please:

Arrive early, do bathroom runs before Mass and settle into the pew ahead of time.

Tell your kids it’s quiet time when Mass is starting

We aren’t supposed to bring food and drink into the Church proper. However, bringing snacks is a common way to keep the peace with little ones. Please bring something easy to clean up (not sticky, greasy or wet—with the exception of baby bottles), and make sure it isn’t in a loud, crackling container. A ziplock of Cheerios is tried and true.

Remember there is the Cry Room you can use for those who are a little extra fidgety.

Join the United States Conference of catholic Bishops in a

Novena for the Protection of Human Life every Friday from

August 3 to September 28. In addition to the current invita-

tion to fast on Fridays, participants are encouraged to pray

one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for the intention of

the novena. Participants will also be provided with weekly

opportunities to learn more about Roe v. Wade, and share

that information with their representatives.

The upcoming Supreme Court vacancy provides us with yet

another occasion requiring focused prayer. The U.S. Con-

ference of Catholic Bishops does not support or oppose the

confirmation of any presidential nominee. However, given

this historic moment, the U.S. bishops are urging all people

of good will to pray that a change in the U.S. Supreme

Court may move our nation closer to the day when every

human being is protected in law and welcomed in life.

Find out more about participation in this novena under

Issues and Actions at www.usccb.org

Care for Creation

If you hand wash your car, park it on your lawn and use buckets and sponges. Use the hose to rinse and either use a hose nozzle to stop the water or turn the hose off be-tween rinses. Be careful the soap and any other cleaning products don’t go down a storm drain!
