The 2012 Olympic Games in Londonhas captured the world stage as always.I especially enjoy watching the openingceremonies and the Parade of Nations.The theme of the Olympics (as in oureveryday lives) is always the same - theglory of winning and the agony ofdefeat. How can a group of stellarathletes, representing the nations ofearth, march together in peace(opening ceremonies) while there is somuch conflict in our world?

In the above verse, Apostle Paulmight have felt defeated. This was hissecond Roman imprisonment forsharing his faith. A mentor for youngTimothy and up in years, Paul passesthe baton to the next generation withthe message to ‘guard the gospel’ (IITimothy l: 4). It is a call to boldness inthe face of persecution, diligence in theface of despair and faithfulness in theface of fear.

Using the metaphor of the ancientGreek games, he says we must ‘play bythe rules’ if we expect to receive theprize. The prizes awarded at the Greekgames were evergreen wreaths.Heavenly rewards are different fromearthly rewards. Earthly rewards aretemporary. Heavenly rewards areeternal. Earthly rewards are for achosen few. Heavenly rewards are forall who are faithful (Matthew 5:12).

Those who are faithful will receive thecrown of life (Revelation 2:l0); the crownof righteousness (2 Timothy 4:7-8); andthe crown of glory (I Peter 5:4). Untilthen, Jesus invites all believers to carrythe torch for peace (Matthew 5:9).

Harm passed awaySaturday, August 4,2012 at home. Mr.LeRoy was bornJune 20, 1919 inKalamazoo County to Jacoband Nellie (Deward) LeRoyand was a lifelong resident of

the area. During WWII Harm served his countryin the U.S. Army. For over 28 years he wasemployed as a welder with General Motors,retiring in 1981. He loved the outdoors, watchingbirds and wildlife, and fishing. On September 3,1953 in Allegan he married Iveda (LaFountain)Sutherland, who died in 2006. Also preceding himin death were two sons, LeRoy Sutherland andDavid Sutherland; siblings, Betty Crone, IsaacLeRoy, Jake LeRoy and Al LeRoy; infant brothers,Jacob and Peter. Surviving are his children,Louann (Doug) Hatten, Laura (Herbert) Trebilcok,Thomas Sutherland, Carol Harris and Patricia(Gale) Emmons; 42 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren;many nieces and nephews. Pauline passed away Monday, August 6, 2012 inPlainwell. Mrs. Deike was born August 10, 1914 inWatson Township to Randall and B. Sophia(Nyberg) Brooks and was a lifelong resident of thearea. She was a graduate of Martin High Schooland for several years was employed as abookkeeper with Otsego Sanitary Milk Co.Pauline was an active member of the OtsegoUnited Methodist Church. She had also belongedto the Widows Club, Otsego Women’s Club andthe Crystal Club. For many years she served onthe Otsego Election Board and had volunteeredfor Meals on Wheels. On June 28, 1941 in Alleganshe married William F. Deike, who died in 1976.She was also preceded in death by her sister,Geraldine Stalter. Surviving are her daughter,Carolyn (Christopher) Russell of Millersville, MD;a granddaughter, Valerie (Kenneth) Herrst ofJasper, AL; three great-grandchildren, MatthewRussell, Victoria Russell and Ashley Madison; asister-in-law, Ruth Fast of Fennville; 4 nieces; 3nephews; 9 great nieces and nephews; manygreat great nieces and nephews. Funeral serviceswill be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 10th,2012 at the Otsego United Methodist Church,Rev. Dan Minor officiating. Burial will follow atMountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Robert “Bob” L. BRUCEAGE 68

Robert (Bob) L. Bruce, age 68,passed away peacefully at theWings Home in Allegan, MI onAugust 5, 2012 in thepresence of family and closefriends. Bob was born inKalamazoo, MI on February14, 1944 to Ephrain L. Bruce

and Leona M. (Merkle) Bruce. He was a long-time resident of Plainwell, MI and had asuccessful career in the plastics industry andretail in the Kalamazoo area.

Bob loved the outdoors and the Boy Scouts ofAmerica. He was involved with the Scouts for 35years and a Scout Master for eight years, wherehe influenced the lives of many young men andled six to become Eagle Scouts. He lovedastronomy and knew the “heavens” well; he was aperpetual amateur weatherman, able to predictlocal weather patterns far more accurately thanmany professional meteorologists. In addition,he was a scholar of steam driven trains andMichigan lighthouse history. Bob had a passionfor “social networking”, be it person to person orvia the internet. He had friends globally withwhom he was in regular communication.

He is preceded in death by his father Ephrain,two brothers (Richard and Frank), his mother-in-law Dorothy H. (Smith) Nowak, and father-in-lawFrances A. Nowak.

His surviving family includes his daughterKathleen (Bob) Bailey and her children David andElizabeth, his son Michael (Tammy) Bruce andtheir children Nathan, Mackenzie, Ally, andEmma, his mother Leona M. Bruce, his brotherTom (June) Bruce and their daughter Malaya, aswell as his "resident" adopted son Scott (Kristina)Turner. In addition, Bob had many otherchildren, even though not related, whom he loveddearly as his own, and had a long and lovinghistory with the Bruce family.
