It’s not Oz, but it’s an equally magical, “life-changing” experience

for two Etobicoke School of the Arts’ musical theatre students.

The pair is vying for the role of Dorothy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Canadian production of The Wizard of Oz opening at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in downtown Toronto this December.

Malindi Ayienga, 16, and Jessie Munro, 18, are among 20 finalists follow-ing a Canada-wide audi-tion tour set to potentially compete next month in CBC Television’s live com-petition series, Over the Rainbow.

The two-hour series pre-miere features an audition tour documentary, followed by the first performance, on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. Over the Rainbow then airs every Sunday at 8 p.m. as the girls battle it out sing-ing a mix of Broadway and pop songs. Canadians vote for their favourite Dorothy online after each show.

The bottom two Dorothys determined by the online vote then face-off with one girl saved from elimination by the judges in half-hour results’ episodes airing every Monday at 8 p.m.

Ultimately, the coveted role-winning Dorothy will be chosen by Canadians.

“It was so exciting. I couldn’t really believe it. I was in shock,” Munro said of being chosen a top 20 Dorothy finalist after singing Over the Rainbow. “Malindi and I started crying, hugging. I don’t think I’ve fully processed it yet.”

First, Ayienga and Munro must impress Over the

Rainbow staff next week with their musical theatre work at Dorothy’s Farm. CBC released few details to finalists or the media about the ‘farm’ where the top 20 finalists will compete to capture one of 10 spots on Over the Rainbow.

Munro’s grandmother played piano and taught her the iconic song, Over the Rainbow, when she was a little girl.

“It’s a dream come true,”

Munro said of her shot to play Dorothy through the TV show.

“It’s not something you expect to happen. It’s overwhelming to be a part of it. I feel so excited and so, so blessed. To have the opportunity to perform with these girls on that kind of stage with the amazing show staff, it’s incredible. I’m excited about what the experience will bring, excited to grow, to be the

best performer I can be. Everyone is going to be doing their best.”

Close friends, Munro and Ayienga performed together in a women’s choir, as well as Etobicoke School of the Arts’ (ESA) SPLASH show choir, which won gold this year at Showchoir Canada.

Munro played Jets’ Graziella this year in ESA’s West Side Story, while Ayienga played the Sharks’

Rosalia. Munro also played Mimi in an ESA production of Rent.

Ayienga has been habitually watching the British version of Over the Rainbow, which chose Dorothy for Lloyd Webber’s London theatrical produc-tion of the 1939 classic film, in an effort to prepare for her own Dorothy bid.

“I’m so, so excited for this experience. I’m going to be working with the best

of the best, and with girls who love doing what I love doing. It will be amazing.”

Both girls mention Stephanie Gorin, the renowned casting director, by name.

“To have the opportunity to be known by somebody so powerful in the industry, it’s awesome,” Ayienga said.

Munro’s father, who has worked with Gorin on films, told his daughter Gorin is “the” casting director for movies, TV and theatre.

“At my audition, (Gorin) said, ‘I’ve seen you on YouTube.’ What? I was completely in awe that Stephanie Gorin has seen me on YouTube. To work with her is incredible.”

The girls credit ESA with preparing them for audi-tions and for professional singing, dancing and acting roles.

Ayienga’s Mom, Nicole, couldn’t contain her excite-ment at her daughter’s first audition outside school.

“When she got the Golden Ticket — I’m really not a screamer — but there was a frantically screaming woman in the room. Oh, it was me. I’m really, really happy for her.”

Ayienga called the opportunity to play Dorothy “absolutely life-changing.”

“It would not only be a great job, it would be the beginning of a career. It would be a huge, huge deal.”

Munro hopes to return the “rush” to the Canadian Over the Rainbow viewers that she gets when watch-ing performers live on stage if she makes it to compete on the TV show.

“This is something we’ll never forget. I’m really excited to grow from this experience. This is once in a lifetime.”

Your VieW

To the editor:Recently, the Federal Court

of Canada said it is legal for a blogger to quote and link to an online news article in a post.

So if you copy a news article headline and summary – with a link to the full version – and post it to your blog or website, you haven’t violated Canada’s online copyright laws.

Social media makes it too easy to just share website links on Facebook, tweet research on Twitter or embed anoth-er’s YouTube video. But this online content costs owners time, resources and money to create and publish.

A blogger or web publisher should still follow a few basic rules when using content from an Internet news site or other online source on their own.

At the very least, the date, name of publication and title (with a link) of an Internet article must be included in the body of a blog post.

A direct quote from an online news story should include a full citation to it at the bottom of a blogger’s article: just like a university student must do to show their sources for a research paper.

A Google Internet search makes it easy to find an image or logo to embed – or link to – within a blog post.

But if an image or logo is trademarked, a blog owner should obtain permis-sion from its owner before including it in their own blog article.

The arrival of rainy days of the type we have not seen for

far too long appears to have heralded a change of season.

Since then there has been a shift in the weather and you can almost smell a hint of fall in the air. The days are getting cooler, the air con-ditioners are being turned off, and covers are definitely returning for comfortable nighttime sleeping.

There are also signs of the upcoming political changes taking place this fall.

Along with the days becoming shorter and the leaves falling from the trees, we will soon be seeing politicians returning to their various levels of govern-ment.

While most people are still in relaxed summer mode, there is a definite grumpiness amongst politicians who have been frustrated with the polarized state of politics.

It will be interesting to see whether that feeling of discontent will translate into reaching some sort of compromise or more talk of elections. At this point nobody wants to talk about elections as the economy is still too fragile to see a big

change in government at any level.

Likewise, it is apparent the people of Ontario are not willing to have conser-vatives in power at both the federal and provincial levels of government.

The real issue everyone is watching is whether the global economic changes taking place will have repercussions in Canada. At this time the economic market is acting more like a pinball machine where the economy is bouncing off one crisis after another in an almost random manner.

When stock market con-ditions change this quickly, all predictive financial indi-cators simply stop working.

All we can do now is to wait and see where the market settles and if all goes well, the landing will be rela-tively soft.

Unfortunately, econo-mists are trying to decide which “R” word to use for the next fiscal quarter:

recovery or recession. By September we may be

facing some very important questions regarding trends in employment, economic growth and property values for the next year.

No matter the rhetoric that will be flung about by different political parties, the only real issue for most people will be either keep-ing the job they have, or finding one.

Let’s see how the province fares as we pass through this unsettled time with two decades of cutbacks in government services behind us.

More cuts may appeal to those ideologically inclined to see such policies as improvements. However, they have not translated into either jobs or prosper-ity in either Toronto or the province.

Maybe it’s time to start considering a policy of properly investing in the economy through a reformed taxation system where everyone pays their fair share without exception.

Some thoughts about the coming fall

Joe Cooper

guest column

Like a broken record, the loop that is the Toronto Police Service budget is coming around again.

Wednesday’s police board meeting has raised the budget spectre once again. Reaction – on both sides – sounds very much like it did last year.

The debate between city hall and the police service around how much money it takes to protect the City of Toronto comes up every year. This time, Police Chief Bill Blair has warned there could be layoffs; and the city’s budget chief, Councillor Mike Del Grande, is musing about an inde-pendent study justifying the about-5,600 officers currently employed.

Wrangling between politi-cians and police does nothing to solve the issues faced by communities affected by vio-lence, gangs, guns and drugs. All it does, if anything at all, is create Band-Aid solutions without speaking with those most affected by the problems.

Given the spate of gun violence in Toronto recently, we suggest police budgets should not be discussed solely by politicians and police.

The conversation must be in the community first. Councillors should seek to engage directly with their constituents on this issue specifically. Only that way will a truer picture emerge of the local impact of the resources currently being applied. Those conversa-tions will generate a pathway for future resource appli-cation.

The Danzig Street shooting has spurred politicians to hold community forums and town halls. Leaders in the Scarborough community shaken by the violence have also taken up the mantle as well. But the reality is these forums, although very beneficial, go nowhere without continued and consistent interaction between the community and the police.

In a perfect world, money would be no object. With civic budget restraint already reflected in communi-ties across the city, how the money spent on the police budget should be scrutinized – just like any other department’s. Frank discussions are needed.

The result may be that we find out certain areas of the city may need less of a police presence than others. The result may be that officers need to be re-deployed to other neighbourhoods. Perhaps more initiatives are needed – like the school resource officer program where the community gets to the know police officers.

Regardless, police interaction with the community should be more direct and compassionate – and effi-cient.

Giving the community a say will provide a better picture over where those dollars should be spent.

Donovan said.“He loved life! He exercised

vigorously, lifted weights, skated, socialized, laughed, danced and did many of the things that cystic fibrosis had previously prevented him from doing.”

Sadly, Marks was diagnosed in 2010 with Hodgkin’s lym-phoma, a type of cancer.

Although he beat the dis-ease, his lungs “took a terrible beating” from the treatment and he was put back on the transplant list on the condi-tion he remain cancer-free for a year, Donovan said.

Unfortunately, Marks died at the age of 31 last Sept. 16 before receiving another transplant.

Donovan hopes sharing her son’s story will encour-age people to become organ donors.

Her plea comes just a after the provincial agency responsible for managing the system called attention to low registration rates in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

The GTA has a lower percentage of registered donors than any region in Ontario, according to the Ontario Trillium Gift of Life Network.

With only 12 per cent of Etobicoke residents register-ing to be organ donors, the community has one of the worst rates in the province.

Just over 66,000 Ontario residents, or 22 per cent, have agreed to donate their organs and tissues after death by reg-istering at www.BeADonor.ca

More than 1,500 people in Ontario are on a waiting list for an organ.

On average, one of them dies every three days, Gift of Life president Ronnie Gavsie said.

One donor can save up to eight lives and improve the lives of as many as 75 others.

As many as one in four Ontario residents mistakenly believe they are registered donors because they have signed a paper donation card,

but those cards are often inef-fective because they can’t be located when needed, Gavsie said.

Also, families are much more likely to agree to donate a loved one’s organs if they know the person has taken the time to register as a donor, she added.

Donovan knows the dif-ference organ donation can make to recipients and their families.

“No words can ever express our gratitude for the unselfish gift that the donor’s family gave to Rob during their own time of grief,” she said.

“This self less family gave Rob five phenomenal, energetic, years filled with socializing, laughing, danc-ing, exercising, living and breathing. Losing Rob was extremely difficult but know-ing that he had five happy, healthy years definitely pro-vided some comfort.”

Are you courageous when it comes to decorating your home? Many of us would like to be as creative as possible but need guidance to venture out from the neutrals – and into something more power-fully beautiful.

Colour is the most impor-tant tool in the toolbox, say experts in this field, and often add that one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to infuse the home with colour is with paint.

People often feel intimated by this type of expression and that’s why so much of our country is beige and off-white. We need to remember that colour is a great balancer

in a space; it’s a juggling act between neutrals, grounding shades, highlight and accent colours.

When choosing a paint pal-ette for any room there are four key components to en-sure powerful effects while keeping a harmonious bal-ance: neutrals, which are the beige or creamiest versions of any colour; grounding shades, like blacks, browns and greys; highlights, like the bright white on moldings and win-dow trim; and the all-impor-tant saturated pops of colour which add life to any room.

You might want your pop of colour to be a powerful accent wall. Then, you can

complement it with neutral upholstery and grounding accents in the accessories to balance it all.

For additional guidance, inspiration – and even lib-eration – here are som great tips:

START SMALL

If you want to incorporate a trendy colour into your home but feel intimated, start small with paint or décor accents that are inexpensive. This way, you can always change your mind if you fall in love with a new colour or want to refresh the look of your room.

START WITH A CHIP

Use the chip rack at your retailer to find colour fami-lies and their complementing shades. A popular way to find an accent colour, for example, is to go a few shades darker in the same family.

-News Canada

Express yourself with COLOUR For most people, buying a

home is a significant mile-stone and the biggest pur-chase of their lifetime.

While Canadians protect their residences with home and title insurance, many are not addressing who will inherit what may be their largest asset.

A survey of more than 2,000 Canadians revealed that a majority of adults (56 per cent) do not have a signed will.

A will is a legal, written document that sets out the person's wishes about how his or her estate should be taken care of and distrib-uted after death.

The absence of a clear, signed will can become a divisive and contentious

issue at a time when fami-lies are already experienc-ing grief, and can result in a range of complications, from belongings not going to the person they were in-tended for, to court battles that cost thousands of dol-lars.

According to the survey results, only 13 per cent of Canadians sign a will when they purchased a home or condo.

During the time you are fi-nalizing your deal is the ideal time to speak with a lawyer. Homebuyers already have a lawyer working on the pur-chase and should be think-ing of having wills and pow-ers of attorney drawn up.

Working with a lawyer to create a will can cost as little as internet access for a year and will reduce the risk of relevant issues not being addressed or of a breach of a technical requirement for a valid will.

Having a will not only en-sures assets and interests are protected now and in the future, it can also bring peace of mind and provide greater assurance for loved ones.

Today’s kids are busier than ever before. Commitments in the classroom coupled with a full slate of extracurricular activi-ties have ensured that many of today’s school-aged children don’t have a min-ute to spare.

While it’s important for kids to em-brace extracurricular activities, parents know it’s not always easy helping kids nd the right activity that allows them to grow outside the classroom while still focusing on their responsibilities inside it. In addition, kids’ interests tend to change

at the drop of a hat, so something they want to do today might bore them come tomorrow. To help kids choose and man-age their extracurricular activities, con-sider the following tips.

Emphasize that schoolwork must come rst. Kids get excited about extra-curricular activities, but parents should emphasize that school still comes rst and that, if schoolwork starts to su er, participation in extracurricular activities will be put on hold until kids get their studies back on track.

Go over coursework at the start of the school year. Examine a child’s course load before choosing an extracurricular activ-ity. It’s important to do this each year, as coursework gets more di cult as chil-dren get older. Go over coursework and requirements as early as possible, prefer-ably before the school year starts, so you and your child can get a grip on what can and can’t be handled.

Get a grasp of the commitment re-quired of a given activity. Extracurricular activities require various levels of commit-

ment. Varsity sport participation, for exam-ple, typically requires daily commitment and often requires kids to participate on weekends or even the sport’s “o -season,” which may include summer vacation. However, volunteering with a local char-ity likely won’t require such a large com-mitment and such charities often allow volunteers to choose their own schedules. Parents and their children should consider the level of commitment an extracurricu-lar requires and choose the activity they’re most comfortable with.

Don’t overlook the social bene ts of extracurricular activities. When helping kids choose an extracurricular activity, it’s

important to leave the ultimate decision in their hands. After all, kids won’t get much of the experience if they’re reluctant to participate. However, parents should not overlook the social bene ts of extracur-ricular activities. Consider those bene ts when helping kids choose activities, espe-cially if they’re likely to choose solitary ac-tivities like learning a musical instrument. It’s good to encourage such interests, but also try to encourage a balance between solitary activities and ones that encourage socialization with peers, such as a sports team, debate club or volunteering with other students at a local charity.

Tips for back to school shoppingEvery year parents spend sig-ni cant amounts of money on school expenses. While there’s not much parents can do about tuition, there are ways to save on additional expenses, including clothing. Restocking a student’s wardrobe can be costly, but sav-vy Moms and Dads can lessen the blow in a variety of ways.

Although students may not yet be ready to head back to class, both parents and children may not be looking forward to school shopping for a number of reasons.

Expenses: Shopping for school items can be a big ex-pense, one that’s especially tough to handle after paying for a summer vacation.

Time: Crowded stores can make shopping stressful, es-pecially when kids (and adults) would rather be spending time elsewhere.

Intimidation: Facing a store full of stocked racks and shelves can make even the most avid shopper feel a little anxious.

Whether school shopping is fun or feared, it’s a necessity for

parents and kids alike. Here are eight tips to make the process a bit easier and help parents save money as well.

1. Assess what is already on hand. Shopping doesn’t have to mean creating an entirely new wardrobe from scratch. It often means supplement-ing existing clothing with new pieces that can make things look fresh. Unless a child has entirely outgrown pants and shirts from last year, chances are there will be a number of pieces that are still usable and appropriate. Take a day or two to go through kids’ wardrobes and set aside items that can be used for school. Make a list of new items to purchase.

2. Establish a budget. Set a limit as to how much will be spent on each child and don’t stray over that limit. Around $150 to $200 may be adequate to pick up a few basics. Taking out cash from the bank and spending only what is in hand may make shoppers less likely to overspend or turn to credit cards for purchases.

3. Stock up on the basics. New undergarments and socks will be needed. Aim for about 10 to 12 pairs of each. This also may be a good time to purchase pre-adolescent girls a training bra or sports bra to provide some support.

4. Buy new shoes. Shoes are one element of a wardrobe that may need to be entirely new. Active children tend to wear out shoes quickly. One pair of sneakers and one pair of dress-ier shoes, like oxfords, or ballet ats for girls, may be adequate.

5. Shop sales. If the weather is warm, it’s possible to save money on clearance T-shirts and shorts that stores are putting on sale to make room for next sea-son’s items. Don’t ll a student’s wardrobe with heavy sweatshirts or sweaters at this juncture. Lay-ering options are good because students can adjust accordingly to feel comfortable.

School shopping signals the end of vacation time. Make the most of the opportunity to save and reduce stress when shopping.

Dr. Qaadri introduces the new OntarioPhoto Card for Etobicoke North

MPP Dr. Shafiq Qaadri introduced the new photo card for

Etobicoke North residents without a driver’s licence to get

official, government-issued photo identification.

“Our government is making it easier for people in Etobicoke

North to get an Ontario Photo Card,” said Dr. Qaadri. “This

government-issued, secure card will make life easier for

eligible residents who choose not to drive but who are still

seeking a recognizable form of ID.”

The Ontario Photo Card is now available at 23 Toronto-area

Service Ontario centres including 988 Albion Road. It will

be offered at all of the province’s nearly 300 Service Ontario

centres by the end of the year.

The Ontario Photo Card makes it easier for Ontarians without

a driver’s licence to travel, open a bank account and perform

any other activities that require official photo ID. The card,

which is available to individuals 16 years of age and over,

costs $35 and is valid for a period of five years.

DANIELLE MILLEY [email protected]

In January 2008, Laura Reinsborough sat around her kitchen table with friends and

strangers talking about the begin-nings of an urban tree harvesting project for Toronto. She had no idea what she was getting herself into.

Today, Not Far From The Tree (NFFTT) is in the middle of its fifth anniversary harvesting season with hundreds of volunteers descend-ing on fruit trees right across the city harvesting everything from mulberries to cherries to apricots; apples and pears will soon be ready for the plucking.

Reinsborough remains an integral part of the organization as its founder and co-ordinator – or the “fruit lady,” as she is routinely recognized as in her St. Clair Avenue and Christie Street neigh-bourhood. The time was right for the project: homeowners signed up their fruit trees, organizations came on board to benefit from the bounty, and the volunteers lined up to get into a pick. The accolades also started piling up, including an Environmental

Award of Excellence from the City of Toronto, an Urban Leadership Award from the Canadian Urban Institute, and, most recently, a Green Toronto Award in the local food category.

Reinsborough, herself, has been named a GreenHero, an Agent of Change by the Centre for Social Innovation, and last

year she received a Women of the Earth Award from the Yves Rocher Foundation.

“I feel really honoured to be a part of it. I feel really grateful to play the role I have in shaping it, to build and grow the project,” she said. “I also feel humbled because this is the work of so many people. It is the 1,200 people who volun-

teer, the 850 tree owners.”“It’s been embraced with open

arms in Toronto.”NFFTT began in Ward 21 St.

Paul’s in the summer of 2008. It has since grown to 14 wards across the city from Scarborough to Etobicoke to North York. The fruit harvesting program works by having homeowners register their tree then volunteers arrive at a pre-determined time for the pick and the fruits of their labour are divided into thirds with a share going to the homeowner, a share to the volunteers and a share to local social service organization, such as Wychwood Open Door.

Kathy Biasi is the manager of this day-time drop-in centre that serves homeless and socially isolated people. It’s been a partner since the beginning.

The people served by Wychwood Open Door have lim-ited funds to buy fresh food for themselves so the donation was welcome.

“It was really nice because it came from the neighbourhood,” Biasi said. “They were being acknowledged by the neighbour-hood.”

As NFFTT expanded to other

neighbourhoods it found partner-ships with local service groups in each neighbourhood – 30 in total – so the fruit stays in the community.

Reinsborough likes that NFFTT can take credit for some of the growing awareness about urban fruit.

“One comment we used to get is, ‘Is it safe to eat?’. We don’t really get asked that anymore. Now we’re starting to show by doing that the food in your backyard is safe,” she said. “Part of what motivates me to continue this project is it’s bring-ing attention to urban ecology in a way. It’s an opportunity to have a more intimate relationship with food in the city.”

NFFTT continues to look for sustainable funding to expand the project, all while helping to mentor other programs in Ontario, across Canada and around the world. Reinsborough said they are also working to find other ways for people to get involved since the demand for picks far exceeds the opportunities.

“It’s a happy challenge to have,” she said. “This wouldn’t work with-out the volunteers, and the fact that so many people are excited about it is awesome.”

to better our community.” The Branch 286 legion

gained its charter in 1940.In recent years, legions

across Toronto, the province and the country have strug-gled to survive financially as dwindling legionnaire mem-bers and membership dues and rental facilities’ revenue bear the operating costs of legion buildings in an era of ever-increasing hydro and heating expenses.

Some legions merge to survive. Others face clo-sure.

Difficult times make it critical for veterans to turn to community benefactors for financial help, said Bill MacAulay, a member of Branch 286 for 44 years.

Ma c Au l a y s e r v e d i n G e r m a n y, Cy p r u s a n d Holland.

“At one time, there was a nucleus of veterans, 1,500 members at this legion,” MacAulay said of the Albion Road-Islington Avenue area

legion. “There was esprit de

corps. In a time of need, we’d circle the wagons and do whatever was needed. Because of changing times, that no longer happens.
