PAST PRESIDENTS
To All Festival Guests, Artists and Organizers:
I would like to welcome you to the beautiful city of Oconomowoc which is honored to once again host the prestigious Festival of the Arts, an event which has continued to grow over the past 44 years and maintains itself as the premier community event for our fine city.
Whether this is your first time here or you are a veteran of many past Festivals, I encourage you to explore our community as your schedule allows. While we are proud of what we are able to enjoy on a daily basis living here and what our city brings to us, we are more proud to show it off to our visitors when they arrive!
My most sincere wishes for your enjoyment of the Festival of the Arts this year. It is a summertime tradition which keeps getting stronger.

DARRON LILLIANDarron received his BFA in drawing and painting at the University of Utah,
and his MFA in drawing and painting at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has been an instructor of art at the college level, teaching drawing, painting, watercolor and photography. He has also worked in the fields of architectural photography, as well as point-of-purchase advertising.
Darron paints en plein air (or “in the open air”). He says, “I search out common place scenes with an unusual twist of topography, color, or detail, and try to show the observer how interesting these landscapes really are. I paint in full sunlight, which lets me see the form, shape, and volume of everything in its path… The scenery and lighting change so fast that a quick method works best on location. I aim for balance between true life rendering of the landscape and an expressionistic sketch.”
Darron has exhibited his work throughout Wisconsin. He is a member of Wisconsin Pastel Artists and Wisconsin Visual Artists. He served as Artist-in-Residence at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in 2010.
2014 Festival Judges MICHAEL STEINKE AKA MYKUL ANJELO
Oconomowoc artist Michael Steinke, known professionally as Mykul Anjelo, discovered his artistic talent in childhood, and has been immersed in the world of art ever since. After earning his degree at Milwaukee Institute of Arts & Design, he worked as an artist and illustrator for clients including the Florentine Opera, the Chicago Opera, Milwaukee County Transit, and many more. His colorful impressionistic paintings have been shown and are in collections throughout Wisconsin and beyond.
Mykul has served as Artist-in-Residence for the Oconomowoc Area School District, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Kettle Moraine School District, and St. Marcus School, Milwaukee. He was awarded a Greenhouse Arts fellowship in China. He was a featured artist of the 2007 MPTV Great TV Auction, as well as the Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts.
Mykulanjelo has been “blessed and honored to be a beacon of creative light and purpose.” His desire is to “inspire, enlighten and engage the oft neglected side of the human experience-the soul-through art.”
Oconomowoc is recognized as an arts community, as evidenced by our art galleries and studios, the popularity of the Festival of the Arts, and Gallery Nights that occur downtown each spring and fall. Local businesses
Fall Gallery Night invite artists and musicians in to the delight of visitors, who stroll through downtown enjoying the sights, sounds, and flavors that Oconomowoc has to offer. The next Gallery Night will occur Friday, November 7.

Ken Lonnquist, a popular Wisconsin folk singer and performer of children's and family-oriented music, will again headline the Youth Stage at the Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts. Sponsored by Target.
Lonnquist Headlines Youth StageThe Festival of Arts is thrilled to be a
part of two activities centered around our beautiful lakes. The Downtown Oconomowoc Business Association will be offering free Pontoon Shuttles to the Festival this year, sponsored by the Boat House. Departures will be every half hour from the city boat launch on Fowler Lake, in the municipal parking lot just north of City Hall. A short jaunt across Fowler Lake will land you at the Festival grounds in Fowler Park.
Look for the Festival’s entry in Light up the Lakes, an annual Venetian boat parade held on Lac la Belle in conjunction with Festival Week. Beautifully lit boats circle the lake at dusk, to the delight of the many spectators. This year’s parade will take place at City Beach on Saturday, August 16 at 8:30 p.m. Special thanks to American Rotary for sponsoring our boat.
Exciting Lake Action
The Children’s Art Tent has a variety of great activities available for children and their families. Children may work with their parents on the activities or be guided by our helpful volunteers. The theme this year is “In Flight”, so come and make a butterfly finger puppet, nature mobile, or paint on a communal mural. All of the activities are free of charge, although the Festival does accept donations to help defray the cost of supplies. Make sure to stop by the tent and release your child’s inner artist!

Festival Awards Ceremony SUNDAY 1:00 P.M.
Be sure to catch the Festival Awards ceremony Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on the Pavilion Stage. The Awards ceremony is the culmination of the festival, and it is wonderful to see the artists rewarded for their creativity and dedication to their artistic vision. Artists awards are presented in the following categories: Best of Category- ceramics, drawing, fiber/leather, glass, graphics/printmaking, jewelry, mixed media 2d, mixed media 3d, painting, photography, sculpture and wood, and Best of Show.
The Festival artists are judged by local artists who view all of the artwork on site at the festival. In order to maintain a fresh perspective the judges change from year to year. See page 12 for the biographies of this year's judges.
Winning artists are extended an invitation to participate in next year's show.
The Festival of Arts is able to maintain a high caliber of art in our show because it is juried, meaning that as part of the selection process artists must submit examples of their work, which is reviewed anonymously by an independent jury. Again, the jury changes from year to year. We are fortunate to have an abundance of talented and generous artists in Oconomowoc and Lake Country to serve as jurors and judges for the festival.
Another important part of the Awards ceremony is the presentation of scholarships. Each year high school students attending Oconomowoc schools or residing in the district are given the opportunity to compete for several scholarships. Over the past 44 years, the Festival of the Arts has awarded over $70,000 in scholarships to students intending to pursue careers in the arts.
This years talented scholarship recipients are featured on page 11. We look forward to seeing you at this year's Awards ceremony.

We encourage everyone to visit the Silent Auction tent. The Silent Auction is a fun way to get a great piece from your favorite Festival artist. The artists demonstrate their commitment to the Festival by donating specially selected pieces, giving Festival-goers an opportunity to bid on their favorites. It is gratifying that artist participation in the Silent Auction is almost 90%.
HOW THE AUCTION WORKSThere are two separate auctions: one on Saturday, and one on Sunday. The
auction opens at 11:30 a.m. and closes at 3:00 p.m. both days. There is a bid sheet attached to each piece with the value (supplied by the artist) at the top. You may enter a bid for any item by placing your name, contact number and bid amount on the bid sheet. You can bid multiple times on any item. We ask that bids be raised in increments of $5.00 minimum.
At 3:00 p.m. all bidding ceases and the winners are determined. Winners will be notified by phone, if necessary. The silent auction team will be available until 5:00 p.m. for payment and pick-up. Cash and check are the preferred method of payment, but Visa/Mastercard is accepted also. Any artwork not picked up on Saturday will be added to Sunday’s auction.
The Silent Auction tent is located directly across the parking lot from the main pavilion. Good luck to all bidders, and thanks for your continuing support of the Festival!

The Oconomowoc arts community lost a valued member when Kathy Boritzke passed away in 2013, after battling breast cancer for many years. Kathy was a muralist and painter who was inspired by the beauty of the natural world as well as by her travels. She was a passionate supporter of the arts, and was a longtime volunteer with the Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts.
The Festival of Arts sponsored Mindful Mixed Media as a tribute to Kathy Boritzke, inspired by her participation in One Vision: A Fusion of Art & Poetry held at the Oconomowoc Arts Center in 2011. Twenty local students in grades 5-8 had the opportunity to work with ekphrastic poet Christina Norcross and sculptor Layl McDill in a fusion of the literary and visual arts.
The students’ poetry and sculpture will be on display in the Children’s Area of the Festival. Torrin Hallett, 2013 OFA Virginia Harris scholarship recipient, working with former OASD band director Dave Ruel, will be providing an original composition to accompany the exhibit.

OCONOMOWOC – Artists and volunteers of the Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts gathered at Jim and Rosann Young’s home on Lac La Belle during the 2013 event.
This party is a celebration for the volunteer committee and the participating artists.
The Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts is a nonprofit organization which administers an annual budget of over $60,000. The organization is completely self-supporting and receives no subsidy from the city.
Artists from around the world applied for the 135 available spaces in the Festival.
Hundreds of local community volunteers participate by acting as hosts during the Festival, keeping the park secure, providing shuttle service, entertaining and housing artists in their homes.
