A Sunday Reflection Faith in God By Fr. Federico Both in our families and in society we frequently encounter today the issue of mistrust. We don’t trust others; we don’t even trust ourselves.

We don’t trust the politicians who govern us, thinking them incompetent or self-seeking. We don’t trust the intentions of other

countries, and thus live in an unrelenting international mistrust. We don’t believe in other people’s promises, whether spouses, parents

or children. We think them selfish, or feel that they cannot deliver on what they have promised. Deep down, we don’t believe in ourselves

either, thinking that we are not worth much. Consequently, we feel uncertain, fearful, at the edge of despair. It is then that the Word of

God speaks to us in the Bible about the importance of faith. The second reading presents Abraham as a model of faith. As we remember

all the difficulties that he faced in his life, so similar to ours today, we will learn to value faith. Abraham is our father in faith.

En nuestras familias y en la sociedad de hoy enfrentamos frecuentemente el

problema de la desconfianza. No creemos en los demás; no creemos en nosotros mismos. No creemos en los políticos que nos gobiernan. Pensamos

que son incompetentes o interesados. No creemos en la buena intención de otros países y vivimos en un continuo recelo internacional. No creemos en promesas de otros, sean esposos, padres o hijos. Pensamos

que son egoistas o que no pueden cumplir con lo que prometen. En el fondo, tampoco creemos en nosotros mismos; pensamos que no valemos mucho. En

consecuencia, nos sentimos inseguros, con miedo, casi con desesperación. En este momento, la Palabra de Dios en la Biblia nos habla de la importancia de

tener fe. La segunda lectura nos presenta a Abrahán como modelo de fe. Al recordar las dificultades por las que tuvo que atravesar en su vida, muy

semejantes a las nuestas de hoy, aprenderemos a conservar la fe. Decimos que Abrahán es el padre de la fe.

We sinners, with forgiveness, become new creatures, filled by the spirit and full of joy. Now a new reality begins for us: a new heart, a new spirit, a new life. We, forgiven sinners, who have received divine grace, can even teach others to sin no

more. “But Father, I am weak, I fall, I fall”. — “If you fall, get up! Stand up!”. When a child falls, what does he do? He raises his hand to mom, to dad so they help him to get up. Let us do the same! If out of weakness you fall into sin, raise your hand: the Lord will take it and help you get up. This is the dignity of God’s forgiveness! The dignity that God’s forgiveness gives us is that of lifting us up, putting us back on our feet, because he created man and woman to stand on their feet.

Registration for RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a course of

study introducing adults 18 and over to the Catholic faith and way of life, will

start on August 14. We request that those registering bring their baptismal

certificate if they have been baptized, and marriage certificates if ever married.

The Holy Father reminds us: “We find ourselves in the Holy Year of Mercy. I hope

that during this Jubilee Year, all the members of the Church renew their faith in

Jesus Christ who is the face of our Father’s mercy, the path that unites God and

man. Therefore mercy is the cornerstone that holds the Church’s life; the first truth

of the Church, in fact, is the love of Christ.” Pray for the living and the dead Visit a cemetery on All Souls Day and pray for the poor souls in Purgatory. Have Mass offered for your deceased family members.
