What is a root/affix and why do we need them?

● A root is the base of a word

● An affix is added to the root/base of a word to change its

meaning.

○ An affix added to the front of a word is called a prefix.

■ Examples: in-, re-, un-

○ An affix added to the end of the word is a suffix.

■ Examples: -ed, -ing, -ly, -es

The Writing Process

● The writing process is a series of steps to follow to create writing.

● The steps for the writing process are:○ Prewriting○ Drafting○ Revising○ Editing○ Finishing/Publishing

Prewriting

● Choose/narrow your topic● Determine your

○ Audience (who will you be talking to)○ Purpose (what is the point of your writing?)○ Point-of-view (are you writing from your perspective/view or someone else’s)

● Brainstorm (What is this?)

You will have to close your eyes when Ms. Johnson tells you to.

When she gives you the “ok”, open your eyes and you will see a topic on the board.

You will have 2 minutes to write down as much as you can about each topic.

You are allowed to use any of the brainstorming methods you want.

When she says STOP, you must put your pencils down and wait for the next topic.

● Select your writing ideas from your PreWriting● Write, Write, Write!● Skip lines● Go from introduction to conclusion, don’t stop in the middle

IT IS CALLED A ROUGH DRAFT FOR A REASON! IT WILL NOT BE PERFECT! YOU WILL NOT GET IT RIGHT ON THE FIRST TRY!!

Revising

● A.R.R.R.○ Adding: is there any other information that the reader

needs to know?○ Rearranging: Is the information presented in the most

logical order?○ Removing: Are there any unnecessary details?○ Replacing: Could I change anything to make my

expressions stronger?

Editing

● Proofread/edit your paper to catch obvious

mistakes in grammar, spelling, word choice

● Use proofreading marks

● Write the proofreading marks on the blank

lines in between (that’s why we skip lines

on rough drafts)

Editing Strategies

● When editing, review your paper for one

type of error at a time.

○ For example, the first time you read,

only look for spelling errors.

○ The second time you read, only look for

grammar errors.

Peer Editing

● It is important to make the peer process useful; Take your classmate’s suggestions serious.

● Useful peer feedback:○ It is given in a positive way!○ It is specific (don’t just say “this doesn’t make sense, tell what

part doesn’t make sense)○ It offers suggestions○ It is given verbally and in writing

Publishing

● Your paper has been edited, revised,

rewritten and is now ready to be turned in.

● The finished product

● DO NOT publish your paper until you feel

your paper is complete!

● If you are not proud of your paper, DO NOT

turn it in!

● Used to describe or help form a visual picture- “Show not Tell”○ You are creating a picture in the reader’s mind using

● When Ms. Johnson gives the go ahead, begin describing how you feel when you come home and find out that your favorite meal is being made. Include the sounds, smells, taste, etc…

Narrative Writing

● Tells a story as it happens

● Uses sensory details to help the reader

“experience” the event

● Chronological order (from beginning to end)

● Examples of narratives:

○ Telling your life story (starting when you were

born to now)

○ Your first day at a new school

○ A memorable moment (happy or sad)

Persuasive/ Argumentative Writing

● Persuades or convinces someone to believe

what you believe

● State your opinion and then support it with

facts/details/examples

● Logical order (most important to least

important or vice versa

Option 3: Explain to someone how to use SnapChat. I’ve never used SnapChat and know nothing about it, so start from the basics, and include filters. You may also want to explain the point/purpose of it.
