Spiritual Reflection In today’s Gospel, there are four exchanges between Jesus and the crowd. In the first, the crowd, having followed Jesus to Capernaum, asks a very matter of fact question: “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus replies by naming their motivation in pursuing him. They have been fed. Jesus acknowledges this yet challenges them to see beyond the fulfillment of their material needs. The crowds have followed Jesus because they have been fed. They ought to be seeking out Jesus because he can give them eternal life. As the second dialogue begins, it seems that the crowd might be on their way to accepting Jesus and his mission. They ask: “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus replies that they must have faith in the one sent from God. But in the third dialogue, the crowd reveals their inability to see Jesus’ true identity. They ask Jesus for a sign so that they might know that Jesus is from God. How strange this sounds since Jesus has just fed more than 5000 people. What is more expected? The conclusion of the dialogue reveals the crowd’s blindness. They ask for what Jesus has just told them they have found: “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus answers plainly that he himself is the Bread of Life they seek. Jesus himself is the Bread of Life who will satisfy every hunger and thirst.

Thank You The floors in the Religious Education Building were striped and waxed. Lots of furniture had to be moved over a three-day period. Faithful volunteers came to help move the tables, chairs, white boards, VBS materials, and a whole lot more! Special thanks to you all – Callie and William Felts, Mike and Alan Oberdorf, Peter Drolet, and John Rotundo. The sharing of your time is appreciated!

Volunteer Corner Are you looking for opportunities to give back to the parish? We have a variety of parish ministries that could use some of your talents. Usher: Ushers assist in welcoming parishioners and guests into Mass and helping them find a seat. Assist in distributing the baskets for the collection and complete other duties during the Mass. Altar Server: Are you interested in serving during Mass? Altar Servers assist the priest and/or deacon, thereby serving the whole community. Parent/guardian permission required if under 18. Must have received First Communion and complete safe environment training. Recycle – Collect recyclable papers and plastic used by the Church. The Church no longer has a recycle bin. Volunteer would just have to collect and bring it to your home and put it in your home bin. Once a week.

Holy Water We are going to give everyone small containers of Holy Water next weekend August 7-8, at all weekend Masses. Holy Water is a magnanimous importance to the faith. Here are some ways we use Holy Water. 1. Bless yourself. You can never have too much grace or blessing in your life. Use holy water daily. 2. Bless your house. You can sprinkle holy water in your home yourself, or have a priest or deacon formally bless your home using holy water as part of the house blessing ceremony. 3. Bless your family. Use holy water to pray and make the Sign of the Cross over your spouse and children before they go to sleep at night. 4. Bless your workspace. If you work outside of the home, sprinkling your workspace with holy water is a great idea, not only for spiritual protection on the work front, but also to sanctify your daily work for the glory of God. 5. Bless your car. Never underestimate the power of holy water applied to your vehicle to keep you safe from harm's way, when used in faith and trust in God. 6. Bless your vegetable garden. Using holy water to bless and sanctify the plants that would be used for the family's sustenance showed their reliance on God's grace. 7. Bless the sick. If you visit the sick, bless their living space with holy water and leave a holy water bottle with them as a comfort in their time of need. 8. Bless your pets. Pets are loved companions for individuals and families and often provide a great service to them, and even these can be blessed with holy water because all creation has the end of giving glory to God.
