welcome!Greetings from Sweet Pea! This year marks the 31st gathering of family, friends, neighbors, and complete strangers, united by community in pursuit of fun. The featured attractions of the Sweet Pea Festival are listed on the following pages. The Festival offers a broad spectrum of the arts, with activities and entertainment for all walks of life. However, the people and the beautiful setting are at least as much a part of this Festival as the performances and exhibitions. More than 1,500 of your neighbors volunteer each year to make this event happen in our perfect natural venue, Lindley Park. The combination of arts, community, and nature is uniquely Sweet Pea, and something one must experience in order to understand. It is my distinct honor to welcome you to Sweet Pea 2008. All of us involved with this year’s Festival hope you have a wonderful time, and that you are able to share the experience with others. If there is anything we can do to make Sweet Pea better, please let us know. Or better yet, volunteer to help us make each Festival better than the last. Enjoy!

about the artist, dana aabergDana Aaberg was born on the way to Bozeman in the front seat of a Mercury station wagon on a cold winter morning in February. He grew up in Bozeman, attended local schools, and went to Montana State University where he graduated with a degree in Professional Design. Aaberg has worked in Boston and Chicago as a designer and graphic artist. He presently maintains a design and art studio in the Emerson Center. He is a former oil painter and air brush artist, shows his work at local galleries, and does occasional artwork for the Big Sky Journal. His work has been described as constantly changing, continually innovative, and drawing from a wide range of infl uences both contemporary and traditional.

Aaberg said, “It was a bit of a lark to enter the Sweet Pea Contest. I haven’t entered the contest since just after I got out of art school, and I don’t want to tell you how long ago that was. I had an idea for it though and thought it might be fun. I have a special affi nity for the vital quality of fl owers and red sweet peas seemed a natural.”

Besides having a special feeling for the organic nature of fl owers, he also has concentrated on horses and the fi gure for subject matter. A recent article in the travel section of the Los Angeles Times by Stephanie Simon described the artwork of Aaberg’s horses as “so full of heat and motion I could almost hear them whinny.” He has been described by Michelle Corriel in the Chronicle’s At Home magazine as “following the creative force of his soul, wherever it may take him.”

poster contestEvery year Sweet Pea Festival sponsors a poster contest with a cash prize for the winning piece. All ages, levels of expertise, and mediums are encouraged to enter. The winner is selected by the Board of Directors.

The original, professionally framed artwork will be raffl ed off to one lucky winner. Tickets are $1 each and available at the Sweet Pea offi ce, Jacobs Crossing Lobby July 28th – July 31st, and Lindley Park during the Festival. The winner will be announced on Saturday after the Big Red performance on the Bowl/Main Stage. Need not be present to win.

You can view all poster contest entries at a special showing in the front windows of Main Street First Security Bank and ERA Landmark Downtown from July 22nd – August 3rd.

music headlinerspaul thorn

Hailing from Tupelo, Mississippi, Paul Thorn writes and performs songs taken from life—good times, bad times, and everything in between. This music is gritty, raucous, full of energy, and with a heart that pumps blood instead of sawdust. There is poetry in roadhouse music like this—music that combines the blues, old-school R&B, roots rock & roll, and a true sense of working-class poetry.

Paul has been invited to tour with heavy hitters such as Sting, Mark Knopfl er, Jeff Beck, John Hiatt, Richard Thompson, Robert Cray, and John Prine. Paul has toured the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

mingo fi shtrapWith a sound dancing between gutbucket soul, N’awlins grit-down funk, and horn-fueled Motown pop, Mingo Fishtrap is an anomaly in the contemporary music scene. With each album, the group gravitates closer to the classic sounds. Young audiences are fl ocking to see a live show that lays its musical roots more in 1968 than 2008. Mingo Fishtrap has been billed with

Sting, Delbert McClinton, The Neville Brothers, Blues Traveler, and more.

One World Taiko presents a contemporary style of Japanese drumming that incorporates dynamic and fl uid movement as well as heart pounding percussion. The music is drawn from Japan’s ancient tradition of lively and spirited festival drumming and One World Taiko’s own creative rhythms, arrangements, and choreography, adding a modern spirit to the ancient tradition of taiko. Their repertoire includes traditional pieces, which were taught to them by the world-renowned groups Kodo and Ondekoza from Japan, and their own original compositions infused with contemporary rhythms from their love of jazz and world music.

His one-man theater/comedy performance dazzles with dynamic sound effects, silly mime and sprightly movement. He doesn’t just tell a story, he walks, he talks, he breathes the story. shorty & stretchThey’re not kidding. This is pure cowboy. T.J. Casey (Shorty) and Jim Reader (Stretch) will have the whole family entertained with music, stories, wisdom, and humor. In his two decades as a performer, Casey has won over thirty awards for singing, song writing, and yodeling while Reader’s signature picking style helped him secure a nomination for the Academy of Western Artists “Rising Star” in 2005. When these two step on stage, you can practically smell the dust of the trail. This is pure American West at its best.

oregon ballet theatreAppearing in Bozeman on the heels of the company’s Washington, D.C. Kennedy Center premiere, Oregon Ballet Theatre’s (OBT) principal and soloist dancers will give the Sweet Pea Festival audience a rare opportunity to experience a performance of George Balanchine’s renowned ballet, “Apollo.” Revered by dancers, audiences, and dance scholars alike, this piece of choreography is considered to be one of the great masterpieces of the 20th Century. “Apollo” is a stunningly brilliant ballet depicting the sun god Apollo and the muses. It combines beautiful music and dance and continues to move audiences 80 years after its creation. Rounding out the performance, and sure to please our Montana audience, OBT’s dancers will also be performing a recently completed original piece by company member, Anne Mueller, to live and previously unproduced recordings by the inimitable country legend, Patsy Cline.

church in the park“Mark Kenoly and The Kingdom Voice” has arrived at the Festival! These singer, songwriters, and directors are worship and assistant pastors bringing their considerable collection of talents from four different churches in the San Francisco Bay area. A favorite at Promise Keepers (providing inspiration to audiences of up to 7,500), they offer combined musical talents spanning 20 years. Come prepared for high-energy music to echo throughout the Gallatin Valley. We invite you to bring your family and friends, or make some new ones, while sharing in this community worship service. Wristbands are required. See you at the Bowl!

sunday - august 3rd - bowl/main stage

The Sweet Pea Festival Ball moves over to The Emerson Ballroom this year to kick off the Sweet Pea festivities on Saturday, July 26th. Mark this date on your calendar because we have one of the hottest up-and-coming swing/rockabilly bands in the Rocky Mountains coming to bless us with a night of foot stomping and body swinging and dipping. The Radio Rhythm Makers out of Salt Lake City have been pleasing young and old alike for the past couple years with their tried-and-true retro sound. No bones about it—this six-piece has the look (slick pompadours, long sideburns, and a knock-out singer with Bettie Page Flair) but they also get “real gone” with a blend of rockabilly, western swing, and classic blues. The seductive vocals mix with some incredibly talented players on sax, stand-up bass, a couple hollow-body guitars, and a heck of a drummer on the trap set. Check them out at: www.myspace.com/theradiorhythmmakers. Doors will open at 7:00 pm followed by a free swing lesson hosted by Dance with Della from 7:30 pm – 8:00 pm.
