Greetings from the Southland By: Dave Hamann

We had a great event down here last month. The King’s and Kohn’s combined for a Random Turn Rally and BBQ. What a blast! and I’m not just say-ing that because Cokie and I tied the Van Heuit’s for first place. Bob and Anne King had us all over the val-ley on the tour and then the destination was Bill & Carolyn Kohn’s beautiful home on the Rogue River where we enjoyed a tri tip BBQ. It really was a fun day! Next up is the Van Heuit’s Photo Rally on 9/13. Then it’s off to Northern California on 10/4 with Dave Duarte leading the way. Good times!

That will be all we had planned for events for the year. I know in Nov when the weather is generally crisp and cool, I always get the urge for one last run before Win-ter. If anyone has an idea for a fun day trip for Novem-ber, let us know.

The end of the year is Election time again. If you’d like to run for one of the Board offices, let Dave Duarte know so we can get your name on the ballot. We’ll have the ballot on the website this year and do all the voting electronically.

I guess that’s it for now.

Please come out and support the events your fellow members have worked so hard on for you. They do the work so you all can have a fun day. Let them know you appreciate it.

Hope to see you there! Dave

So Chapter - Random Turn Rally By: Bob and Anne King

Hard to believe that a rally that consists of 94.2 miles with 16 random turns and loads of special instructions can have two teams that got the mileage ex-actly correct. We started out in Med-ford and headed southwest through Jacksonville and out through the Applegate Valley winding our way towards Grants Pass. We all had a great lunch hosted by Carolyn and Bill Kohn. Their home overlooking the Rogue River was a perfect set-ting for the 36 Porsche nuts who willingly undertook this adventure. Tied for first place were the teams of Bob and Marilyn Van Heuit and Dave and Cokie Ha-

mann; each team won gift certificates to local restau-rants. Third place went to Duane and Fran Marshall, who were only .3 of a mile off; they were awarded a gift certificate to Starbucks. Winners of the drawing for a bottle of wine were Duane and Laurel Merkel. This

event brought out lots of laughs, funny stories and for-gotten math skills. Judging by the sweat, eraser dust and pleas for help, the math part of this event might have been the most challenging part of the whole day.

SUNRIVER FESTIVAL OF CARS 2008 By: Dave Duarte

This year’s auto show was held on Meadows Golf Course driving range located di-rectly behind the Sunriver Resort Lodge at Sunriver Resort , 15 miles south of Bend, Ore-gon. The event has taken place during the past 12-year history at the Village Market Mall and this was the first year it was held at the Sunriver Resort golf course. It was a spectacular setting and a virtually unlimited capacity for participants and spectators. Over 200 enthusiast cars of all makes and vintages participated at this fantastic event. Of particular inter-est were the Enzo Ferrari, owned and driven by world renown auto dealer Ron Tonkin of Portland, several Lamborghini Murcielago’s, a unique McLaren F1, and a Carrera GT. There were Porsches of every vintage, in-cluding several new GT3RS’s . Carrera Motors had in-tended to unveil and introduce the new 2009 Porsche 997 but the demo car did not arrive in transport in time for the show.

Spectators were able to relax in the hospitality tent and listen to the Festival’s live mu-sic as well as check out the many ven-dor displays, featur-ing many automo-tive concepts as well as many non-

Page 10: AugSept2008Auspuff

automotive concepts that fit the car entusiast’s life-style. Master of Ceremonies, Keith Martin, publisher of SPORTS CAR MARKET and television automotive dig-nitary, kept the show lively throughout the day and showcased each model in a select parade of cars where he interviewed each owner as he drove through a showcased area. Best of Show award went to Ron Tonkin for his Enzo Ferrari.

This event actually lasts from Friday through Sunday with the main auto show on Saturday sandwiched be-tween a Friday night welcome reception, a Sat-urday evening Festival Banquet at Sunriver Re-sort, and Sunday breakfast at Cal-dera Springs Lake House, par-ticipation in the Sunday Dash, a

two hour romp through the Central Oregon coun-tryside on in-teresting, lightly trav-eled roads. And after the Dash, the event culmi-nates with a BBQ/picnic at

a scenic outdoor location.

So put this event on your Septem-ber 2009 calendar as a MUST DO event !

Cascade Region Elections

Northern California Drive - Oct 4th

This last event of the year for the Southern Chapter is a day drive on the scenic back

roads of Northern California.

Meet at 9:30 AM

Medford Barnes & Noble - 1400 Biddle Road

From Medford we will be heading down I5 to the Highway 96 exit where we will follow the

Klamath River Road west to Steelhead. At Steelhead we will head south along the Scott

River to our picnic spot at Jones Beach.

Please bring a picnic lunch and whatever you

care to drink as there is nothing available for purchase at the picnic spot. After lunch we

will work our way back to I5 via Fort Jones and Yreka.

This is an exceptionally scenic drive on roads

made for Porsches. We last ran this drive in

2001 and it stands out as one of the best drives the club has ever taken.

Can you identify this month’s car? This foreign two seater was built between 1952 - 1956. It had a 2600cc four cylinder of 90 to 110 hp. The model number of the car came from its being able to break that number of miles per hour. Later, a slightly larger model with a 6 cylin-der was introduced and was in production until 1967. We need the name and model of the

car.

Email or call Ole before October 25th with your answer

[email protected] or 541-472-1537

And from last month, the answer is ….

Lotus Elite

John Crisalli & Bill Lucas had the correct answer.

Well done folks!
