I love summer.  Mind you, what's not to love.  The sun and warm weather provide the ultimate reward for all the grey, rainy winters here on the west coast.  The ocean, mountains and beaches provide a very nice background.  Throw in the beautiful west coast women and live music all around and you have summer in Vancouver.  I moved west 21 years ago from the prairies with their winters and have never, ever considered moving back.  Time off in the summer is spent here because, quite frankly, why go anywhere else?

I also love the music of summer.  I'm talking about the hit songs of the summer.  For instance, I remember when the albums Rumours and Grease were practically the only thing you'd hear, but I have more specific memories of songs from over the years.  A lot of the songs weren't necessarily popular with the masses, but whenever I hear one of those songs, I'm taken back to the time when it was on my song list.  Songs such as War's "Why Can't We Be Friends?", "Sultans of Swing" and Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" always provide a nice nostalgic feeling because they were the soundtrack for good times.  I'm not even sure what time of year these songs came out, but during the beautiful summer they stick with you.   Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" will always be one of my favourite songs because of an incredible summer evening in San Diego too many years ago.

As nostalgic as all of this may seem, the thing I've learned over the course of these too many years is that life is a book.  And there are all of these chapters, and whenever something ends or changes, it just means that a new chapter is beginning.  I don't usually enjoy change, especially if it means learning something new.  But I know that it's on me to make it as a good or better than the previous chapter.  In that vain, I have started a new chapter.  And I decided that this new chapter must have music.  So I bought myself a nice Bose speaker and I am now streaming.  That's right.  I said it.  Streaming.  And guess what?  I like it. Peace out.

BRUCE’S CORNERBC ARTIST HIGHLIGHT :

We were blown away by 16 yr old Bukola Balogun who blessed us with her voice and music on the FP Long & McQuade stage at The Bennett this past July 25 for the Youth Jam! What a voice! Port Moody secondary student Bukola won the Juno Battle of the Bands this past March, “scoring $25,000 in scholarships from the Nimbus School of Recording and Media in Vancouver,” according to the Tri-City News! We invite you to follow her on Instagram and subscribe to her on YouTube as she is surely a musical force to be reckoned with. Here’s hoping Bukola joins us at the next Youth Jam @ The Bennett on Aug 8!

If you have an interest in jazz and have an appreciation for saxophone then there should be no doubt that you have heard of John Coltrane. Coltrane made an enormous impact in the jazz world of the 1950s and 60s. He played with some of the best (Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk….) before branching out to lead his own bands and record his own songs. Like other musicians of those times, he went through a rough period battling drug addiction and the bottle. Determined to kick these habits once and for all, he came back stronger with a cleaner self to make his mark in jazz history. His journey wasn’t about ego or bravado but about being a seeker and pioneer of new musical directions. He never wanted boredom to creep in with stagnate music. He wanted people to be uplifted, happy and inspired by his playing even if his playing sometimes seemed wild and somewhat angry.

A MUSICIAN SUPREME by D.M. White

Coltrane was a part of that great New York jazz scene and toured in other countries around the globe before his premature death in 1967 at 40 years old. His wife Alice Coltrane played in his band briefly and went on to make a fine career for herself in later years. Their son Ravi Coltrane (named after sitar player Ravi Shankar) is an accomplished saxophonist as well, playing at the 2017 Montreal Jazz Festival. I was quite disappointed not to be able to get a ticket for that show! Two good sources I have recently discovered for getting more familiar with John Coltrane are the 2016 bio-film “Chasing Trane” and the book "Coltrane on Coltrane”, which features most of the interviews that he ever did.
