Topic Description Liquid crystalline networks (LCNs) are versatile functional materials because of the unique properties of liquid crystalline molecules, e.g., self-organization, reversible phase transition, and macroscopic orientation under external fields. The coupling between LC molecules and polymer networks allows these remarkable properties to be transferred to the bulk material and has resulted in a number of functional LCNs that are thermally-responsive and can change their shape reversibly due to the reversible LC phase transition upon temperature cycling. The incorporation of photo-responsive chromophores into LCNs allows the material to convert light energy into mechanical work because of the transformation between two geometrically different azobenzene isomers upon light irradiation. Here we demonstrate a simple route to incorporate three functional building blocks, including azobenzene chromophores, liquid crystals, and dynamic covalent bonds, together into a liquid crystalline epoxy network. The three functionalities show good compatibility and the resulting material can exhibit various photomechanical responses, dual-stimuli induced shape memory and self-healing properties, and excellent processability and recyclability. Speaker Bio Dr. Michael R. Kessler is the Berry Family Director and Professor of the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University. As the chief academic and administrative officer for the school, he is responsible for teaching, research, and outreach in the mechanical and materials engineering programs. His research and teaching interests are in the mechanics, processing, and characterization of polymer matrix composites, nanocomposites, and bio-based polymers. Prior to joining the faculty at Washington State University, he held faculty positions at Iowa State University and the University of Tulsa. He obtained his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His honors include Young Investigator Awards from the Army Research Office and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, an NSF CAREER award, and the Elsevier Young Composites Researcher Award from the American Society for Composites. Ralph Snyderman, MD (Chancellor Emeritus, Duke University and James B. Duke

Professor of Medicine in the Duke University School of Medicine), who has created a transformative environment to improve our nation’s health over the last 40 years. During this time, he led the transition of the School of Medicine at Duke University into a globally recognized leader of academic medicine and played a

leading role in the conception and development of Personalized Health Care, an evolving model of national health care delivery. He was amongst the first to envision and articulate the need to move the current focus of health care from the treatment of disease-events to personalized, predictive, preventive, and

participatory care that is focused on the patient.

Irv Weissman, MD (Director of the Institute of Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine), contributed to the understanding of

hematopoiesis and moved the field of stem cell research forward to make successful treatments a reality. Not only was he instrumental in isolating the first blood-forming stem cells in mice and humans early on, he is also recognized for isolating human Leukemia cancer stem cells. University with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, and from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. Dr. Sepp-Lorenzino joined Alnylam in 2014, and is leading the Hepatic Infectious Disease Strategic Therapeutic Area.
