As I reflect on this last week month yearhellip it all runs togetherhellip what a tremendous year of 4-H
355 youth enrolled in 4-H in 2016-17 in the Aurora Jerauld-Buffalo and Sanborn Counties 387
youth were involved in school enrichment programs 866 youth participated in 4-H Special Interest
Programs Your leadership as volunteers and parents are the driving force behind the 4-H program
Your passion for 4-H blows me away day in and day out 4-H registered 9497 youth members across
the state of South Dakota this year and reported its 6th consecutive year of growth The numbers
above are a testament to all the small differences culminating to a larger good
I challenge you with this question-
ldquoWhere is your leadership making a small differencerdquo We need to create conditions where our leadership can thrive Cultivating an environment to grow
our 4-H youth program is my number one priority The benefits to 4-H are endless and it is my hope
we as a group can highlight those benefits and continue to grow the possibilities The county SDSU
Extension office serves as your resource for 4-H crops livestock food and families community de-
velopment and horticulture A person will only grow as fast as their
most limiting resource So I urge you to be specific in your priorities
and engaged in the processes We have lots of new and exciting pro-
gram opportunities ahead If there is anything that you as a leader are
passionate about or have skills to share please let the office know We
are always open to new ideas Have a great 4-H WEEK

Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is a national multi-species quality assurance program for youth ages 8-21
with a focus on three core pillars food safety animal well-being and character development The YQCA program is an
annual certification created for youth producing and or showing beef dairy sheep goats pigs poultry and rabbits The
program has been designed by Extension specialists and national livestock program managers to ensure it is an accurate
current and relevant to the needs of the animal industry and show and is appropriate for youth learning levels
South Dakota 4-H believes that the YQCA program provides a great opportunity for our youth who are participating in
food producing animal projects For the first year (2018) SD 4-H will require YQCA for youth participating in swine pro-
jects that exhibit at county or state fair Audra Scheel will be a trainer for the YQCA program and will lead in person train-
ings to be scheduled at a later date For (2019) all youth participating with food producing animal projects will be re-
quired to be certified
The registration fee for instructor led trainings will be $3 per person and the online fee will be $12 per person For more
information on the YQCA program please contact Audra Scheel
