BRASS - VIDEO RECORDED AUDITION GUIDELINES AND INSTRUCTIONS The following are guidelines to be used when recording the audition video: Recordings must be submitted online through Acceptd. Physical CDs, DVDs, tapes, emailed files and YouTube links will not be accepted. For technical support with your Acceptd submission, please contact [email protected]. The recording should be in a video format such as MP4, MOV, MPG, MPED, etc. Video submissions must be in one continuous take that includes all components. Video submissions must not be edited. The total time of your audition video should be no more than 12 minutes. Final audition videos must be submitted by Sunday, May 17, 2020 at 11:59pm. Tips and Tricks for the Audition Video The student should state their name at the top of the video. They should also state information such as the scale they are playing and the name of their prepared piece or excerpt. Stay within the frame. It is okay to move your head, hands and body – be natural and not stiff. Your face, hands, instrument and bow stroke (if applicable) should remain in the frame while you are playing. There is no specific dress code requirement though dressing nicely may help exude more confidence and wearing pajamas may be frowned upon. Stand close enough to the camera that we can see you but not so close that the sound quality distorts or part of your instrument is out of frame. We recommend making a test recording to make sure you are happy with the way it looks and sounds. While you will not be evaluated on the quality of the device, we want to be able to see and hear you in your best form. If you have multiple recording settings on your device, experiment with increasing the quality. Don’t leave your recording for the last minute. Practice the music you’ll be submitting well before the deadlines and don’t leave the final recording for the last day. A number of things can go wrong with the recording so plan ahead, figure out what you’re going to record with, get your questions answered, and fix any problems in enough time to meet the deadlines. It may also be helpful to record a few practice videos in advance. When preparing your excerpts (but not when making your video), listen to a recording of the excerpt with a full orchestra to put the excerpt in context. Breathe. Everyone wants you to succeed! If possible, ask your private lesson teacher and/or school band or orchestra director for help preparing for your video.

REPERTOIRE AND REQUIREMENTS

BYSO auditions are open to students entering grades K-12. Please follow the audition standards that most closely match your current level of playing. Candidates audition for BYSO – not a specific ensemble – and selected candidates will be placed in an orchestra based on level. Please note that due to the competitive nature of auditions, placement is not guaranteed, and BYSO members must re-audition each year.

Scales (by memory)

Horn • B-flat major scale.• G major scale.

Trumpet • B-flat major scale, either 1- or 2-octaves, as is comfortable.• A minor scale (natural, harmonic, or melodic), either 1- or 2-octaves, as is

comfortable.

Trombone and Tuba • C major scale, either 1- or 2-octaves as is comfortable.• A major scale, either 1- or 2-octaves as is comfortable (more experienced

trombonists should submit 2-octave A major).

Solo Selections

Prepare two contrasting selections from your solo repertoire that demonstrate both a lyrical/slow and a technical/fast style of playing. Your prepared music should be chosen, in consultation with your teacher, from the standard solo literature for your instrument. Pieces from popular songbooks and band parts are not acceptable audition selections. The total time of your solo portion of your recording should be no more than 8 minutes.

Excerpts

Consult with your teacher, as possible, and record as many of the excerpts as they feel is reasonable. For students at the PW level this might be zero; students aspiring for placement in BYS should record all excerpts. If possible, please record both lines of the duet in excerpt 1.

AUDITION VIDEO FAQ Should I play with piano accompaniment? No. Videos must be recorded without accompaniment. What type of device should I use to record my video? Videos will not be evaluated on the quality of the recording device, i.e. a reasonably good and clear computer or smartphone recording should be sufficient. Should the content on my video be memorized? Memorization is required for scales but not for excerpts or solo pieces. When will I receive my audition results? Audition results will be released mid- to late-June via the Acceptd portal only. What is the deadline for submitting the audition video? Final audition videos must be submitted by Sunday, May 17, 2020 at 11:59pm. If I prepare the standards for one orchestra, am I only considered for that orchestra? You are auditioning for BYSO, not a specific orchestra. The standards you prepare for should most closely match your current level of playing, but you may be placed in a different orchestra based on the level of your submission. Please note that due to the competitive nature of auditions, placement is not guaranteed, and BYSO members must re-audition each year.

How to Frame Your Audition Video

GOOD:

- The player may stand or sit, either is OK!

- We see the player from the front, at a slight angle

- The player’s instrument and hands are in the image

- The player is not too close to the recording device

- The player is clearly lit

- There are no distracting elements

- The music stand does not block the view of the fingers or embouchure

Page 5: Audition Video Images

BAD:

- The music stand is blocking part of the view

- The fingers, embouchure, or instrument are not visible

The recording device is too close

Bright light sources in the background make it hard to see the player clearly
