EMS – WWRY Audition Pack !2

About WWRY We Will Rock You is not just a jukebox musical that pays homage to Queen; it is a show that explores the importance of independence and freedom of thought, while celebrating the power of art and music. Set in a dystopian future, where music and individuality are banned, WWRY follows the story of misfit and dreamer, Galileo. Like all dystopian heroes, Galileo knows that something is not right with the world that he lives in. Determined to find the place where the champions play, Galileo joins forces with Scaramouche and the Bohemians to bring down Killer Queen and her soulless world.

Casting Information and Requirements • All members of the WWRY cast must be 16 years or older at the time of the show.

• Previous experience and looks/appearance may be considered in addition to audition performance in casting decisions.

• Due to the restrictions of the stage and backstage area, the cast for We Will Rock You will be limited to a maximum of 35 people.

Character Breakdown Lead Roles

Character Description Vocal Range

Galileo Male (20s)

A misfit and a dreamer. When we first meet Galileo he is a sullen and disaffected outcast. He is completely confused by the voices he hears in his head and wants nothing more than to break away from his current world. As the show progresses, he develops more clarity in his purpose, finds a sense of belonging, and subsequently develops happiness.

D below middle C to A above middle C. High rock voice with strong falsetto. Full voice falsetto is to E two above Middle C.

Scaramouche Female (20s)

A misfit and an outcast with a sharp wit. Like Galileo, Scaramouche does not fit in with the Gaga kids. Her social isolation has left her angry and driven by self-loathing. Scaramouche is strong and determined and while she gains more self-confidence during the show, she never loses her feisty, sarcastic attitude.

E below middle C to E two above middle

C. Strong rock belt.

Killer Queen Female (30+)

The quintessence of power and narcism, Killer Queen is half pixelated, half human and all bad. All that matters to Killer Queen is power, control and fame; she wants to dominate the world and will crush anyone or anything that gets in her way. The actress playing Killer Queen needs to create a persona that is sexy and alluring while also terrifying and domineering.

E below middle C to E two above middle

C. Full soul/rock voice.

Khashoggi Male (35+)

Vain and on a power trip, Khashoggi is the sinister chief of the Global Soft Police with an inferiority complex. He is almost as nasty as Killer Queen, but he often completes his missions in a bungling, maladroit way. A role with great comedic potential, Khashoggi spends the entire show trying to assert his power and cover up his mistakes.

D below middle C to Bb above middle C. High rock baritone with strong falsetto.

Full voice falsetto to E two above middle C.

* Please note: all characters will be required to speak with an ENGLISH ACCENT.

Ensemble and Featured Roles WWRY is an ensemble driven show. The shows features numerous opportunities for cast to be featured. For our production, we will divide the cast into three large groups; the GaGa Kids, the Bohemians and the Yuppies. All ensemble will be featured as GaGa Kids and they will then be divided into Bohemians and Killer Queen’s Yuppies. The breakdown for each group is below. Please note, that Yuppies will be required to do more precise and stylised dancing than the Bohemians.

Buddy Male (40s/50s)

An old, hippy librarian with a knack for being inappropriate, Buddy is determined to ensure that the “truth [is] never forgotten.” This is a comic role, and the actor needs to balance the stereotype of the stoned, somewhat vague hippy with Buddy’s actual passion to save music.

E below middle C to E above middle C.

Light rock voice.

Brit Male (20/30s)

Oz’s boyfriend and one of the Bohemians, Brit is determined to find the place where the champions played; he will literally do whatever it takes. He is originally dubious about Galileo but begins to accept him.

D below middle C to B above middle C.

Full rock voice.

Oz Female (20/30s)

Like Brit, Oz is also passionate about finding the music. She hates the GaGa kids and Global Soft. She is fuelled by determination and is filled with love for Brit.

A below middle C to E two above middle

C. Strong rock belt.

Teacher Female 30+

Teacher and a spy for Global Soft/Khashoggi.

Audition Process All individuals auditioning for WWRY will be required to complete a singing and dance audition. Those individuals wishing to audition for a lead role or featured ensemble part will be required to also complete a set reading.

The information below outlines both the expectations of the production team and the requirements for each facet of the audition process.

SINGING AUDITION

We Will Rock You features more than 24 hit Queen songs; ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen,” “We Will Rock You,” “Somebody To Love,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and many more. As this is a Rock Musical, the cast will need to have strong voices and be prepared to work on creating a strong/rock sound. Females will be required to develop a range of vocal styles (strong controlled belt/mix, sultry alto notes and light floaty upper register). Males will be required to also utilise a strong belt/mix sound, sustained upper notes and possible falsetto notes.

ALL auditionees will be required to sing a Queen song. People auditioning solely for an ensemble role are permitted to use a backing track and select their own Queen song. Individuals auditioning for a lead role will be required to sing a song from a set list. This song must be performed with piano.

SINGING AUDITIONS ON THE DAY A pianist and CD/MP3 player will be available on the day. Please ensure that: - You provide music for your song. Please place this in a display folder. (Sheet music will be provided

for lead roles) OR

- Provide a backing track. This track should have no vocals on it. Please bring an adaptor if you intend to play music using an iPhone 7.

DANCING AUDITION

Previous productions of We Will Rock You are known for their precise dance chorus to the iconic songs of Queen. We need a dance chorus to lead these dances. There is nothing to prepare in advance. The choreographer will set and then drill a short routine. Whilst assessing technique and current ability, a willingness to learn will also be an important element in the audition. The dance audition itself will then be performed in small groups.

The production team will be looking for dancers who not only have the technical and stylistic qualities required, but who are also able to pick up choreography quickly.

EMS – WWRY Audition Pack !5

Please see table on page 6 for the set songs.

In addition to technique, we are also looking for strong character movers and enthusiastic performers. If you have any acrobatic, gymnastic or cheerleading skills, please note this on your audition form. Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes that you can easily move in to your dance audition. (No thongs) It is important that you are warmed up and stretched prior to the audition to avoid injuries. No time will be provided for a warm up in the dance audition. Please note that you must attend a dance audition, regardless of the role for which you are auditioning. All auditions will be filmed for casting purposes. All footage will be destroyed at the end of the process.

READING AUDITION

Any individual wishing to audition for a lead role will be required to perform a scene from the show. These will be available in digital form on the EMS website. While performers are not required to memorise the script, it is expected that they have prepared the piece and carefully considered/developed the character they are auditioning for.

All auditionees should be prepared to receive some direction during their audition. This may mean that some readings will be cut short.
