Audience Research Qualitative

Age: 40 – 60Gender: Female and maleSocial class: Working class Ethnicity: British/Southern USAInterest: People who like soulful music, who like a good old laugh, people who like to do a bit of dancing to it, people who like going out.Dress sense: The mise-en-scene, people in black/brown boots, and black/brown cowboy hats, jeans trouser or skirts could be seen as very working class clothing, plaid t-shirt style. Why they listen to country music? I guess they’re trying to find the good old simple days, where all that matter were farm, food, horses, bars, simple entertainment dancing, singing, playing on the guitar and other instrument, doing performances, etc. How often do they listen to Country music? When there’s time. What they’ll like in a Country magazine: I guess they’ll like advertisement of Country music concerts, Country dance class for people who want to learn to dance or just enjoy dancing in groups. Inside the pages, containing interviews and latest news on Country artist and bands.

For this task, I asked people that are interested in Country music. MollyMegan Mohamed

1. Looking at the music magazine’s main image, do you find it’s easier to tell about the genre by the artist/band holding their instrument? Do you think it’s suitable?

Looking back at my own results, they would prefer the artist/band holding their instrument, as it would relate to the type of music they play, and it would look more appropriate, as this is a music magazine. ‘It’s suitable’, ‘relates to the music’.

2. Would you more likely buy a music magazine with the artist or band that you already know, or someone new?

By the opinions people often sticks to something they already know quite well themselves. My point proven as all three of them says they would buy it if it’s base on someone they know, as it’s more familiar for them and they know it would be something they would read. ‘Yes, something I know’, ‘I would stick to something I know, unless you want to try something new’.

3. Do you prefer listening to artist or bands? And why?

In my force group two out of three said they’ll listen to band, the reason being, ‘Band, as they’re all working together, creates an atmosphere’, ‘Artist, because they do everything themselves.’

4. Why do you think so many people heard of Taylor Swift? By advertisement, radio, concerts...

I receive two quite intresting answers, ‘The age group, how sweet she is’, ‘Media, radio, TV, publicity’. I find age group has a strong influence of who listens to certain music, as they find it’s more easier to relate to as it’s someone close to their age.

5. What attracts you to buy a music magazine? By the gifts, the main image, the coverlines...

They are attracted to pick up this magazine because of it’s main image, different coverlines, or if it had been advertise or recommend by a friend. ‘Main image’, ‘The artist on the cover that draws me in’ ‘Recommend by a friend’

6. Do you buy a music magazine in general, if not why? Is it because of the price, main image, no gifts...?

One, she buys music magazine every week, my other interviewer said he would rather just go to their website. With this idea in mind, I would think about advertise somewhere on my contents page, that you could also go on this website or extra information, or photographs.

7. When you are buying a music magazine, what would you expect to see on the cover?

The cover should be ‘clean and neat’, ‘more class, less catchy phrase. No flashy images’ These answers are saying my photograph for the main image should be as clear and fresh looking as possible, to relate more to what country artist/band would look like.

8. Do you prefer reviews or interviews? Why did you choose this?

Most of them would prefer interviews as the reader could get to know their artist better. Reviews don’t really say much, in my opinion, it’s much funnier reading a review. ‘Interview, because you get to know them better’, ‘Interview... firsthand experience’.

9. Why do you think not many people like Country music?

‘Too slow, the instrument sound quite similar, and it’s relaxing’, ‘Because of their generation , how they were brought up, all very similar’, ‘depend on how old you are’, all of these answers very common, it’s all come down to one base line age, this is a problem. However I could use this point to sell my magazine, only to a certain age and don’t need to appeal to a wide target audience.
