Audience for The Descent - 2: Fans of extreme sports
Transcript of Audience for The Descent - 2: Fans of extreme sports
Caving, known as spelunking in North America or potholing in the
United Kingdom, is the main extreme sport used in The Descent’s story line. White water rafting is also used in the beginning of the movie, and BASE-‐jumping is also mentioned.
The reason I think people who do extreme sports may watch The Descent is because the movie makes sufficient use of such sports throughout the entire movie. The movie starts with the girls white-‐water rafting and most of the movie is based on caving, also known as spelunking or potholing. People who do extreme sports may find the use of their favourite sports in a horror movie appealing and interesting to them. One may say that they find amusement in pointing out the flaws of The Descent’s use of extreme sports, for instance the movie may use the wrong equipment or demonstrate incorrect demonstration of the equipment. The lifestyle of these people can be obvious: they are periodically out and about, taking part in extreme sports of their choice or trying a new sport. They may be rarely staying still at day, but they might stay at home at night, as a break from their sport. Their gender is unspecified, however like horror fans, males may be a dominant gender for this group of audience. The common age for extreme sport fans tend to be 20-‐39 year olds, as they are the most common ages for professional and extreme sporting activities. They may have a larger spending power than horror fans as they may spend bulks of their finances on places to book and do their activities at.
