I created a survey to find out what the target audience expected from a punk music video. I also did this to understand their demographics.

So I asked the following questions, sent it out to social networking site and collected the results.

What is your age?

The majority of the target audience are between the ages of 16 and 20. This explains why the genre is considered a youthful, aggressive one.

What is your gender?

There were more males who completed the survey, suggesting that the target audience are predominately male. However, the gap between was very slim, with 54.5% being male.

Do you watch a lot of punk/ hard-core music

videos?

63.6% said that they had watched several videos of the genre, with the remainder saying ‘yes’, meaning that they have most likely watched many punk music videos. This means that I have to follow the conventions in order to create a successful music video, as the target audience already know what to expect from one.

In my video, I’ll need to focus mostly on how the characters act, as the audience respond positively to this mostly.

What punk music videos (or punk sub-genre videos) have you taken influences

from? (can also be from live footage) Tick more than one if necessary.

The audience mostly took influence from bands such as the Sex Pistols, Green Day and Black Flag. I should certainly respond to this by researching into these bands and seeing what content they have in their video. I’ve already selected Green Day and analysed one of their videos, taking some influence from them, therefore I will have a similar influence from the target audience. This means that it shall be easier for me to know what should be displayed in my video in order to appeal to the target audience.

What hobbies/ interests do you have?

The response was rather balanced, aside from the ‘listening to music’ option, which 90.9% responded with. As for the other options, there was playing video games, watching TV/film, socialising, skating/cycling, exercising and playing a musical instrument, which all received near even responses. This means that the target audience all share similar interests and therefore possibly similar expectations from a music video.

What do you expect from a punk music video?

The target audience basically expect a lot of energy, a conventional location with a crowd.These are the usual things that can be seen in punk music video, so I can apply these to my music video.

What filters do you expect to see in a music video? e.g. greyscale, sepia,

cartoon style etc. And please specify why.

The responses were balanced about the colour, but many mentioned heightening the contrast.I should consider increasing the contrast on my video, as many punk bands have done. I could make a compromise between the colours to appeal to both those who like the greyscale look and those who think colour is important, by lowering the saturation so there is only a hint of colour.

Following the conventions and the expectations of the target audience, I shall create a music video with the expected props and costume, making it a typically punk video. In the next slide, there shall be a visual collage of what the target audience would expect to see.
