Our audience feedback is from our classmates who once we completed our music video, they watched it and answered a series of questions we gave to them about our video. They have been truthful with their answers and given us good advice to take on board. Answers about what filming and editing fitted with our brand image and things that we could have made better.

Q1. Was the pace of the video right for

the song? After looking back over the questionnaire’s every single answer to this question was yes. We were please about this because we chose to do it slow paced as we believed that if we made it fast paced it would have ruined the entire video as that wouldn‘t have fitted with the song and also our artists genre and

brand image.

“Yes, slow pace for a slow song.”

“Yes - slow pace, slow editing, slow song.”

“the slow editing worked well with the song.”

Q2. Do you think the genre of a singer/songwriter fits the style of this

video? Why?

Once again we got a yes from every single class mate for this question. We were pleased that all seemed to understand our genre and brand image of our singer/songwriter which was very important for us to get across to our audience well.

“Yes, very emotional, it made me feel sorry for her.”

“Yes, because there’s a sense of individuality.”

“The innocence of the artist fits well with the style of the video.”

“Nice adding of the piano, mood sits in well.”

“The video focuses on the artist and they work.”

“Yes, as it was location based and very simple, with no performance. Etc.”

Q3. Do you enjoy watching this video? What parts interest you? Why?

We got good feedback from our audience for this question as all fifteen of them enjoyed watching the video and said that certain parts in the video really interested them. They said parts were different but all worked well as the editing constantly continued to match the genre and song. These were moments such as the piano clips as we did birds eye view shots, close ups of the hands playing it and side shots of our artist. Etc.

“Yes, the piano scene is different as you can’t see her face.”

“Yes, I thought the editing matched the song.”

“I enjoyed the part with the cars rushing past her as it shows she is stuck in that moment but everyone else is just carrying on with their lives.”

“The jar with the lit candle inside was good as it was a metaphor of the ‘jar of hearts’ and symbolized her being heart-broken.”

“I liked the clip of her flicking her hair back repeated three times as it showed real emotion of the artist which represented the lyrics.”

Q4. Which parts in the video didn’t work? Why?

When our classmates were answering this question we got the same answer from a few of them, which was “I think it would have looked a lot more realistic if their artist would have been able to play the piano in the piano shots and be in time to the song”. They thought this one thing was very important to follow our singer/song writer genre. Whilst creating the footage for our music video we noticed this problem but as she couldn’t play the instrument there was nothing we could do about it, and it is very difficult to have everything such as finding the perfect person to fit into our brand image and also play the piano. Etc. As our artist was definitely the right choice for our genre and brand image, we believed she had the perfect look for it, but it was a shame she couldn’t play the piano also as that would have been brilliant.

Q5. Do you think there could be any improvements? If so, why?

All of our classmates thought their could have been some improvements to our music video and we took and board. As when they said them we thought that what they mentioned would have been good in our video and other things they said we had already realised ourselves. We appreciated all the advice we got as we think their can always be improvements to be made and nothing is perfect.

“Lip movements could have been more exaggerated.”

“Yes, they could have had more things going on because the artist walking around with the candle gets repetitive.”

“A bit more to the story line, more scenes. Etc.”

When someone said this in the feedback it made us remember that we were worried at the start of creating our music video, that this could be a problem. However, the reason we chose in the end to have this candle with our artist at all times is because we wanted to create continuity editing following the idea of her being heart broke throughout the full video until the end when we got her to blow the candle out.

We do agree with this comment as at the beginning of the video when we have a medium shot of her in the subway our artist was mumbling and it wasn’t obvious that she was singing the song. Although later in the video when she got more comfortable with being filmed her lip movements were really good, such as the points where we have extreme close ups of her lips. Etc. And overall, we do feel our lip syncing was also very good.

By this our classmates meant that they would have liked to have seen more shots of her in other places, more shots of her singing, and more studio shots. The reason we didn’t do this was we wanted to keep completely with our brand image and we felt the best place to do this would be on location, however it would have been more effective with some studio shots probably.

Q6. Do you think choosing a female for the video was best for the video?

Everyone answered yes to this question and once again we got some good answers on why they thought choosing a female for our artist was the best option. They all thought the video would have looked silly with a male artist and would have been no where near as good. However, one thing which was said whilst discussing the answers of our questionnaire in a group was that maybe if we were to use a male then we could have used him briefly as a little character in the video, symbolizing the man who broke our artists heart, which while in the planning stages for our music video we did think about this but thought it would have been more effective with just a female, following music video conventions of our genre of the singer/song writer, such as Adele’s videos.

“Yes get a better emotional response from the audience.”

“Yes, because a female artist sings this song.”

“Yes, it suited the style of the song.”

Overall, after receiving all our audience feedback we were very happy with the answers we got and also with how honest our classmates were even whilst giving criticism because this is always helpful. We got good and bad feedback but overall the music video seemed to please our audience and they completely understood the genre and brand image we were aiming for. Therefore even with some negative answers at times we are very pleased with what we have produced.
