1245 Tibetan hand fashioned religious or ceremonial blackened gong on wooden stand with double dragon carving at top, height 71cm, the dragons with a hint of the original pigment, the original hooks and twine suspension missing and replaced with modern materials otherwise complete with striker, a rare relic from the days before the Chinese annexation when the country was still shrouded in mystery and largely unknown to the outside worldThis unusual item was discovered wrapped in old hessian in a shed of a suburban house which was bought in the late 1950s. The original owners are believed to have brought the gong back from Tibet perhaps as late as 1949-50 when the Chinese occupation closed the borders to foreigners, or (more likely) during the 1930s when European research exploration and travel was still happening on a very limited basis.
