Stan Patten joined West Torrens from the Cornwall Football Club in 1913 and was a prominent ruckman before and after the Great War. He also played for Torrens in the patriotic competition between 1916 and 1918 when the SAFL went into recess owing to the war. In 1918 he captain-coached the side to a premiership when they defeated West Adelaide. Upon resumption of the SAFL competition in 1919 he captained the team under his former team mate Bert Filsell, and the pair spent three years together in these roles, laying the foundations for the team’s fi rst SAFL premiership (West Torrens defeated Sturt 9.12.66 to 8.10.58 in the 1924 Grand Final). 1389 “Asia”, hand-coloured engraved map c.1800-1803 showing Russia from the Volga to Kamchatka, central and southern Asia from Turkey to the Orient and the Indian Ocean from Madagascar to New Guinea, but the main interest is that of New Holland with geographic nomenclature of the time showing Whits Land and Edels Land in the west and New South Wales in the east plus several coastal features, some foxing which does not detract, framed and glazed, printed area 210x180mm, a nice map of the Asian/Indian Ocean region with signifi cant Australian historic interest, drawn at a time when the continental shape of Australia was still not fully known

Van Diemen’s Land is shown separated from the mainland by ‘Basses Strait’ putting the date to c.1800 but the southern coastline between today’s Esperance in the west and Wilson’s Promontory in the east appears only as a straight line without any features other than Western Port Bay which is only very slightly indicated as an indentation (without Philip or French Islands) and Port Phillip Bay not shown at all, so presumably drawn before the discoveries made by Matthew Flinders and Baudin during their respective voyages of 1802-1803 became known to the world Est. $125
