SKYWALK see ad inside back coverSKYWALK 360º Auckland’s urban adventure will literally put you on the edge as you step outside to walk around the outside ring of the spectacular Sky Tower – the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere. Suspended high above Auckland City on a narrow 1.2m platform, there is only a harness between you and a sheer 192m drop on either side! Unlike other Tower walks, there is no protective railing or balcony – each walker is harnessed to an overhead railing to prevent them swinging off the edge. Daredevil walkers who take up the SkyWalk® challenge will enjoy spectacular views of Auckland’s skyline and harbour, while a guide points out the city’s famous landmarks. SkyWalk® costs NZ $145. Charming colonial-style shops and great restaurants make Parnell a popular attraction
The atmosphere and character of Parnell Village make it a great shopping spot. Many of the boutique shops specialise in locally made arts and crafts, ranging from designer jewellery, pounamu (NZ jade) and clothing to paintings, glass-work and sculpture.
• Relax over brunch at one of the many cafes on Parnell Road, then explore some of the designer shops and art galleries.
• Stroll around Parnell’s beautiful rose gardens, where some 5000 rose bushes grow in formal beds (October to April is the best time to view the stunning blooms). Several varieties have been bred locally by New Zealand’s internationally renowned rose-breeders.

Auckland Motorbike hire
For detailed information on the New Zealand road code, the offi cial guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations.
Road RulesYou must be 21 to hire a rental car or mobile home, and show a current driving licence and/or an international licence. New Zealand drives on the left so remember to keep left at all times. All traffi c turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads, T-intersections and driveways where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a car to wear a seatbelt at all times while mobile. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffi c on your right. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffi c laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.
Tips for Safe Driving• Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care
not to exceed the signed speed limits as fi nes can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor.
• If you notice traffi c building up behind you, pull over at a rest area to let it pass. Be extra careful when rejoining traffi c.
• Winding roads, diffi cult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200-300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions.
• Ensure you are at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front.• Ringing bells and fl ashing red lights at a railway crossing signal
that a train is coming. Many railway crossings are not controlled by barrier arms. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care.

The Auckland International and Domestic Airport lies about 21km south-west of the Auckland CBD at the edge of the Manukau Harbour in Mangere.
Airport TransportTravel options to and from Auckland Airport (phone 275 0789) include taxi, shuttle bus and The Airbus, as well as rental vehicles (see page 79-84) which may be picked up/dropped off at the airport or nearby.
