ICOA and Aarhus University is proud to host this year’s annual Performance Management Association Conference 2014. Orga-nization Design and Performance Management are core topics of ICOA’s research.
Most activities in modern society are related to organizations. It is therefore of paramount importance for individuals and society to be able to understand organizations, measure their performance, and to design organizations and their dynamics. The complexity of the world due to rapid development of new technologies, change in demographics, economic complexities, and scarcity of resources makes it very difficult to assure that an organiza-tion is optimized according to framework conditions, goals and utilization of resources. When an organization is not optimized, society, individuals, the organization itself, and organizational stakeholders all experience loss.
As such, the core activity of ICOA is to carry out research on how to analyze, design and redesign private and public organizati-ons in order to secure their ability to excel both now and in the future. More specifically, ICOA researchers focus on how to de-sign robust integration and alignment of people, processes and functional areas to achieve optimal organizational innovation and performance.
ICOA is an interdisciplinary center in partnership with individuals, Aarhus University research groups, the Danish cross-ministerial innovation unit MINDLab, and a broad range of international uni-versities and scholars. The center supports the implementation of Aarhus University ideas of inter-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary research in close cooperation with businesses, and society at large. As such, our research approach is both interdisciplinary and inte-grative, and is executed in close collaboration with organizations.
We thank you for visiting Aarhus and hope you will enjoy the conference.
Best wishes,
Børge obelProfessor, Centre DirectorJune 2014
designing organizations for the future
The center strives to be world leading within the field of organizational architecture. In close dialogue with relevent stakeholders, ICOA will renew organizational theory, de-sign, and create concrete implements for business, public organizations and society.

Aarhus is a dynamic and compact city with a city population of approximately 315,000 and 1.2 million in greater Aarhus. Aarhus is a business hub, a cultural center, and an exceptional holiday destination for families.
Arguably the oldest permanent settlement in Denmark, Aarhus is home to such attractions as ARoS, a renowned art museum; Den Gamle By, an open air museum set in the era of Hans Christian Andersen; and the Moesgaard Musuem – a Viking-era themed museum that is home to perhaps the world’s most famous bog man, the Grauballe Man.
At the same time, Aarhus is Denmark’s youngest city, being home to more than 40,000 university students. Families will find long stretches of publicly accessible Baltic coastline, Tivoli Friheden amusement park and gardens, and Marselisborg Palace – the summer home of Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, who attended both Aarhus University and the University of Cambridge.
Numerous other attractions uncluding Legoland are in or near Aarhus. Participants may select from airports located in Aarhus, Billund, Copenhagen, or Aalborg, all of which have convenient connections into Aarhus Centrum by rail or bus.

usasaarhus UniversityAarhus University was established in 1928 as a small private ini-tiative. It has since grown to become a leading public research university with international reach covering the entire research spectrum. The university offers unique opportunities to conduct research in an environment that promotes creativity and auto-nomy, and where interdisciplinary collaboration is a natural part of all research activities.
The buildings and the University ParkThe buildings of The University of Aarhus are located within and fringing the University Park, which has expanded somewhat over the years. The first building to be finished in 1933 stands on a projecting promontory on the eastern edge of the natural hol-low, and today houses a number of the Social Science subjects.
With only slight modifications, the architectural style in the Univer-sity Park has been sustained since the time when the architects Kay Fisker, C F Møller and Povl Stegmann won the architecture competition launched in 1931. Since 1939 C F Møller’s has been re-sponsible for building projects. The harmonious balance between the undulating park and the homogeneous style of building crea-tes a beautiful campus that has achieved international renown.
The characteristic yellow-brick buildings in the University Park have a total floor area of 246,000 square metres. In addition to this, the university occupies a number of buildings outside of the park with a further floor area of 59,000 square metres.
A new building housing five lecture theatres was opened in 2001. The walls and ceilings inside the building feature a major painting by the artist Per Kirkeby.
aarhus City HallThe conference opening reception will be held at Aarhus City Hall. Aarhus City Hall was inaugurated 2 June 1941, and it was drawn by architects Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller. The decision to build a city hall was taken during a city hall meeting in 1937. As one of just a few Danish city halls it was marked for preservation in March 1994 because of its unique architecture.
On the first proposal the plans did not include a tower but due to massive public pressure it was later added to the drawings. In January 2006 the city hall was included in the Danish Culture Kanon under architecture.
aroSThe conference dinner will be held at ARoS. ARoS is a 5 star museum and is the main art museum in Aarhus and one of the largest museums in Northern Europe. On the roof of ARoS you can also visit Your rainbow panorama from here you can move around in a 150 metre long, circular panoramic path with 360º views of the surrounding city.
In the downstairs area you can enjoy the major special exhibitions, with the ’The 9 Spaces’ presenting international art installations. On the upper floors house the museum’s own collections of art from the 19th century up to the present day.
The sculpture ”Boy” by the australian artist Ron Mueck, is the symbol of ARoS Aarhus Museum of Art. The five metres tall and 500 kg heavy impressive Boy is crouching in the northern end of the foyer of special exhibitions.
