Update from the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents and Carers,
I’m extremely proud of our Atwell school
choir. On Tuesday 20th March they per-
formed for Her Excellency the Honoura-
ble Kerry Sanderson, Governor of West-
ern Australia at the Government House
Ballroom. Ms Ewers and our 55 singers
were amazing. The singing sounded
wonderful, particularly with the ballroom
acoustics, with every dignitary and guest
warmly acknowledging our group of
young students. They even got to have
afternoon tea and a group photo with
the Governor after the event. This is the
first time I have had the pleasure of ac-
companying a school choir to Govern-
ment House and I’m glad it was with
Atwell. It was a special experience for
everyone, which we won’t forget. Well
done and thank you Ms Cook ,Ms Ewers
and our sensational Atwell Choir!
Tuesday was a big day because we also
celebrated Harmony Day at our school
assembly. LA 8, Year 2 did a terrific job
reminding us of the importance of the
day and gave us tips on how we should
all get along with one another. It was
great to see the class and others wear-
ing orange –the harmony colour.
Talking with our School: Relationships
A strong relationship between the home
and the school plays a very important
part in your child’s education.
We can not overestimate the critical role
parents play in successful learning: par-
ents contribute greatly to their child’s
development and are among the most
important influences in the way in which
the child approaches learning.
Teachers are responsible for the more
formal aspects of children’s learning,
and successful teaching builds on the
home experiences of the child. This is
most effective where there is an active
partnership with parents.
Two-way communication is a critical fac-
tor in the partnership between parents
and the school. Where a partnership
exists, it is easier for parents to feel confi-
dent about the teaching and learning
taking place in the classroom and to
resolve problems that may emerge.
A new pamphlet created for Atwell par-
ents and carers to assist them with infor-
mation when talking to the school is now
available on the school’s web page, or
you can pick up a hard copy from the
office.

Today’s assembly was presented by Mrs Allpike’s,
LA14 Year 5 class. Congratulations, fantastic as-
sembly item about forces which includes pushes
and pulls. Excellent demonstrations of the different
forces and how they effect the world. These young
scientists explained about force and how it is meas-

Government House Choir Day
On Tuesday the 20th of March, fifty five, year 4,5,6 students from our school choir performed at Govern-
ment House at the Commonwealth Youth Harmony Day. The students sang two songs and delighted
the Governor of Western Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC with their talent.
There were three other extraordinary items on the program, Penrhos String Orchestra, Hampton Senior
High School Gifted and Talented Dance students and Scotch College Pipe Band, who will be playing at
the 2018 Edinburgh Tattoo.
Atwell Primary School Choir students made us all proud, they were focused, well behaved and coped
so professionally with the venue and the situation. A great credit to all the hard work Mrs Cook has
achieved with the choir over the years and a joy for me to work with.
Congratulations Atwell Choir, this is just the beginning of the year!
Lots more “shimmy’s” to come!
Grateful thanks to all staff for their support.

Halogen Young Leaders Day 2018
On Friday March 9, the school leadership team – Faction Captains and Student Councillors – as
well as Mr Jones and Mr Smith attended the 2018 Halogen Young Leader’s Day held at the
Perth Convention Centre. There was an exciting line up of speakers including John Coutis who
was just inspirational, Dr Fiona Wood an amazing person with incredible goals, Andrew Embley
former Eagles Vice Captain and Rick Ardon Channel Seven News reader . They spoke to us
about leadership and the impact it has had on their lives. They also emphasised the important
aspects of leadership and how we can contribute to the success of an activity through individu-
al or team leadership. Self- belief, ambition, energy, effort and enthusiasm are all key aspects to
achieving goals. It was an exciting day including the train trip, enjoyed by all.
Dogs On Grounds
A friendly reminder that dogs are not permitted on school grounds. We would

Positive Parenting Program
Last week we hosted a Triple P seminar presented by our School Community Health Nurse, Karen
and her colleague Maron from the Department of Health WA. We had a room full of parents who
were eager to hear about the positive approach to parenting. The seminar acknowledges that at
times being a parent can be demanding and exhausting but it also recognised the great work
parents already do. Triple P is a
well researched program that has
been developed to support par-
ents in guiding their children to be-
come happy, healthy and confi-
dent individuals. Thank you to all of
the parents who attended as well
as our Community Health Nurses.
We are hoping to offer the Triple
P workshops and if you are interest-
ed please feel free to contact the
front office for more details.

Nature
Hot air rises!
It’s a law of nature from the beginning of time “stuff” has happened to people, bad things happen to
good people, bad things happen to bad people, same as good stuff happens to both good and bad
people.
Nature sometimes put on a storm or phenomenon that doesn’t work well with our infrastructure, as people,
we have given too much faith in our technology and government. We have become accustomed to our
happiness being tied to our clothing, food, suburb or belongings.
Once upon a time we used to be ready or expectant for “stuff” to happen. Often our painful emotion
from the event is not necessarily due to the event but our perception it shouldn’t have happened in the
first place. We used to know that storms would come but we would get through with the help of family
and friends.
I’m not sure when or where we started thinking these adverse events are no longer applicable.
Maybe we could go back to the basics, where we accept that adversity is going to come in one form or
another - our thinking needs to align with that of an overcomer, as we do get through each situation, be-
cause to-date you have a 100% success rate of coming out the other side or at least working through it.
If we could change our thinking from nothing will happen because we live in the 21st century to well “stuff”
does happen so let’s prepare for it so when or if it comes we are not taken off guard and fall into a seem-
ingly endless pit of despair.
So come join me on this amazing adventure called life.
Till next time
Shayne
