ON TRACK

Riders know that the best way to get the most out of ATVing is to join a club.

There are hundreds of clubs across the nation, ranging from small groups of riding buddies who band together for weekend jaunts, to clubs with hundreds of members who ride, to those who do volunteer trail maintenance and construction work, to riders who raise funds for charity and more.

Something all these club members have in common is the camaraderie that comes with sharing a special bond as a member of a club. When people talk about their clubs, they usually speak of them in terms of “family.”

If you’re not a member of a local ATV club, consider joining one. If there’s no club in your area, consider forming one!

And if you already belong to a club, but that club isn’t chartered with the ATVA or AMA, consider getting chartered. It’s easy to do, and there are major advantages. Here are several:

ATVA- and AMA-chartered clubs are the gold standard. The best clubs in the nation are chartered with the ATVA and AMA. Riders and others know that an ATVA- or AMA-chartered club is well-organized, family-friendly and an asset to the community. There is prestige in being chartered with the ATVA or AMA and in being part of a greater community of ATV riders and motorcyclists: ATVA and AMA members nationwide.

Protect your right to ride and race. By chartering with the ATVA or AMA, you are helping protect ATVing now and in the future. The ATVA and AMA have dedicated government relations staff hard at work every day fighting threats to ATV riding. Also, clubs are an integral part of social activity that provides the foundation for the political and community activities that will help ensure the future of ATV riding.

Increase your membership. Growing your ATV club can be tough, often because it’s hard to find and reach other ATVers. For individual riders, finding a club nearby can be equally difficult. The ATVA helps bring enthusiasts together. By chartering your club with the ATVA or AMA, the club status is acknowledged on the ATVA and AMA websites (ATVAonline.com and AmericanMotorcyclist.com), and stories can appear in ATVA News, which can lead to increased membership.

Get organizational help. From creating club bylaws to incorporating to getting liability insurance for events to organizing races, rides and rallies, the ATVA and AMA are ready to help. Sanctioning both recreational and competition events nationwide, the AMA provides a uniform set of rules covering many types of riding activities. No other No. 1 plate has more prestige than the one earned in an ATVA or AMA event.

Tap into a full range of services. The combined AMA and ATVA remains the only national organization devoted to providing a full range of services. More than 225,000 motorcycle and ATV enthusiasts support ATVA and AMA activities through their annual membership dues.

Affordable event insurance and free publicity. Clubs can sanction off-road poker runs or trail rides and get affordable liability insurance. When your club sanctions an ATVA event, we’ll list your event both in ATVA News and in the monthly American Motorcyclist magazine, giving ATVers across the country information about your events. This allows you to boost attendance and potentially brings in new club members.

Your voice is heard. The ATVA and AMA are assisted by the AMA Congress. ATV and motorcycle enthusiasts from around the country attend this annual Congress meeting to establish and define rules for sanctioned events. Each ATVA- and AMA-chartered promoting organizer has the privilege of voting for Congress delegates, providing a say in how the ATVA and AMA function.

So, how can your club join the ATVA?First, consider whether your club

should be chartered with the ATVA as a Social Club, Recreational Promoting Club or Promoting Competition Club.

Social Clubs are just that: social organizations that don’t plan or organized events but want to show their support for the ATVA. You need five club members who are also currently members of the ATVA or AMA. We’ll provide you with new member applications along with your social club

application, allowing you to sign up as many new members as you’d like. The annual Social Club charter fee is $25.

Promoting Recreational Clubs host trail rides, off-road poker runs or field meets. Event participants aren’t required to be ATVA members. Recreational clubs must have at least 10 members who are current members of the ATVA or AMA, one of whom is designated as a risk management officer. Also, at least one member of your club must review an ATVA/AMA risk-management seminar online before conducting sanctioned events. The annual charter fee for a Recreational Club is $50.

Promoting Competition Clubs, or promoting clubs, host races like motocross, hare scrambles, TTs, dirt track or ice races. Racers must be ATVA or AMA members. Competition clubs must have at least 10 current ATVA or AMA members, one of whom is designated as a risk management officer. Also, at least one member of your club must review an ATVA/AMA risk-management seminar online before conducting sanctioned events. The annual charter fee for a Competition Club is $100.

Visit AmericanMotorcyclist.com > Clubs & Promoters > Start A Club to download all the forms you need to get started.

We’ve heard some good things about the organization Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Off Road so we contacted PWD President Darin Frye to find out more. Here’s what he had to say.

ATVA News: What is PWD?Darin Frye: Persons with Disabilities

(PWD) Off Road is a non-profit organization helping persons with various disabilities enjoy off-roading through the coordination of events that provide the proper accommodations and a caring atmosphere.

This organization is not restricted to persons with disabilities or families of persons with disabilities, but is open to all individuals and families that wish to promote and represent a just cause. Like many other clubs, PWD is about safe, legal riding. The difference is, we are willing to sacrifice a few miles on the trails for a few smiles from those who have a disability.

AN: Where are you based?DF: The main office is in Montville,

Ohio. We are a national organization that is open to all persons, clubs and organizations.

AN: When did you start PWD and why?DF: PWD was an idea in my head for

some time. My best friend, Greg Fronk, pushed me to get this started in late summer of 2011. The reason? My son, DJ,

has severe autism and is very limited in the things he can do and really enjoy in life. His favorite thing to do is ride ATVs and be in the great outdoors. I wanted him to be a part of something and help others along the way.

Our main mission is to bring people together to share the trails, while educating about various disabilities and advocating/supporting those with disabilities. There are many families out there that have an interest in ATV adventures but need help to get involved. We want to be able to help people become active in this hobby and we can offer ideas and solutions to do so.

AN: What challenges do you face?DF: The biggest challenge has been

getting our mission and word out there so people understand what we are and what we are trying to achieve.

AN: What’s planned for 2012?DF: We have many events and rides

planned for 2012.Our biggest event, PWD Spring Bash

presented by Lucas Oil, was held April 12-15 at Ride Royal Blue in honor of Autism Awareness Month.

We’ll also ride at the June 15-17 Thrills in the Hills event at the Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park in Sophia, W.Va., and other events.

AN: What are your goals?DF: Our long-term goal is to promote

this hobby to anyone and everyone who has an interest and wishes to be part of an organization that will go to great lengths to help and encourage a caring atmosphere.

We would also like to see our membership and member participation increase across the country. We will promote these goals by continually scheduling events and rides in which we are actively riding and promoting our mission. One of our main goals in creating this organization was to put miles on our quads while enjoying the fellowship of others.

AN: How can people get involved?DF: Contact me at www.facebook.com/

Washington State Riders Want Money Returned$9.5 Million Involved

A lawsuit to get $9.5 million returned to Washington state’s Non-highway and Off-road Vehicle Activities (NOVA) account will be heard by the state Supreme Court.

The lawsuit was filed by the Washington Off Highway Vehicle Alliance (WOHVA) and the Northwest Motorcycle Association (NMA) after officials transferred the money from the NOVA account to the Washington State Parks department. None of the money was used for off-highway recreation.

In 2009, the Legislature approved the transfer, even though the NOVA account money comes from the gas tax paid by off-highway vehicle (OHV) users and the license tab fees on OHVs.

The money is normally distributed to benefit OHV recreation through grants.

The WOHVA and NMA say in their suit that if the $9.5 million isn’t returned to the taxpayers who paid it, then “families and their children throughout the state of Washington will lose the healthy

outdoor recreational opportunities they were promised and for which they paid their taxes and ORV [off-road vehicle] tab fees, as the trails they have enjoyed together are closed.”

Idaho ATV Clubs Pitch In To Clean TrailsPopular Riding Area Near Emmitt Benefits From The Volunteer Work

A tip of the helmet goes to Idaho ATV club members who gave up a day of riding in March to help clean up one of their favorite riding areas: Willow Creek north of Emmett.

Some 50 ATV riders from clubs in Ada, Gem and Canyon counties pitched in to pick up trash, aluminum cans and old tires on federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property.

The cleanup marked the third year that ATV club members have helped maintain the recreational area.

Terry Humphrey, Four Rivers Field Office manager, notes: “We want to recognize and thank all of the folks who volunteered their time and efforts for this clean up.

“This demonstration of shared, good stewardship will inspire many others to care for their public lands,” he says.

New York ATVers Donate Trail Passes To SoldiersFort Drum Riders Get The Permits

The Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association in New York wanted to say “thank you” to the soldiers in Jefferson County at Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division.

So the association, made up of six ATV clubs, donated 20 ATV passes for use at the Lewis County Tug Hill trail system.

The Lewis County Chamber of Commerce, which sells the passes for the county, donated another permit after learning that Fort Drum has 21 ATVs for soldiers to use.

Fort Drum primarily has Honda Rubicon ATVs that it allows soldiers and family members to use, provided they have completed ATV safety training. Officials believe having the permits will make it much easier to plan ATV events.

Besides saying “thanks” to the soldiers with the permits and introducing the soldiers to the Tug Hill trails, Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association officials believe this will also help local businesses by encouraging new visitors.

For more information on the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association, go to TugHillAdirondacksATV.com.

Longtime ATV Rights Advocate Adena Cook Passes AwayWidely Praised For Her Efforts Adena Cook, a longtime advocate for off-highway vehicle (OHV) riders’ rights, died on April 5. Cook was among those who helped AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Clark Collins build the BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC) into a national force in battles for OHV riders’ rights. “Adena was absolutely crucial to the BlueRibbon Coalition’s evolution as a nationally recognized recreation advocacy group,” Collins says. “Her hard work and dedication was an inspiration to me personally and to grassroots recreation access activists across the nation. No one has had more of a positive impact on back-country recreation than Adena.”

Court Closes Trails42 Routes In California Affected A U.S. District Court judge has ordered officials at the Eldorado National Forest in California to conduct an environmental analysis, which will close 42 off-highway vehicle (OHV) routes through this year’s riding season. The affected routes include the Barrett Lake Jeep Trail, Clover Valley/Deer Valley Trail and the Squaw Ridge Four-Wheel Drive Trail. A map and complete listing is available at FS.USDA.gov/Eldorado. In February, U.S. District Judge Lawrence Karlton ordered the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to conduct an environmental analysis after finding that the USFS failed to follow the National Forest Management Act when it designated the routes as open for motor vehicle use.

With two rounds complete in the 2012 AMA ATV Motocross National Championship Series, defending champion John Natalie is happy with his results so far.

But the Motoworks/Can-Am rider knows that the season has just started, and he’s squaring off against the best ATV motocross racers on the planet.

We caught up with Natalie just before the third round of the AMA ATV Motocross National Championship Series at Budds Creek in Mechanicsville, Md., to talk about his 2011 championship and look ahead to the rest of this year.

ATVA News: Congratulations on winning the 2011 Pro title in the AMA ATV Motocross Championship Series. You and Josh Upperman took the battle down to the wire and may do that again this year.

John Natalie: Thank you! Winning this championship means a lot to me. Our whole team has been working hard for this and had to work even harder when I broke my arm the week of the Ohio race, but I knew if we still wanted a shot at the championship I had to race.

Josh is a great racer and he always is a strong finisher so I knew it would come down to Loretta’s. Going into Loretta’s, I was very confident that we could win, until I ended up crashing in the holeshot and was a half a track down.

I knew where I needed to be to still be in the points lead so I buried my head and put in some work on the track, finishing a strong fourth.

AN: Now that the 2012 season is in full swing, what do you

need to do to defend your title? JN: This year I’m going to defend my title by stepping up

my training. I have been working really hard and want this championship as bad as I wanted it in 2011. I’m going to do what it takes to put our Can-Am DWT/Motoworks bike on top again! Joel [Hetrick] and Josh [Upperman] are my biggest competitors and I know they will be strong so it’s my plan to be stronger.

AN: You and the Motoworks/Can-Am team really clicked in

2011 and you’re off to a good start in 2012.JN: We have definitely been off to a great start in 2012,

finishing on the box for the first two rounds. In round three, look for me to be on the top of the box.

Having a teammate like Joel makes the tent that much better. With his feedback, and mine, we are sure to always be where we need to be with bike set up. Joel and I have been friends a long time and I am very thrilled that he is my teammate. We work well together on and off the track.

AN: How long have you been racing the Can-Am DS 450?JN: This will be my fifth year on the DS. It’s definitely gotten

better. We learn new things all the time while racing.Unlike the other companies, Can-Am engineers are at the

races and work with the riders. They use the info to make their bikes better. The best bikes, the best contingency, why buy anything else? Support the company that supports us!

AN: You won the AMA ATV MX national No. 1 plate in 2005 and

repeated in 2011. What motivated you during that dry spell? JN: I love competition, for one. I also love the fans and all the

people who support and believe in me. And I wanted to win for Can-Am. They really deserved it.

AN: Tell us a little about your personal life.

Joel Hetrick, a new member of the Motoworks/Can-Am ATV motocross team, is only 19 years old but he has a race resume that stretches back 14 years.

The Seneca, Pa., resident also is teamed up with defending champion John Natalie in the AMA ATV MX series this year.

Hetrick started his racing career aboard a Suzuki QuadSport LT80 as a child, and raced everything from 70 Mods to 400s.

He then raced Pro-Am his first year out of the youth classes, and won an AMA ATV Motocross National Championship Series Pro-Am Unlimited title in his second year: 2010.

In 2011, he went pro, winning the final event at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., and finishing fifth in the series.

Impressed, the Motoworks/Can-Am team snapped him up.“Being a part of the Motoworks/Can-Am team is great,” Hetrick

says of this year. “I get along with everyone on the team very well. Working with the factory team has shown me how much team work is important to win.

“It has also shown me how to cooperate well with others,” he says. “As a young rider, I have always had a lot of respect for John [Natalie]. To have him as a teammate is an honor.”

Hetrick knows from experience that the competition is tough in the pro ranks. His goals for this season are to stay consistent, win some races and finish in the top three at the end of the season.

And he believes he has the machine to do it.“The Can-Am DS 450 is a great bike,” Hetrick says. “The first

day I got on it I felt awesome. I couldn’t be any happier with the DS 450. It’s very easy for me to move around and it is the best-handling bike I have ever ridden.”

While there are a variety of ATV racing series that Hetrick could compete in, he likes the environment of the AMA ATV Motocross National Championship Series.

“Everyone at the track is always nice and it’s just fun to be there,” he says.

When he’s not out roosting on the MX track or training, Hetrick likes to snowboard, ride his mountain bike or BMX bike and play with his remote-control car. Plus, he hangs out with his friends and girlfriend.

Hetrick is sponsored by Motoworks/Can-Am, his mom and dad, K&N, Fox Racing Shox, Hinson, Makson Construction, DWT tires, Holz, Renthal, Streamline, Precision, Motul, SSI Decals, Pro Armor, Quad Tech, Tireballs, Maximum RPM, Bell Helmets, Fly, World of Wheels, Hetrick Racing (www.HetrickATVRacing.com) and CV4.

For info on the AMA ATV MX series, go to ATVMotocross.com.

Joel Hetrick A Hard Charger On The MX Scene

JN: My wife, Michelle, and I live in Warriors Mark, Pa. We are building our home this year with Bruce Cox, which is exciting. I am 36 years young and have been racing for 20 years.

Michelle and I have been married for almost six years and we have a beautiful 2-year-old daughter. It’s been pretty easy with raising her and racing since we all travel together.

AN: What do you do in your free time? JN: During the summer we like to go to the lake and

relax on our boat, go horseback riding and enjoy time with our daughter. They are starting to show ponies so I’m sure I will get pretty busy with their hobbies!

AN: What do you like about the MX series?JN: The family atmosphere and how it kept me

out of trouble growing up. And I really love the fans. Interacting with the fans is what I love to do. When I see all of my fans cheering me on around the track, it means the world to me.

AN: How long will you keep racing?JN: I plan on racing as long as my body and team

will allow me. I have many championships left to go get. There is a lot of young talent out there, like Duck Lloyd and Lane Baird—all the kids of motocross are our future!

AN: Who are your sponsors?JN: Can-Am / BRP, DWT, Motoworks, Johnny Leach,

Casey Greek, SSi Decal, Can-Am racing gear, Hinson, Pro Armor, Holz, Motul, Scott goggles, Arai helmets, Fox Racing Shox, my wife Michelle, daughter and my mom and dad.

AN: What advice would you give a young rider who

wants to be a national champion like you?JN: Stay in school, work hard, never give up and

never quit. AN: Is there anything else you would like to add?JN: I want to thank my beautiful wife, Michelle, and

daughter for always standing beside me. I want to thank my mom and dad for being there for me and I wouldn’t be here without them.

I want to thank my buddy, Mark, for all his help and all my friends around Houtzdale, Pa., and all my fans for standing behind me and believing in me.

Sophia, West Virginia

WHERE TO R IDE

The 8,000-acre Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park near Sophia, W. Va., is a genuine adventure park, with more than 100 miles of trails, a dual-racing zipline, guided ATV tours, rental cabins and more.

And officials of the park say things are only going to get better.

“We have something for almost everyone to enjoy, whether they ride the trails or not,” says Lisa Gale, Burning Rock’s marketing director. “But looking at off-road riders specifically, they demand new trails and new challenges regularly—that’s what keeps them motivated to keep coming back.

“Our goal is to add 80 miles of new trails to the park this year and at least 50 miles annually thereafter, so stay tuned,” Gale says.

Earlier this year, Burning Rock announced the opening of five new off-road trails, including a connector into the historic coal camp town of Slab Fork.

The addition of these trails brings the park’s total to 74 trails that are a combined 106 miles in length.

Efforts are under way through a partnership with Burning Rock, the Beaver Coal Company that owns the land and the residents of Slab Fork to “breathe new life” into the coal camp town, which was established in 1907. They’ve formed an active community association that focuses on clean up, restoration and community revitalization.

“With this new direct trail access, opportunities exist for the town’s economic growth as a potential trailhead,” says Woody Duba, general manager of the Beaver Coal Company. “Riders coming off the trail system will be curious to explore the town, have a meal somewhere or learn about the local mining history.

“They can even stay overnight in rentals that are being developed from the original homes as they become available, such as Coal Camp Getaways Cottage,” Duba says. “They’ll have direct ‘door to trail’ access.”

Burning Rock plans to continue developing trails in the Slab Fork area as it continues its expansion efforts this year.

The Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park calls itself “a family-fueled, mom-approved, razz-your-buddies, go-big-or-go-home, beginners-always-welcome, muddy-and-proud-of-it way to have good time on a West Virginia vacation in the New River Gorge.”

Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park

8 July/August 2012

Page 9: ATVA News July/August 2012

Among other things, Burning Rock boasts professionally designed trails that are identified with symbols rating them from easy to difficult.

•Green Circle (Easy): Great trails for beginners. These are touring trails, long looping roads with just enough gradient to be exciting. Burning Rock says to expect rocks and mud, but nothing beginners can’t handle.

•Blue Square (Medium): These trails are for riders who want to step it up a little. The gradient can vary greatly, and you can expect bigger rocks and obstacles for longer distances compared to the easy trails, with steep sections scattered throughout.

•Black Diamond (Difficult): These trails are for experts. Burning Rock says that some people call them steep, “but around here we call them ‘straight down.’” These trails feature big boulders and sharp drop offs.

Trails are two-way traffic unless otherwise marked. You can take guided tours, although those tours don’t go on the Black Diamond trails.

Besides great trails, Burning Rock has a variety of other activities to enjoy, including whitewater rafting, rock climbing, exhibition coal mine tours, skiing, tubing and the zipline.

Or, more specifically, the half-mile-long Burning Rock Express Racing Zipline.

Burning Rock says the Express “is a rocket of a twin zipline system that picks up so much speed the ground below you will blur. Honest.”

The Express is a dual-racing zipline, which means you can race your friends side by side. It’s 2,500 feet long, has a 300-foot descent, which is equivalent to a 30-story building, and riders hit speeds of 60 mph. Riders must weigh between 70 and 250 pounds.

Burning Rock also has ample trailer parking, a campground with tent and full-hookup RV sites, cabins, showers and restrooms and a general store.

Every rider needs a permit, which is issued as a sticker that goes on your helmet. Riders on guided trips at Burning Rock have permit fees included in the price.

Permits can be picked up at the Burning Rock General Store, which is open every day except Christmas Day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The permit prices before tax is added are:

•Yearly, in-state resident, $35•Yearly, out-of-state resident, $60•One-day, $20•Three-to-seven day, $35 (Must be used on

consecutive days.)•Yearly in-state family package, $70•Yearly out-of-state family package, $120(Family packages include permits for three people.

There is a $10 charge for each additional person. All participants in a family package must have identifications that show the same address.)

There are a variety of rules that guests need to follow at Burning Rock to make the experience enjoyable for everyone. They include:

•All trail users must have a valid Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park permit.

•All trail users must wear a DOT- or DOT/Snell-approved helmet and protective eyewear.

•No passengers on any vehicle not manufactured specifically for an operator and passenger.

•No vehicle of over 64 inches in width is allowed on the property.

•No alcoholic beverages may be consumed or carried on trails.

•Obey all signs, gates, and barriers.•Only enter and exit the trail system at the Burning

Rock trailhead.•Don’t enter a “no trail,” no entry area or gated area.•Ride at a speed reasonable for conditions.•No person shall operate an ATV unless that person

meets the minimum age recommendation specified by the ATV manufacturer for the ATV being operated.

•ATVs and motorcycles must have a properly functioning muffler and USFS-approved spark arrester.

•Stop when signaled by trail personnel.•Carry photo identification at all times.•Adult supervision is required for those under the

age of 16.•Do not litter.•Display the user permit on your person at all times.•The trail system is open from sunrise to sunset 365

days a year.•No weapons or sidearms.

To get to the Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park:

From the South or the East: Take I-77 North or I-64 West (the West Virginia Turnpike, a toll road) to Beckley. They merge to become the same road just before you reach Beckley. Take Exit 42, Robert C. Byrd Drive (16), toward Crab Orchard. Follow Robert C. Byrd Drive (16) to Sophia, where it ends. Turn RIGHT onto W Main Street (16). Drive 3 miles. Chad Wienen

The 2012 AMA ATV Motocross National Championship Series kicked off March 24 at Aonia Pass MX Park in Washington, Ga., providing some of the best racing in series history.

The opener pitted the fastest ATV motocross racers in the country against one another for two 20-plus minute motos. After an eight-month hiatus from racing due to a season-ending injury in 2011, Wienen Motorsports/SSi/Walsh/Yamaha-backed Chad Wienen began the season in a winning fashion, going (1-1) for the overall and the early points lead.

In the opening moto of the Pro ATVMX class, it was Baldwin Motorports/

PEP’s Josh Upperman who grabbed the SSi Decals Holeshot Award

and led the early part of the race. It wasn’t long before

Wienen powered his new Yamaha ride into the

lead, though, passing Upperman through

the fan-filled finish line

section.

While the rest of the field was viewing the track on the site lap, Motoworks/Can-Am’s newest addition, Joel Hetrick, was waiting behind the gate while his crew worked to fix a mechanical issue on the ATV.

Earlier in the day, Hetrick grabbed the ATVRiders.com fastest Qualifier Award over a stacked field of veteran riders, and after finally fixing the ATV in time for the gate drop, Hetrick proved it wasn’t a fluke as he caught and passed the front-runners and pressured Wienen for the lead spot.

Hetrick finally made a bold attempt to pass Wienen for the lead, but in doing so, the 19-year-old went off the track and was forced to sit out the rest of the moto on the sidelines.

Defending champion Motoworks/Can-Am’s John Natalie came through

the pack and spent a majority of the first moto battling with longtime

competitor Upperman for the second-place spot.

Natalie finally got around Upperman in the latter

part of the initial 20 minutes of

racing, and although the

“Ironman” put a late charge on the leader as the two-lap card came out, Natalie wasn’t able to catch Wienen in time for the checkers.

In the second moto, it was once again Upperman’s Honda that took the SSi Decals Holeshot Award, but defending champ Natalie inched his way out front right away, fending off a very driven duo of Wienen and Uppeman.

Pennsylvania’s Derek Swartfager put his Waldo Motorsports-backed Honda inside the top five early in the moto, battling with Thomas Brown on the TBROWN Yamaha powered by Moto-X-Perts machine.

Brown led a tight-pack of riders who were battling for the top five positions, including pro class rookie Mark Madl, the 2011 Pro-Am Production champion and fifth-fastest qualifier for the day.

Meanwhile, Natalie and Wienen fought back and fourth in an intense battle for the lead. Wienen chased Natalie for most of the race, slipping past his former teammate in a few spots, but the most famous line was through the whoop-section and into the final corner before the finish, where Wienen showed his front tires to the leader several times.

On the final lap, Wienen made the move on the defending champ just one

turn before the finish line, giving Wienen the overall win and the points lead after the first round of racing.

“This is definitely a moment for me right now,” Wienen said afterward. “To come back like this and just being able to walk and to come out here and do what I love, this is the greatest moment. We’re taking it one race at a time, super excited to

start the season off with a (1-1) sweep. I’ve been dreaming about this day

(first race back from injury) and it’s finally coming on. This is going to be a story for the books this year.”

Natalie finished out the day with second overall, while Josh Upperman took the final podium position and third place in the

championship points standings.“I didn’t get tired out there at all

today, just a couple issues there on the last lap not being able to shift but we’re going to go back and fix it to be ready for round two,” said Natalie. “I really liked

the track today but I like the rough and tumble bumps, so I’m ready to go to a rougher track where it really separates the men from the boys.”

Upperman said: “I’ve really taken my training program to another level this year and it’s starting to show. It’s boosted my confidence a lot, because I know what I can do now from last year to this year and I’m ready to make it happen.”

Thomas Brown (Yamaha) finished with a (4-5) score to take fourth overall, just ahead of rookie Mark Madl (Honda), who took an impressive fifth overall in his first-ever pro race.

Nick DeNoble (Honda) ended the day in sixth place, ahead of Derek Swartfager (Honda) and Joel Hetrick went (14-4) to salvage an eighth-place finish for the day.

In amateur racing, Merrill Crose won the Junior 25+ Class and placed second in the Veteran 30+ and 450 Junior A

classes.Root River’s Haedyn Mickelson was hot

with a win in Schoolboy Junior.

Chad Wienen Makes it Two in a Row in ATV MXHolds Off Defending Champ John Natalie

Chad Wienen came out victorious at round two of the AMA ATV Motocross National Championship Series at Muddy Creek Raceway in Blountville, Tenn., April 21-22, sweeping both motos and extending his points lead over defending Champion John Natalie in the overall standings.

The ATVRiders.com Fastest Qualifier came from Motoworks/Can-Am’s Joel Hetrick for the second race in a row, as the young Pennsylvania rider showed some of the fastest speeds of the weekend.

ATVMX veteran Harold Goodman shot out to the first moto SSi Decals holeshot. But it was Baldwin Motorsports/PEP’s Josh Upperman who got into the early lead before Natalie moved into the lead by lap three.

Wienen had a mid-pack holeshot but quickly put himself within striking distance of Natalie’s lead and the duo picked up the intense battle right where they left off at round one.

Wienen stalked Natalie until the final lap and, once again, cut underneath the Ironman to steal the last minute lead and first moto victory as the rain started to fall on the Muddy Creek Raceway.

Hetrick got off to a bad start but put his Motoworks/Can-Am into the third spot around lap five and kept a comfortable cushion on Upperman, who finished in fourth. Thomas Brown struggled off the start, but worked his way through the pack on his TBROWN Yamaha powered by Moto-X-Perts, where he maintained a fifth-place finish, just ahead of Lonestar/SSi Decals rider Nick DeNoble.

In the second moto, Wienen took control early-on, while Natalie settled into a close second. That’s how they finished.

Hetrick started off in fifth place but passed his way into the third spot, gunning for the leaders that were less than four seconds away throughout the entire race. Wienen went on to secure his second straight win of the season, while Natalie and Hetrick grabbed the other two podium positions.

“The new Yamaha is awesome, I’m starting to get more comfortable on it and

especially in the mud today, I feel like I barely even rode the thing!” Wienen said. “It’s crazy to think that nine months ago I was laid up in bed and, after a lot of hard work and determination, we’ve gotten to where we’re at.

“And I’m just having fun and paying my dues, taking it one race at a time,” Wienen added.

Although Upperman claimed the SSi Decals Holeshot Award, the Honda rider settled into fourth and maintained that position for the rest of the second moto, going 4-4 for fourth overall for the day.

Thomas Brown (YAM) finished with a 5-6 score to take fifth overall, just ahead of Joe Byrd (HON), who took home sixth overall. Nick DeNoble (HON) ended the day with seventh place, ahead of Derek Swartfager (HON), while rookie Mark Madl (HON) took ninth and Harold Goodman (HON) rounded out the top 10.
