all places are in facts a layering



We cannot

preserve places without giving any new input;

deny the ongoing process of time flowing;

rely only on memories;

deny memories.



memories as a thick wall in opposition to the flowing of time


if the continuous flowing of time doesn’t find a

way to penetrate them or to build on them, those walls will in the

end be torn down and destroyed,

losing them and the identity of

place


in these processes, we have to learn which place and how much room should be given to memorieshow to deal with them, in order to take well shaped decisions a powerful example of how we can deal with memories comes from a function that we all share:

Dreaming

there is a general consensus that dreams have to do with the elaboration of memories Attracted by the future, conditioned by the past, shaped by our decision … that’s where a place is - S.

although the manifest content of a dream usually appears chaotic,


the oneiric function transforms memories in resources available to individuals and communities, especially those memories that are “difficult” to deal with


although they conform to different schools of thought,

several contemporary scholars (Funkhouser 2015, Hartmann 2012, Ullman 1987, Schinco 2011,Van De Castle 1994)

share a perspective in which they identify, in the “creative core” of the oneiric function, the active presence of “emotional attractors”



they also share the idea of the continuity in the state of consciousness

our creative core is active in dreaming but also in the artistic production and other forms of creativity furthermore, several scholars practicing different disciplines share the claim that our emotions connect us not only to the memories of the past, but to the future also (Damasio 1994, Di Corpo & Vannini 2015, Frankl 1982)



our “creative core” seems to be future-oriented

in the meantime keeps us connected with memoriesit is outfitted to deal with their forces and also with their denied aspects

the tension between memories and the

future not only qualifies the space of dreams

but those of all creative endeavorsAttracted by the future, conditioned by the past, shaped by our decision … that’s where a place is - S.



we are arguing that “space” and “place” are not the same. Since it depends our perception

our movements

our location in diachronic time

a place is something concrete “space”, instead, is a phylosophical and scientific concept



thus, there are many different definitions of space

after our works “Troubled Spaces” (Schinco M., Schinco S., 2014) and “Spazi Travagliati” (Schinco M., Schinco S., 2015)

we intend “space” with a phenomenological bias (Maldiney, 1991)



a metaphor of the conditions qualifying our experiencethe way persons and their worlds are generated altogether with increasing distinctions and complexity depending on their story

on the destination of the place on the awareness of those who interact with the place itself

more or less visible

in the same physical place different spaces always coexistAttracted by the future, conditioned by the past, shaped by our decision … that’s where a place is - S.



for example:

physical spaceaffections’ space

memories’ spaceprojects’ space

values’ spaceeconomical space

sacred space



all them obey laws of their own and are featured in a peculiar way

nevertheless, they overlap and are interwoven, so to form composed and complex spaces

Gabriel Marcel would call it “the infrahuman fabric”



memories, future and decisions

like our mind does when we dream or when we use our creativity

in order to take well-shaped decisions we should learn

to commend the tension between memories and the future



it is a natural thing to do, since mind works as a continuity, featured by

interaction

fluidity

motion



to commend the tension between memories and the future it is important to qualify the space of decisions in the present:

good exchanges and decisions do not come out of nothing

they require discipline, both within and in the relationships with others



in particular, a good decision needs

a serious perspective about values;

a commitment of one’s feelings to the future;

the capacity of remaining silent and waiting, even for a long time

this is particularly true for what concerns territorial identity processes (cfr. Schinco & Schinco, 2015);

the attitude to communicate frankly but not in a competitive wayAttracted by the future, conditioned by the past, shaped by our decision … that’s where a place is - S.



as a conclusion: we are not proposing razzle-dazzle changes

we just think that we can learn to confront our memories in the frame of being strongly attracted by the future

we claim that this should commend the way we decide and exercise our responsibilities, making use of plenty of our resources, as individuals and as communities as well
