MATTIE STEPANEKMattie was a young boy who became a famous poet at the age of 10.
He was good friends with Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Carter.
Mattie’s first book was titled Heartsongs.
Mattie died in 2004 at the age of 13.
This is the most emotional chapter in the book. While he is an inspirational person, the chapter makes many people cry.

Grading Categories• There are 6 main categories that you will be graded on during your presentations this semester. They are:

1. Eye Contact
• Looking the audience members in the eye• Do not read your notes the whole time• No bobble-head dolls!
2. Volume
• Not too loud or too quiet• Conversational tone• Speak to the corners of the classroom
3. Speed
• Not to fast or too slow• Appropriate pauses between sentences or ideas
4. Articulation
• How clearly you are speaking• Don’t mumble or trail off• Don’t jumble all your words together in a long string!
5. Stance
• No hoods, hats, or backpacks• Don’t fiddle with clothing or hair• Be tall and stand with presence!• Don’t sway or shake your limbs• Hold your notecards low and still
