Attitude of Gratitude

W ith Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, I’m reminded of the most important Jewish value my children learned from attending The Solel Preschool—having an attitude of gratitude. That value begins in the preschool, but is carried throughout all

of the Solel community. We teach our children, and try to model ourselves, that we have a choice in how we see life; to focus on the abundance in our lives, be in a place of gratitude and choose to find potential and opportunity in joyful and difficult times. An attitude of gratitude continues to influence my family. We strive to make this our mantra and find the beauty in every situation.

Following my presidential responsibility of “bimah-sitting” during the High Holidays, many people reached out to me to congratulate me on a job-well-done. While the brevity of my speeches and the behind-the-scenes perspective were absolute highlights, I found my family’s experience most impactful: Sitting with my daughter on the bimah, seeing her beam with pride. Seeing my kids sit with their friends in the congregation, exchanging little smiles and waves throughout the service. The High Holidays can be a marathon, but seeing the connection our children have with us and each other during these times reminds me to be thankful for what promise our community and youth hold for our future.

This fall, we have been running our Annual Campaign. This is an opportunity for everyone in our congregation to demonstrate our gratitude for our community. We ask that everyone participate, because when we see everyone donate, we hear your voices say that you’ve enjoyed the rabbis’ sermons, you’ve been inspired by Todd’s music, or simply that you love the Solel community. It’s a vote of confidence and it matters. Having a financially healthy community is an essential component to our longevity. It enables us to make important safety updates like the fire panel we recently installed, as well as supporting our phenomenal staff.

I invite you to go to templesolel.org and click on the “give now” button or simply call the office to make a donation. In whatever way is comfortable to you, please show your support and gratitude for Solel by giving.

We are the role models for the younger generation—the future leaders of our community. May the appreciation we share around the Thanksgiving table, be echoed with an attitude of gratitude each and every day of the year.

T his month, we celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving. It is a time to be together with family and friends and to appreciate the many gifts we are fortunate to have in our lives. I am a firm believer in the positive power of gratitude to

reshape our perspectives and place our focus on what we have to celebrate rather than on what we lack. However, as this quote from Jim Rohn illustrates, there can be a slight question as to whether gratitude can cause us to become complacent and lose our drive if we are in a constant state of bliss.

Can we be grateful for the blessings in our lives and still be motivated to strive for more? I think the answer here is ‘yes.’ In fact, as we put our focus on the ways in which we have already received, we open up the gates for more receiving. As Oprah Winfrey says: “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.”

The paradox here is that by expressing our gratitude for what we have we signal our subconscious mind that we

are and have more than enough. And this allows us to continue to generate that same kind of positive momentum going forward. By expressing our gratitude,

we experience ourselves as overflowing with blessings and that ends up creating more abundance and joy and success for us. And of course, people around us are drawn to that type of energy as well… which creates even more opportunities to learn and grow and receive. Then we give back in the form of our gratitude and the upward cycle continues.

So, this month and in the months to come, I encourage us all to try to express our gratitude

in as many ways as possible… “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” —William Arthur Ward

In love and gratitude for all the gifts that this community brings,

N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 8 / C h e s h va n - K i s l e v 5 7 7 9 4 The Solel Preschool

N ovember is my favorite time of the year. Fall is here and the weather is beautiful. The crispness of the air is refreshing and comforting. We survived the summer heat. The craziness for the holiday season hasn’t kicked in completely. There are still free evenings and

time to ponder the lessons of the year before we start a new one. Such a lovely time to reflect on friendship, family, and with Thanksgiving approaching, consider all the blessings for which we should be grateful.

November is also the National Month of Gratitude. A Jewish word for gratitude is hakarat hatov—it means to see the good in the world and to be grateful for what you have. Hakarat Hatov is really bigger than gratitude, it’s recognition for the things we have and the people we sometimes take for granted.

Try these five ways to help teach your preschooler about gratitude this month:

1. Model gratitude in your daily life. Say thank you or discuss the good things that happened in your day.

2. Encourage generous acts. Children love to feel helpful, so give them an opportunity by suggesting they donate a toy, food or clothing to another child in need.

3. Say no from time to time. If a child always get a reward, they may begin to learn that life is about endless rewards. They need to understand that rewards are not something to take for granted.

4. Teach children that things aren’t most important in life. With so much advertising this is a hard concept for children to understand. Talk about less tangible things that you’re thankful for, like being with friends, having good food or having fun with the family.

5. Ask for help around the house. Age appropriate chores can help children develop a sense of thankfulness.

These are some practical ideas for teaching kids to have a more grateful perspective on life. I am sure we could think of many more.

Demystifying the Jewish Holidays

Sunday, November 4 at 10:30 am If you are interested in understanding the core, universal values that flow from the Jewish holidays, come and learn with Rabbi Linder!

Yiddish Club News Starting in November, our Yiddish Club will be named The Al & Irma Feldman Yiddish Club. We appreciate all the effort Dr. Feldman put in to start and lead the club and the work of his wife, Irma did to continue the club after his death. Irma (z”l) understood Al’s love for Yiddish and worked hard to keep the club going. She recognized the importance of the club to the community even though she was not a Yiddish speaker. She was proud she had learned some Yiddish through the club and had become familiar with a variety of songs and expressions. Irma and I had become friends during the four years I was the club’s Yiddish leader. I promised Irma that I would continue the club when she was no longer able to attend meetings due to her health.

We will pay tribute to Al and Irma by sharing stories about them during the last part of our meeting on Monday, November 19, 1:30-2:45 pm. Some of our current members were part of the Yiddish club from the beginning. Others joined throughout the years. Each month we have a bit of Yiddish conversation and learn new vocabulary words. We sing Yiddish songs and discuss what’s new in the world of Yiddish. Selections from Yiddish literature are shared, a Yiddish saying is introduced, and at times we view films or have guest speakers.

Please plan to join us on Monday, November 19, from 1:30 to 2:45 pm at Temple Solel for “A Bisl Yiddish.” Help us keep Yiddish in our lives.

N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 8 / C h e s h va n - K i s l e v 5 7 7 9 7 A message from Dottie Braun-Cohen,

Coordinator of Temple Solel’s Caring Community

It is my pleasure to assume the role of coordinator of Temple Solel’s Caring Community. Since I love to cook and feed people, this is a wonderful opportunity for me to do just that. During my years in NJ, I was very active in my community and involved in several organizations that centered around helping others in need.

The Caring Community’s mission is to support the needs of our congregation who are facing illness, experiencing life challenges, or by simply keeping in touch with our students who are away from home. One of our roles is to provide meals and support for congregants who are ill or in need of assistance.

Our food preparation team is headed by Diane Schoen, who works with volunteers to prepare meals that are delivered to those in need. Joan Matlock heads our Shiva/Bereavement team, whose members are available to offer support and counsel congregants on preparing for Shiva. Our College Connections team, headed by Suzanne Swift and Melissa Gulinson, organizes the sending of care packages to our students away from home three times yearly for Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah and Passover. Audrey Sobel and several of our volunteers send get well wishes to those that are ill or recuperating from surgery or an injury.

I am looking forward to working with our caring, dedicated volunteers in serving the Temple Solel Community. You can reach out to the Caring Community by calling Edie Bradt in the temple office or by sending an email to [email protected].

Temple Solel Endowment: An Invitation to Learn and Pledge

Temple Solel launched an endowment effort in 2009 that resulted in over $1.2 million in endowment funds and led to the successful retirement of Solel’s mortgage debt. The Board of the Temple Solel Endowment Foundation is building on that success and has set another short-term goal of reaching $1.8 million (Chai) by the end of the year. Continued success in raising endowment funds ensures long-term financial stability of Temple Solel for generations to come.

We want to invite you to learn more about this process and to learn about the many options for planned giving including gifts of cash, bequests in wills, gifts of life insurance or securities, donations of retirement plan assets, and more. We are offering two different dates in November so that you can select the date that is most convenient for you:

Sunday, November 11 at 4:30 pm at the home of Dick and Fran Lamden

OR

Wednesday, November, 14 at 5:30 pm at the home of Dr. Mitzi Krockover and Dr. Jacque Sokolov

We sincerely hope that you will attend one of these two dates. If you’re unable to attend or if we should exceed the capacity in the two homes, we’ll be holding additional endowment meetings spring of 2019.

RSVP to Peter Pishko, Temple Solel Executive Director, at 480.991.7414 or [email protected] and please specify which event you will be attending. After receiving your RSVP, we will provide you with the address.

Temple Solel is pleased to host Mark Stern, Assistant Associate Emeritus Professor, ASU, who will speak about the political time in which we live. His presentation will invite questions from the audience.

This presentation examines our current time as a political time. It is from the perspective of how political science views the partisan conflicts of our time, and is not centered on a partisan analysis of our era. It will analyze this political time as an era of intense partisan balance, for the most part an overall balance of non-overlapping party strongholds. It will also analyze the

intense ideological polarization of the political public, a polarization that cuts mainly along partisan lines. Finally, it will place in perspective the substantive policy conflict that divides the body politic at the mass and elite level.

Mark Stern holds a Ph.D. In Political Science from the University of Rochester (1970) and a B.A. from Brooklyn College-C.U.N.Y. (1965). He has published numerous articles on U.S. elections, civil rights and the presidency as well as a book on the presidency and voting rights. He currently holds Associate Emeritus Professor status with Arizona State University and teaches courses independently on U.S. politics, elections and the presidency.

This provocative and interesting program is open the entire community and all are welcome to attend. RSVP to [email protected] or via call to 480.991.7414.

Social Action at Temple Solel On-going projects

StreetLightUSA: Solel volunteers sponsor a Milestone Luncheon each quarter (October 28, February 17, May 5) for girls who have been rescued from sex trafficking. We celebrate their achievements with an awards ceremony, lunch, and gifts for the girls.

Our Second Annual Solel Thanksgiving Meal Project will take place on Sunday, November 18 in the Solel kitchen. The prepared meals will benefit Saving Amy clients who are transitioning from homeless shelters and those in the Solel community in need. This year we will have 2 time slots so you can choose what works best for you. First shift 12:30-2:45 pm or Second shift 2:45-5:00 pm. There will be 8 food prep stations, lots of ongoing clean up, and boxing of meals at the end of the day. To volunteer, contact Rae Rader at [email protected] and say which shift you’d prefer. We are also looking for monetary donations to purchase the food rather than asking that you bring food items to prepare. If you would like to contribute in this way, please donate to the Social Action Fund (please designate donation to Thanksgiving Project).

Spin a Little Love: Each year Solel members generously purchase gifts or gift cards to help military families and others in need in the greater community. Look for our menorah in the temple lobby and take a dreidel with a gift request.

Jewish Family and Children’s Services Annual Holiday Party: for the second year Temple Solel will sponsor the holiday party for kids transitioning out of foster care on Wednesday, December 19 in the evening. Our volunteers will serve dinner and help clean up. Donations for this dinner can be made to Rabbi Linder’s Discretionary Fund (designate donation to JFCS dinner).

Mitzvah Day is Sunday, January 13 with many projects planned. Contact Robert Siamon for more information at [email protected].

To get involved in any of these projects contact Rae Rader at [email protected].

Navigating the “December Dilemma”

Sunday, December 2 at 10:00 am Whether yours is a Jewish home with one non-Jewish parent and/or grandparents, the intersection of Hanukkah and Christmas can be tricky to navigate. Learn from our wonderful panel of Eve Danoff, Rabbi Linder, and other panelists. There will be lots of room for questions! Come and learn!

Live Stream Reminder Temple Solel records/live streams Friday Night and Shabbat Morning Services to accommodate family and friends of our community who may be unable to attend in person. While the camera is primarily focused on the Bimah and other areas at the front of the sanctuary, others in attendance may be seen on the live stream and recorded. If you have any reservations about your image being streamed or recorded for others to view, please let someone know so that we may attempt to seat you in an area less likely to be on the live stream and recording. Please note, however, that we are unable to guarantee that your image will not appear. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

Transgender, gender-fluid, gender-free... Many people today feel that their true gender differs from the one they were assigned at birth. Some people see themselves as both male and female. Others feel they are neither male nor female. And some of us claim an original gender of our own unique making.

Amazingly, this is not a new trend. Gender diversity is a sacred value commonly found in ancient cultures. In Judaism, for example, the Torah begins with the phrase “zachar u’nikevah bara otam”—which means “from male to female, and everyone in between, God created them” (Genesis 1:27). Consequently, classical Jewish texts recognize seven different genders: ish, ishah, androgynos, tumtum, aylonit, saris, and bifney atzmo hu.

The Midrash explains that ish means “man” and ishah means “woman.” Androgynos refers to a person with both male and female characteristics. The Midrash notes that the first human being, Adam, was androgynos. Adam was composed of two bodies, male and female, joined together (Genesis Rabbah 8:1).

Likewise, the Talmud discusses other diverse genders, such as tumtum and aylonit (BT Yevamot 64a-b). It says that Abraham was tumtum—a person of undetermined gender. Plus, Sarah was aylonit—a person who was considered female at birth, but developed masculine characteristics during maturation. Additional genders in Jewish texts include saris, a feminine or infertile man; and bifney atzmo hu, a human being “unto itself.”

Overall, we can be certain that God loves gender diversity because God created so many types of people. Yet at our core, we’re all the same. We all carry b’tzelem Elohim – the imprint of eternity (Gen. 1:27). Next month I will review the book “Torah Queeries,” a collection of queer commentaries on the Torah. Torah Study meets every Saturday morning at 9:00 am in the library. Please come!
