Welcome to the first edition of ATTITUDE mag-azine. This issue will challenge, entertain

and maybe even teach you something!

ATTITUDE isn’t quite like anything you’ve read be-fore. Everyone has attitude, but not everyone has this ATTITUDE.

This month, we give you tips finding the perfect pair of sunnies, get a little close and personal with boys that dress like girls and questioning the binge drinking “epidemic”.

I’ve seen things I probably shouldn’t have seen and been places I DEFINATELY shouldn’t have been to bring you this issue of ATTITUDE, but it was all worth it!

A SoberingThoughtA Binge of WOWSEriSM

I t’s the latest scourge to plague the nation. It’s af-fecting our children, the media and even the Prime Minister. No, it’s not terrorism, teenage pregnancy or obesity. This epidemic is wowserism.

Recently there has been a rise in the number of wows-ers. Namely those who make a particularly big deal of their moral viewpoints. This has led to the present me-dia attention surrounding youth binge drinking.

Australians have always been ambivalent towards alcohol use, which has contributed to the ‘beer and...’ culture of the nation. This is the idea that a beer (or two) and footy, V8 Supercars, barbeques, are to be en-joyed together. The recipe for a good time is more or less socially dictated by flowing alcoholic beverages of one sort or another.

Contrary to popular belief, young people are not the primary culprits of binge drinking. The 2004-2005 Na-tional Health Survey conducted by the ABS found that

the the middle age groups recorded the highest propor-tions of drinking at high risk levels. This was 18% of men and 13% of women in the 55-64 year age group.

There is no evidence to suggest that young people consume more alcohol than older people. However, the youth drinking culture is a much more visible one. The 40-something man who drinks himself to sleep in an evening of over twelve beers is far less of a prob-lem than the 15 year old girl stumbling down the street clutching a blue cruiser and finding another spot to vom-it. A lot of the time the latter is doing this because her society dictates that drinking until you’re drunk is not only cool and desirable, but also a necessary transition into adulthood – a rite of passage. This cultural trend of ‘drink til you’re drunk, or til you drop’ has become a pas-sage for many teenagers. This is what is being noticed by wowsers, politicians and the media.

• 1998 - alcohol was the cause of 814 deaths and 25,207 hospital ad-missions of Australians aged 15-34.• Prime Minister Rudd has allocated $14.4 million to invest in community level initiatives, $19.1 million to as-sist young people considered binge drinkers, and $20 million to fund confronting advertising.• The Alcoholic Beverages Advertis-ing Code (ABAC) prohibits alcohol advertising from “depict[ing] any as-sociation between alcohol and driv-ing or engagement in sport”.• An ABS study of the per person consumption of alcohol by per-sons aged 15 years and over, only showed an increase from 9.77 litres in 1996 to 9.84 litres in 2006. This is only a 0.07 increase, and clearly not an entirely significant one.

THE FACTS

Alcohol advertising and sponsorship is a major part of professional sports. Think NRL and you think of major sponsors such as VB, Bundaberg Rum and Jim Beam. Think V8 Supercars and you see Jim Beam, XXXX Gold and Bundaberg Rum. Surfing is also affiliated with Jim Beam, Midori and Tooheys Extra Dry. And Cricket Aus-

tralia’s Fosters.

Hey Corrine, nice tatts!Thanks.

So how old were you when you got your first tattoo?I was nineteen, and down the coast with my friend. It was a total spur of the mo-ment thing!

What was it?An outline of a dragon, it’s only the size of a 50 cent piece.

Has your friend gone on to get pretty inked as well or just you?Yeah, she’s got a few more tatts, but not as many as me!

You have quite a lot now, what did your parents say?Dad was okay with the first one because it was so small and because he thought that the first one would be the last. Mum said no more after the first.

Obviously your Dad was wrong and you didn’t listen to your Mum! Have you got the most tatts in your family?Yep, I’m the most tattooed member of my family.

You don’t look like someone who would be so heavily inked. Are people surprised when they see it?Well, from the front I guess they would be. I don’t seem to fit the mould of someone that has heaps of tattoos, so I’d say most people are surprised.

Is there a reason why you have so many?Because I’m a Libran I felt unbalanced with one tattoo, so I evened it up with another matching dragon on the other side. Then I had to balance that with more tattoos on the top of my back.

Are you all balanced now or are you going to get more?My latest is one on my wrist that says forever, but I really want to get a vine down my back with stars either side of it. I saw it in a tattoo magazine and it looked really hot! It kind of curls around to the front and ends on your hips.

You would almost have a whole back piece then! When I die I’d like to get it preserved. Some people do that!

26-year-old Corrine Dempsey is the most tattooed member of her family and says there’s more to come!

When You’re a Queen!

Life’s a DRAG...

ATTiTUDE MAGAZINE ...15

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A guy and a girl walk into a bar. The guy orders two drinks and the pair takes a seat. They soon no-tice they are being looked up, down and over

again by a large group of men. Well the guy was anyway. The main bar was empty, the pool tables desolate.

Though there was a buzz in the club. Numerous screens hanging from the roof showed a slightly blurry picture of the scene further inside. It looked to be someone running feverishly around in a purple and yellow inflatable arena. This was no ordinary club. On closer inspection there seemed to be no other women present, the staff and pa-trons were all men. “Polly won’t get on the bull for any less than one-hun-

dred-dollars!” boomed the voice of Tora Hymen. Hymen is

the host of Australia’s Next Top Drag Queen and in a Tyra Banks fashion she always manages to steal the show. Af-ter a brief auction over $200 was raised and the excep-tionally ostentatious Polly Petrie was forced to grab the bull by the horns. Pearls of varying shapes and sizes formed a decorative

wreath around Miss Petrie’s neck. Her jewellery filled fin-gers and wrists gleaming as she mounted the bull. Need-less to say she did so in a very ladylike fashion. “Let’s give it up for Poooolllllyyyyyyyyy!” Tora shouted.ANTDQ involves up and coming drag queens competing

against one another in a Next Top Model fashion. Week eight was country theme, and as their challenge the ladies had to ride a mechanical bull. The contestants were Mable Syrup, Kiki Fetch, Prada Clutch and Laidee Babooshka. When You’re a Queen!

although, in the Queen’s eyes Troy is merely “the support act”.“I get to live the glamorous life

while [Troy] does all the hard work” says Queen Miss Left Titter.Murphy says that the Queen is

“very demanding… she’s a diva”, but every diva has her day and the Queen’s was week 8 of ANT-DQ. To the tune of Shania Twain’s “Man I Feel Like a Woman”, Titter begrudgingly hopped on the bull. Ever the diva she refused to brave it alone, taking Troy along for the ride.Troy says that “people talk to her

as if she’s a real person”.Stevie Boland aka Jennifer Blow-

pez shares this sentiment, he says that “even though [Jenny’s] only made up, she’s more popular”.

Blowpez is relatively new on the drag scene, having only come into this world in April 2007. Despite his short stint in someone else’s shoes, Stevie has managed to make Jen a bit of celebrity in her own right.Make-up, waxing, dresses and

heels are hard enough to cope with as a woman, but imagine a man having to do it all. This is the life of a queen, and it can be a real drag! Stevie thinks that the hardest

thing about being a drag queen is “hair removal…it is so annoying. If I can get away with not shaving my legs, with really thick stockings… they’re on”.He says that maintaining Jen for

an extended period would require

This was no ordinary club, and no ordinary night. The streets were littered with inviting rainbow flags waving at passers-by. There should have been no element of surprise in the evening. After all I was invited there by a drag queen puppet. “Darling, how many drag queen puppets

do you honestly know?!” says Queen Miss Left Titter. The Queen has a cult following, she is a

star of the stage and screen and has un-equalled popularity in the Sydney Drag scene. Her most recent endeavour has been as a judge on ANTDQ. The Queen is the reason I found myself at The Midnight Shift on Oxford Street at 10pm on a Thurs-day night.

In a world full of smoke and mirrors, one could be excused for thinking there isn’t many real people in the industry. However, there is nothing fake about the Queen, “not from the plastic eyes to the clipped on nails... Moi may be a drag queen puppet but these tits are real boys!”The blonde and buxom online celebrity has

her own fortnightly show “The Queen Miss Left Titter Show”. When asked about her name, the Queen says it’s quite simple, “my left titter is bigger than my right titter”.Ordinarily the saying goes behind every

great man there is a great woman, but in this instance underneath every great drag puppet is a great man. Troy Murphy is the creator of QMLT, “I am the queen” he says,

a lot of work “especially on the face. You have to have a really close shave and if you do that too often you get razor burn and ingrown hairs”. “The only bad reactions [to

Jen] come when people realise I’m not a woman.” One such in-cident was at Mardi Gras when a straight guy sat next to Jenni-fer, not realising that she was a drag queen. “This guy freaked out, he was like you’re a guy? You’re the only fucking reason I sat here, because I thought you were a woman”.

Stevie shrugs. “Every time [Jen] goes out somewhere she gets hit on”.Jen is only a small scale

amateur drag queen, but she is quickly rising up the ranks. Professional drag queens like Claire De Lune and Tora Hymen are recognised by an awards show called the DIVA Awards. The awards are a celebration of everything drag, from out-standing DIVA moment, to bitch

of the year. A celebration of the good, the bad and the downright manly - It’s an arena where a little glitter goes a long way.Sydney is the home of Australia’s drag scene and the up and

coming queen. There are even services available where you can be chauffeured around Sydney by a drag queen. Sydney by Diva, operates tours of the city, including bubbly, tasty treats and of course a hostess in drag.Oscar winning costume designer Tim Chappel is a veteran of the

drag circuit. He feels that the reason Sydney has such a great drag culture is because “It relates to the Australian idea of morality: you can do whatever you want as long as it doesn’t bother anyone else,” says Chappel. “Straight men enjoy drag as much as gay men: it’s a way of estab-

lishing your masculinity by exploring femininity,” Chappel says.

Picking sunglasses is a hard enough task in itself. Picking ones that don’t make you look like an idiot is even harder. According to the Vision Council of America (VCA) Envision Yourself program, there are three keys to choosing the

correct frame for your face shape:

• The frame shape should contrast with the face shape. • The frame size should be in scale with the face size.

• Eyewear should repeat your personal best feature (such as a blue frame to match blue eyes).

Finding a pair of sunnies that suit you will depend on your face shape, hair colour and skin tone. Firstly you have to figure out the shape of your face. The five most common face shapes are oval, round, oblong, triangular and square.

Info from - www.eyecessorize.com - Check it out!

Pick Sunnies That Suit !

TriangularHIT - Pick sunnies that make your forehead appear wider and your chin narrower. Try sunnies with square lenses, aviators with a flat top and semi-rimless glasses. Frames that are heavier on top and best suit this shaped face.

MISS - Sunnies that that sit too high on your face. This will make your forehead look narrower.

Square HIT - Pick sunnies that make the face less angular. The frames should be wider than the broadest part of your face.Like those with a round face, people with a square face should ensure that their sun-nies are wider than they are deep and top heavy.

MISS - Sunglasses that are square or angular on the bottom.

OvalHIT - People with an oval shaped face really can’t go wrong when it comes to sunglasses. They should be as wide as the broadest part of your face and any shaped lens should suit.

roundHIT- Glasses that are wider than they are deep are the best for a round shape face. This will ensure that your face looks longer. You will also find that glasses with coloured temples (arms) will also balance out a round face.

MISS - Aviators and square lenses will only further emphasise the roundness of your face - avoid as much as possible!

OblongHIT - Pick sunnies that are deeper than they are wide. This will make

your face look slightly shorter.Aviators, cats-eyes and square

lenses are all good buys, as are frames with colourful temples. The

bigger the better in this instance.

MISS - Small sunglasses that don’t cover the centre of your face, as this

will further accentuate the length.

It’s not in my nature to step on egg shells, since I would much prefer to throw them at the pavement from great heights. It could be my destructive streak, or even my general distaste for most things, but I am just coming right out and saying it. I hate Crocs. They are not really shoes and not

really thongs, and as far as I’m concerned not really cool either. Even buying the bizarre looking accessories (called jibbitz in the US) can’t redeem this fashion faux pas.The Australian website confirmed

my hatred after minutes of explo-ration. The top four “reasons you gotta have ‘em” are:

• Resists bacteria• You won’t slip off your boat• Big air ventilation ports• Friendly Italian Styling

Nowhere does it mention that they are designed for everyday use, and how contradictory is the concept of holes in your shoes that are bacteria free? But I could just be missing the

point. Further perusal of crocs.com.au led me to the most con-

trived testimonial I’ve heard since I stopped watching daytime televi-sion. The title is “I knew I was in love” and to be honest I should have stopped there. “I never believed in love at first

sight, especially in the era of mass produced goods”. That’s WTF worthy on its own merit but I will press on. “When I laid my eyes on Crocs, I knew I was in love. When

I put them on, it[‘]s almost as if they were custom made just for me... gently mo[u]lding to my feet and caressing them with love. “I especially loved those little nobby things on the sole. Thank you for making such cool shoes!” - Bjorn Y (01/06/2006, Singapore)It would be a comforting alterna-

tive to consider this as having been lost in translation. However, such

luck is probably not warranted. In that case, and perhaps more im-portantly, why does the Australian website have a testimonial from “Bjorn Y” from Singapore? I’m a little comforted that no one in this country is prepared to vouch for crocs. As well as being an eyesore,

these fashion disasters are also causing a number of unnecessary injuries to children and adults alike. A young girl in Singapore had her big toe ripped off by an escala-tor while wearing a pair of Crocs shoes. Rest assured, the makers of Crocs are said to be designing a new tag that includes escalator safety tips. What an amusing con-cept!I dare say, Crocs could just be

the worst footwear since platform shoes!Luckily I know that some people

do share my hatred for these plas-tic monstrosities, and go to great lengths to show it! I say if you hate Crocs as much as I do, buy a t-shirt. Because “Crocs: They are to your eyes what second hand smoke is to your lungs”, is making a great statement! However my personal favourite is “friends don’t let friends wear Crocs”.
