INTRO ABOUT ENTREPRENEUR

• Nitin Gupta- BTech degree in electrical engineering from IIT Delhi, MBA from New York University’s Stern School.

• Rohan Gupta- BE Degree in Chemical Engineering college in Jaipur.

SPARK IN THE MIND• The genesis of the idea dates back to 2006, when Rohan

Gupta, delighted with a prospect of his brother Nitin getting him a new laptop from the US, ventured out to sell his old machine.

• But he was offered peanuts for it.• Curious, he asked what would become of it eventually.

SPARK IN THE MIND• The scrap dealer will extract what can be reused and junk the

rest.• Concerned about the environment, he ventured to find out

what the other recycling options available where.• Nitin joined into further probe the international norms.• Their minds were made up. The crying need for responsible e-

waste recycling was a call, they decided to answer in earnest.

INITIAL STAGES OF ATTERO RECYCLING• After a year in the incubator, the idea finally to the form of

Attero Recycling in 2007.• They approached venture capitalist and got $6.3 million

dollars funding from NEA-Indo US ventures and Draper Fisher Jurvetson.

• Armed with a BTech degree in electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi and an MBA Degree, Nitin was more than sure of the value he would bring to the table.

• Together, the duo, with their competent team, developed technologies to extract precious and base metals in an environment- friendly manner.

ECO SYSTEM OF E-WASTE• A tie-up with 200-odd corporate houses feeds Attero’s plant in

Roorkee, Uttarkhand.• It process electrical and electronic equipment waste.• The sprawling 1,00,000 Sq feet plant reflects the potential of

the venture on one hand and the formidable challenge facing the nation on the other.

• To untrained eye, only the PCB, cables and wires are easily identifiable. The rest must have in its prime, formed the anatomy of AC’s, refrigerators, TV's and other white goods. Where rest saw junk

• Rohan & Nitin saw valuable materials such as copper, iron, glass, aluminum and plastics waiting to be extracted. Even gold!

ECO SYSTEM OF E-WASTE• Inside the facility mammoth separator, basically divide the

metal and non-metal components of the e-waste, occupies one of the hall’s.

• Innumerable LCD’s and refrigerators stand in a neat queue outside.

• Roughly, 75% of the e-waste insourced from corporate clients and while the rest comes from the informal sector.

EXCLUSIVE SERVICE• In a unique service launched in august last year, Attero

decided co-opt with end consumers directly.• Just log on to Attero bay and enter your handset details. The

site provides valuation for your instrument instantly.• Once the quoted amount is accepted, Attero sends packaging

material to the customer to dispatch the phone to them.• The customer can either choose to be

Paid in cashThrough a brand voucherAlternatively, they can direct Attero to plant a tree in lieu of their

phone.Since august, early 17000 phones have been recycled through this method.

Prospects of Attero Recycling• The potential of a venture such as Attero can be gauged from

the fact that at present 95% of the e-waste is being recycled by the informal sector.

• Given the growing consumption and production levels of electronic equipment in India, the amount of e-waste is bound to increase in the coming years.

• Therefore, companies that focus on e-waste recycling definitely have a bright future.

• Attero is a case in point it netted 20 crores turnover last year up from 4.2 crores the year before.

• From a 2 member team, the enterprise has grown into family of 120 with a captivation area of 60 cities.

GLOBAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

• Registered with the “CENTRAL POLLUTION CONTROL BOARD(CPCB)”, Ministry for environment and forest’s, Attero already as 8 patents under process.

• It was one of the 25 companies to be recently recognized as Technology pioneers at “the World Economic Form”

• Globally their amongst top 5 companies to extract metals in an environment-friendly manner.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES• Attero also refurbishes computers, laptops and cellphones.• After the required formatting and repair, they are supplied

back to the market with a guarantee to be taken back at end of its life.

• The initiative, needless to add extends the functional lives of the gadgets.

• It also ensures that the data on the machine, if any, remains secured.

FUTURE PROSPECTS• They are looking forward to May 2012, when the

implementation of the extended producers responsibility (EPR) will become effective.

• Soon, a host of companies would be scouting for avenues to offload their e-waste translating into moolah for enterprises such as Attero.

• EXAMPLE:• According to UN Study, found that the manufacturing of a

computer and its screen takes at least 240 kg of fossil fuels22 kg of chemicals1.5 tonnes of waterIts time we put “A VALUE ON NATURE”
