One of our members had the idea of sending ostomy supplies to victims of hurricane Katrina. Many of you brought supplies to the September meeting for this cause. I wanted to give you an update on our efforts. I contacted Friends of Ostomates Worldwide (FOW) which distributes ostomy supplies in the US and around the world. I talked to Mario Pardo with FOW and inquired about getting supplies to the hurricane victims. He stated that the Red Cross does NOT want the supplies, but they want money. He also stated, that FOW is calling all the WOC nurses and ostomy support groups in the states where Katrina victims are located. He said they have sent numerous boxes of supplies to these people. He also said that the supplies WILL be used by someone in need in the US or around the world. Put toilet paper in the toilet bowl before emptying your pouch to prevent splashing.

Remember to allow 1/8" - 1/16" between the edge of the stoma and the opening in thewafer (skin barrier). Too large an opening may expose skin to stool or urine content.Too small an opening may cause lacerations due to rubbing of the pouch or skin barrier.

Lengthy sitting in one place can force the pouch contents upwardaround the stoma and cause leakage. Getting up occasionally will help.

Many of us have lived in the Raleigh area foryears and are still confused by the I-440 beltline.Which way do you go, inner 440, outer 440 or justavoid it all together? The following should help youhave a better understanding of the beltline.

The I-440 beltline is a divided highway looparound Raleigh. The direction you would take to getsomewhere along the beltline, depends on whereyou start. Traffic on the INNER BELTLINE flowsclockwise around Raleigh and traffic on the OUTERBELTLINE travels counter-clockwise.

On the map above, there are 5 points (A-E). Ifyou wanted to travel from point A to point B, youwould take the outer beltline. To get from point D topoint E, you would also take the outer beltline. Now ifyou were traveling from point C to point B, then youwould take the inner beltline. Lastly, if you want totravel from point A to point D, you could choose eitherthe inner or outer beltline, since this is about halfway.

I-540, though not a circle, follows the same rules. So remember, inner beltline goes clockwise andouter beltline travels counter-clockwise. And if youget lost, you can always ask for directions!!!!!

Keep Charmin wipes, cut in half, to cleanout the bottom of the pouch. I travel witha box and keep a box in the bathroom.

If you use a 2 piece pouching system, before snapping the pouch on the flange, apply a little bit of baby oil to the ring ofthe flange; this will allow the two piecesto snap together with ease.

Leanne Richbourg

The By-Pass offers us a wonderful vehicle toshare our ostomy tricks with the rest of thecommunity. If you have an idea you’d like tohave included, please contact JenniferHigdon or Dan Wiley. If you find suggestionsposted here helpful, be sure to tell the personwho contributed them.

To keep up with your fluid intake, have an8 ounce glass of water, juice or sodaeach time you empty your pouch. Thiswill help you to avoid dehydration.

Jane Fellows

If you have an ileostomy, check with yourdoctor before taking timed release orextended release medications. Since youdon't have a large intestine, these medsmay not be absorbed fully, and thereforemay not take full effect.

Jennifer Higdon

We hope that Member Suggestions will be a regularfeature of the By-Pass, but we cannot do it without yourinput! If you have an idea, a special way of handling yourostomy that others may find helpful as well, please contactus! Call or send email to Dan Wiley or Jennifer Higdon, andwe’ll be sure to include your ideas in the next edition.

Do not take large volume laxatives (ex: Golytely,Fleets Phosphosoda), for bowel prep when you havea pouch. Only use a gentle laxative, if needed, forbowel prep for an exam. Bowel prep for pouchpatients can often be accomplished with a clear liquiddiet the day before the procedure, or a Fleets enemajust before an exam.Always clarify bowel prep orders with the orderingphysician and remind a new doctor or pharmacist thatyou have no colon.

Often I receive inquiries about medicationabsorption and vitamin use. For people that havehad their colons removed, it can take about fourhours to digest and eliminate food. So pelvic pouchpatients should take certain precautions whenadding new medications to their regimen.

1 -

2 -

3 -

Multivitamins are good for general health and can betaken in a chewable or liquid form, which mayenhance absorption. Chewables are available ingrocery stores, and liquid vitamins and sublingualsprays are available in many health food stores.Any medicines should be the type absorbed in the

upper intestine. Discuss with your pharmacist beforetaking delayed or time-released medications as theymay not be as effective.

Be aware that antacids containing magnesiumhydroxide combinations (such as Maalox or Mylanta)may have a laxative action and cause diarrhea. An tac ids con ta in ing ca l c i um carbona te(Tums,Titralac, Calcium Rolaids) or aluminumhydroxide (Alternagel,Amphojel) may not causediarrhea.

4 - Diuretics should be used cautiously in pouch patientsbecause they may increase the risk of dehydrationwhen the colon has been removed. You may need tosupplement the sodium and potassium in your diet ifyou are on diuretics, so check with your physician.

One of our members had the idea of sendingostomy supplies to victims of hurricane Katrina. Many of you brought supplies to the Septembermeeting for this cause. I wanted to give you anupdate on our efforts. I contacted Friends ofOstomates Worldwide (FOW) which distributesostomy supplies in the US and around the world.

I talked to Mario Pardo with FOW and inquiredabout getting supplies to the hurricane victims. Hestated that the Red Cross does NOT want thesupplies, but they want money. He also stated, thatFOW is calling all the WOC nurses and ostomysupport groups in the states where Katrina victims arelocated. He said they have sent numerous boxes ofsupplies to these people. He also said that thesupplies WILL be used by someone in need in the USor around the world. Thank you again for all yourdonations!!! - Jennifer Higdon
