FEBRUARY, 2021

I would like to begin by wishing Adelia Sergeyeva a wonderful retirement. Thanks for your years of hard work and dedication Adelia! We hope your retirement is full of fun and happiness and everything that you enjoy! As for the weather, it finally feels that winter has arrived and snow makes it official. The good news is that on Groundhog Day, Wiarton Willie did not see his shadow and no shadow predicts an early spring for 2021, so winter will carry on for only six more weeks. Due to the pandemic, this very Canadian annual event was celebrated virtually. In this month of February, we also celebrate Black History month, the achievements and contributions to the country of the African Canadians. Negotiations Committee: On January 19, we had our first virtual JIAS General Membership meeting. Three Members were appointed by the Members who were present to sit on the Negotiations Committee. Congratulations to Jim Vazirov, Nik Vlasichev, and Marina Glizer. Bargaining Survey: In preparation for Bargaining with the Employer, the bargaining team needs to hear from you. Please fill out the BARGAINING SURVEY. This survey has been created with SurveyMonkey, which is an online survey tool that helps us to gather information in an organized manner. Please help your team by filling out online this important questionnaire and submit it no later than February 28, 2021. If you would like to provide the bargaining team with additional information or concerns that are not reflected in the survey, please add your comments in the space provided at the bottom of the survey. Reopening of schools and the March Break: Elementary and Secondary schools reopened on February 16 with in-person learning. However, no changes have been received for our sites yet, and we will continue with our current delivery model. The Ontario government and the Education Minister announced the postponing of the March Break to the week of April 12. The move is intended to keep the community safe, curb travel, gatherings, and limit the spread of the Coronavirus. At present, JIAS has not issued any changes in postponing the March Break. EI Benefits: Temporary changes have been made to the EI program to help access EI benefits. These changes are in effect until September 25, 2021. One of the changes is that you will need only 120 insured hours to qualify for benefits. Please visit Service Canada website for more information.

Personal Days: As per our Collective Agreement, Art. R.2, Effective January 1, 2021, Employees on Seniority List A regularly scheduled to work 15 hours or more are eligible to receive 5 paid personal days each calendar year. Employees, on List A, regularly working fewer than 15 hours are eligible to receive 3 paid personal days each calendar year. These days are not to be used for vacation as per Art. R.3. Vacation: Our Collective Agreement states in Art. U.1.2 that those employees whose period of employment with the Employer is five or more years shall receive six percent in lieu of paid vacation. Please check your pay stub. I encourage you to refer to our Toronto Education Workers/Local 4400 website for additional information as well as helpful links and resource (login information included in this update). We appreciate any feedback, suggestions or comments relating to the workplace that can help us make the workplace even better. Wishing you and your family good health, good spirits for this winter month. Hellen Yousufzai [email protected] 416-873-8562
