Lenten Activity: Long Sleeve Shirt Campaign

The Florida Catholic Newspaper's Annual Long-Sleeve Relief (LSR) Drive will begin on Ash Wednesday, February 14 and will end on Holy Thursday, March 29. The LSR collects clean, used or new men’s and women’s cotton long-sleeve shirts that are given to local farmworker associations and across Florida to be used by our brothers and sisters in the fields to protect them against sun, pesticide exposure and other elements as they gather the food we put on our table. The LSR drive also works to create awareness of the conditions farmworkers face and the vital role they play in the economy. It easy to participate. Individuals, parishes, schools, and organizations are invited to conduct their own drives and donate shirts. Shirts can be collected and dropped off at various collection sites located within the Diocese of Palm Beach, including select offices of Catholic Charities. Locations are listed on the diocesan website at www.diocesepb.or/events or at www.thefloridacatholic.org NEW THIS YEAR: you can donate online at: youcaring.com/longsleeverelief or as always make a monetary check donation. Make your check payable to the Florida Catholic and mail to: Long-Sleeve Relief, P.O. Box 4993, Orlando, FL 32802-4993

Looking for a Lenten Fish Dinner?

During the Lenten Season when we as Catholics abstain from meat on Fridays, many of our parishes will hold Fish Dinners or Soup Dinners on various Friday nights to offer a meal and fellowship to our faith community. To find a meal and fellowship at a diocesan parish, look at our Events Calendar to find a dinner posted by a parish. Submitted events are listed for February 16 & 23 and March 2, 9, 16, and 23. Visit www.diocesepb.org/events Also view our online Events Calendar to find special Lenten talks, Stations of the Cross and Holy Week events.

Compassion Crypt Service

There will be a Compassion Crypt Service starting at noon on February 19 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach, the diocese’s only Catholic cemetery. Fr. Gabriel Ghanoum will lay to rest the cremated remains of more than 100 individuals who have no family or friends to bury them. It will be held in the outdoor chapel at the cemetery. If you cannot attend due to distance or previous engagements, we ask that you unite with us in prayer and commit these souls to the mercy of God. The burial is part of the No One Buried Alone Ministry begun in 2011. The reason the cemetery has these services is to show that every human being deserves a dignified burial as each individual is created in the image of God, and that fact does not cease with death. Some of the deceased may never have experienced respect or loving kindness. Many of them may have passed on lonely with no human contact or care. For more information or be placed on the information/contact list to attend similar services as part of the cemetery’s NOBA Ministry, call Stephanie at 561-793-0711 or visit the cemetery’s website at www.ourqueen.org or www.diocesepb.org/events

Take the Lenten Journey with CRS Rice Bowl

During Lent, Catholics pray, fast and give. It is during this time that Catholic Relief Charities (CRS) asks us to participate in CRS Rice Bowl in which we collect change in small, colorful CRS Rice Bowl boxes. Now in its fifth decade, CRS Rice Bowl offers Catholics in the United States a way to encounter Lent, to encounter the causes of migration and displacement, and to learn about the challenges faced by families around the world. Plus, 25% of all contributions stay in local dioceses to support hunger and poverty prevention programs such as community gardens, food pantries, soup kitchens, support groups, and job centers. The remaining 75% goes to support CRS’ humanitarian programs overseas, providing life-saving assistance and hope to impoverished and vulnerable communities. You are invited to share the journey with members of our human family around the world, and commit our Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving to deepening our faith and serving those in need. Visit www.crsricebowl.org to learn more how families, educators, ministries and parishes can participate. You will also find many resources such as prayers, Lenten meatless recipes, videos to watch and stories to read of how CRS Rice Bowl helps the vulnerable and poor around the world. You can learn more, ask for materials and have our diocesan CRS ministry director speak to your group. Contact Elena Garcia at Catholic Charities Office of Parish Social Ministry at 561-360-3327 or [email protected]
