World Tournament Highlights The weatherman tossed everything at the tourney from perfect to un-

bearable. He started out with perfect days and downright chilly nights and then came some more perfect weather interspersed with some gusty wind and humid heat, and ended up with three days of rain including some real down-pours that turned the place into a near lake.

The rain was a nightmare to officials and players alike and at one time the schedule was two days behind and forced an extra day of play.

Larry Croteau and his groundskeeping crew did a great job under diffi-cult conditions. Actually the court conditions apart from the weather was ex-ceptional.

The Martin- Henton game went 194 shoes, the longest game on record with Henton winning 52-49. Henton tossed 175 ringers and 80 doubles, Martin 175 ringers and 77 doubles. The game had 63 four deads and 318 cancelled ringers. All of these marks were all time world records.

Paul Focht and Marvin Craig established a joint record for the highest ringer percentage by both players when they tossed 237 ringers in their 130 shoe game for an average of 91.15%. Focht had 124 ringers for 95.4%, the highest single game mark of the Tourney. Craigs 113 ringers for 86.8% gar-nered him only 18 points.

C A N A D I A N ALSO W I N S JUNIOR TITLE Ross Stevenson of Ontario took the Junior crown back to Canada with

him, winning from a field of 69 players, the largest in history. It was not only a large entry list, but also an excellent one and probably the youngest ever. The new champion is the only one in the tip group who will be above age next year, and almost all of the others will again be eligible.

Stevenson averaged a fine 65.1% ringers, pitching the men's distance of 40 feet. Canadians also captured the two top spots in Class B, Gerald Roeder of Ontario averaging 62.9 at 40 feet in Class B.

Dan Kuchcinski of Erie, Pa. cracked the Junior qualifying record for 50 shoes with 39 ringers and 126 points and than withdrew to enter the men's competition. Billy LaBrosse of Hibbing, Minn, than threw 39 ringers and 122 points in his 50 qualifying shoes to get on the record books.

SUE G I LLESP IE IS Q U E E N FOR A N O T H E R Y E A R

Sue Gillespie won her third World title and her second in as many years, but the 18 year old Hoosier had aaything but an easy road.

Sue, who will enter Purdue University as a freshman this fall, was a great favorite with the fans, but her opponents earned the respect of both the spectators and Sue herself.

She defeated Yicki Winston of Missouri two straight games in a playoff for the title after the two had deadlocked at 6 and 1 in the round robin. The playoff scores were 50-49 and 51-42 and the Indiana girl had to come through with consecutive ringer streaks of 16 in the first game and 22 in the second game to subdue her rival. Both had 69 ringers in 96 shoes the first game but Sue hit 76.2% in the final tilt with 64 out of 84.

Except for an upset in her opening game Lorraine Thomas of New York would have made it a three way tie in the round robin, but Lorraine upset Vicki 52-40 and pushed Sue to the limit to finish third. Sue's only loss was 54-48 to Vicki in the final game of the round robin.

The Gillespie-Thomas game broke all single game records for Women, going 96 shoes with Sue tossing 76 ringers and Lorraine 71. Sue had 31 dou-bles, Lorraine 23 and there were 14 four deads.

Ruth Hammond of Michigan downed Anna Lindquist two games to one for the Class B title.

THE WORLD TOURNAMENT STORY Husky Elmer Hohl became the first Canadian to win the World title, but

he had to wait for victory in his final game to clinch the crown outright. Previously Elmer had finished 2nd in both 1963 at South Gate and 1960

at Muncie. He placed 3rd in 1962 and 4th in both 1961 and 1964, so it was a sweet victory after coming so close so many times.

With an overall record of 32 and 3 based on 84.6% ringers he lost his 3rd game to Ted Allen 46-50, his 26th to Ray Martin 18-51 and his 31st to Curt Day 20-50.

Ray Martin of Illinois and Floyd Toole of Arkansas finished only one game back, Martin getting 2nd by virtue of a higher ringer percentage. Toole was the high man in the qualifying round with 558 points in 200 shoes.

Curt Day of Indiana became the uncrowned king of horseshoe when he finished 4th after recording the highest ringer percentage for the second con-secutive year. He was only a sliver below 86% for the 35 games.

Paul Focht of Ohio ranked 5th and was the last player to meet defeat, winning 18 games before losing two in a row to Dan Kuchcinski and Carl Steinfeldt.

Carl Steinfeldt of New York finished 6th and was again the top left-hander in the event, losses to the four leaders being his downfall.

Jim Solomon of Pennsylvania finished 7th and was the tourney's giant killer. He knocked off both Martin and Toole in the 33rd and 34th rounds at a time when both were deadlocked with Hohl and a three way tie for the title loomed. Solomon also pushed Hohl in a 51-48 tilt.

Harold Reno of Ohio, the defending champion placed 8th with a 27-8 mark, losing six of his final eight games, proving that the days of repeat champion-ships may be a thing of the past.

Ralph Maddox of West Virginia post the same won and lost record as Solomon and Reno, but had a slightly lower ringer percentage.

Danny Kuchcinski, the 16 year old southpaw from Erie, Pa. placed 10th with the same won and lost record as Reno, Solomon and Maddox, thus prov-ing he is one of the truly great players and a great prospect for the future. He was the favorite of the crowd which followed him from court to court. He numbered Curt Day, Paul Focht, Ray Martin and Ralph Maddox among his victims.

Ted Allen may not be the Ted of old, but he can still throw a flock of ringers as champion Elmer Hohl, Curt Day and Ray Martin found out. Ted posted wins over each of these three top men, although he finished only 11th.

Sam Sutton of Pennsylvania won the Hal Leiber-NHPA award for the most outstanding first year entrant.

Glen Henton of Iowa dropped from his 3rd place ranking of last year, but had his moments including that world record breaking game with Ray Martin which he won.

Roy Smith, Michigan State champion, was one of the surprises of the meet and posted a fine record.

Marines Tamboer of Kansas was the hardlock pitcher, seven of his 16 losses coming in real close games. Three of these losses came by a margin of less than a ringer when his final pitch backed off the stake.

Bob May of Indiana averaged almost 80% ringers and handed Harold Reno a real setback 51-13. He was the qualifying leader for the first two days.

Glenn Riffle, Ohio, Frank Stinson of Minnesota and Joe Carmack of Mis-souri all won more than they lost and each posted at least one upset win over one of the leaders.

Hugh Rogers of Iowa pitched steady shoe all the way. John Fulton of Pennsylvania registered an upset over Jim Solomon in

in his final game. Leonard Lenigar of Ohio and Bob Toney of Virginia were two of the new

players who were surprise qualifiers, and both proved they belonged. Lenigar took the measure of Ted Allen while Toney not only knocked off Reno 50-14 but also equaled the high single mark with a 95.4% ringer game.

WORLD TOURNAMENT STORY — (Continued)

Marv Craig of Indiana helped establish a new ringer percentage record for both players in a single game and also had the misfortune to run into four consecutive games when his opponents missed a total of only 20 shoes be-tween them.

Roger Vogel of Illinois handed losses to both Toole and Solomon. Herb Pinch and Wes Kuchcinski swelled the number of Pennsylvania

players in the finals. Francis Winetrout of Washington traveled more than 3600 miles to gain

his place in the finals. Tony Sauro of New York and Jack Giddes of New Jersey, a veteran mak-

ing a comeback and the latter a young player from the newly formed Middle-sex, N. J. club were among the finalists.

Ray Miller of Ohio came to play in the Senior division but qualified well enough to make the big one.

Jim Johnson and Lee Bennett of Ohio and Arner Lindquist of West Vir-ginia all made the championship division but were handicapped by physical ailments all the way through the schedule, although none of them complained.

Terry Earley, New York City southpaw, proved that you don't have to live in a small town or rural community to be a horseshoe pitcher.

Lee Jacobs, former NHPA Secretary-Treasurer, qualified for the cham-pionship division for the first time since the 1940 tourney in Des Moines, Iowa.

Trophies and awards; The Miller Brewing Company again gave all of the place trophies in all classes of the Men's and Senior divisions, 20 beautiful trophies in all. This is the fourth consecutive year Miller High Life has spon-sored these awards.

Gordon Horseshoe Co. and the Keene Horseshoe Club donated the many trophies which went to our fine crop of Junior players.

The Ohio Horseshoe Co. put out the trophies in the Women's divisions. Diamond Horseshoe, Dixon Portable Courts, and the new American shoe

designed by Carl Steinfeldt, along wTith Ted Allen, all donated special awards. Hal Leiber's Trophies source of NHPA trophy sales, gave a number of

beautiful awards. The Arch Stokes Memorial Award went to Irwin Carlberg of Grand Rap-

ids, Mich, for his outstanding work in laying the foundations for the ever growing and prospering Wolverene State Association which is now pushing Indiana, Ohio and California for NHPA membership lead. Elmer Beller pre-sented this award in the absence of Maurine Cook and Mrs. Stokes.

On the social side the NHPA dinner, a chicken barbeque out of doors ar-ranged by the Keene Club was a delicious feat. A special NHPA party given by the club was attended by more than 200 players and members of their families. The club also arranged a special excursion to Steamtown, USA which many took advantage of.

The 1966 World Tourney will be held in Murray, Utah and the 1967 event is still open for bids. Dates of next year's tourney will be announced shortly and already indications are that Greenville, O., Davenport, la., Kansas City, Mo. and Toronto, Can. will bid for the 1967 event.

The Keene Horseshoe Club and its officials did a great job as hosts, ful-filling any need as soon as it was expressed. The tourney officials were pro-vided with a huge house trailer to serve as an office and first aid station. The bleachers were the best ever for a world tourney.

Freddy Melvin of the Keene club was a one man gang in taking care of housing accommodations, a most difficult job. Mai Georgina did a great job on publicity and public relations. Don Pickering and Frank Washer put out the best program brochure of all time.

Reggie Fish, George Buskey, Ziggie Berdinka, Lester Georgina, Darrell Flagg, A1 Boudreau gave their all, both prior to the tourney and during the action.

Editor The Horseshoe Pitcher's

News Digest During the WORLD HORSESHOE TOURNAMENT at Keene, New

Hampshire, it was my privilege to receive the Arch Stokes Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually to the person who has contributed most to the promotion of HORSESHOES during the year.

The writer recognizes that this honor should be shared equally with the Officers of the Wolverine State Horseshoe Pitchers Association, who so will-ingly contributed of their time in furthering the Sport of Horseshoe Pitching in the State of Michigan.

Therefore, knowing that this was not only an individual effort . . . but, rather as members of a 'great team' effort, I accept with deep humility this honor on behalf of all the players in the Michigan area.

The writer wishes to thank Mrs. Arch Stokes, Mrs. Maurine Cook, Mr. Robert Pence, Mr. Elmer Beller and others of the National Horseshoe Pitch-ers Association who cooperated and encouraged us in the rebuilding and reorganization of Horseshoe Promotion in the State of Michigan.

IN MEMORIAM The Mesa, Arizona club lost one of its most enthusiastic and faithful

members with the passing of George "Whitey" Leaver, on August 9. He was stricken with a heart attack. He had attended several world tournaments as well as local tournaments as long as his health permitted. He will be greatly missed by all of the Arizona pitchers, as well as by those who knew him. The sympathy of the Arizona state association along with the NHPA is extended to his wife, Ann, who also has been a real booster and supporter of horseshoes in Arizona.

The Deep River league in Middletown, Connecticut mourns the passing of the founder of the league, Mr. Fred Pearson, on July 23. He gave many hours in the promotion of horseshoe pitching in that area. The sympathy of the League and that of the NHPA is extended.

Word has been received of the passing of Mr. Fred Neal of Hull. Massa-chusetts earlier in the season. The sympathy of the Massachusetts state asso-ciation, of which he was a long time member, and that of the NHPA is ex-tended to his wife and family.

* * * •

Lester Forsyth of Cheyenne, Wyoming passed away on July 31 after a lingering illness. He had been secretary of the Cheyenne, Wyoming club and was a most ardent advocate of the sport in that area. He was state champion three times. His passing saddens many friends and he will be sorely missed by all. The sympathy of the Wyoming state association together with the NHPA is extended to his bereaved family.

For the third time Jim Solomon reigns as champion in Class AAA after winning the title back in the annual Northwest Open Horse Shoe Tournament at Glenwood Park, in Erie, Penna.

A wrestler had spent a long evening with friends at the village tavern. They showed him a quick way home across the fields, forgetting that the local bull was loose.

The bull attacked, but found itself gripped by the horns and lugged about the field until it managed to free itself and bolted.

"Too bad I had those last two drinks," said the wrestler. "I would have got that guy off his bike."

"From Out Of The Mail Bag"

Horseshoe Pitchers News Digest 1307 Solfisburg Avenue Aurora, Illinois Dear Fellow "Horseshoe pitcher":

Greetings from Molla Sani, Iran some 24 miles north of Ahwaz the capi-tal of the province of Khuzestan, the garden spot of ancient Persia.

My wife and I came here in January where I have the most interesting and challenging job of developing the Livestock Division of this growing college founded in 1955.

We have our own little college community and the recreation here is up to the individuals. The faculty staff have their own swimming pool, con-structed from the remaining concrete basin of the old oil refinery abandoned some years ago when the refinery at Abadan was started. We have the Karun River, the only navigable stream in Iran at our back door and have enjoyed several boating parties with native boats and "poling" boatmen.

As I now have the Laramie, Wyoming horseshoe pitching group well organized and actively participating in three classes and also hosting the State of Wyoming Tourney this coming August I am starting to teach the Iranians the game.

Enclosed is a snapshot of the official court recently constructed alongside the swimming pool. None had played much, but are quite interested and re-

cently a young staff member with an excellent eye, who excells at all sports, challenged me to a game if I would spot him ten points in a 21 point game. He ran the score up to 17 and I had only 11. Then he made a couple of ringers and I had to top them to stay in the game. My eye had come on and my ex-perience counted and with two suc-cessive doubles I went out on him. But this first game shows that he and others, have real good "Sport Eyes" for direction and accuracy and it will not be long until they are pitching a very good game.

I thought your publication would be interested in our court here at Molla Sani and as we gain practice and confidence, I will send you further news items.

Sincerely yours, Robert H. Burns, Livestock Consultant

Loca l Clubs The Sturgis and Burr Oaks, Michigan clubs have conducted some ex-

cellent tournaments recently. The Sturgis club were hosts to the July 17th meet. Jack Gillian, Claude West, Del Terhune, Gordy Sites, Don Drake, Jim Mack, Frank Borgert and many others wTorked like trojans to make the week-end a success. This area, like Dimondale, is bubbling over with horseshoe enthusiasm and are making great strides in court accomodations. Courts at both club sites are in constant use. Verne Fuller and Jim Davis of Battle Creek were among the visitors at the Sturgis gathering of ringermen.

Nashua, New Hampshire — Norman Durand of Nashua sent in an un-usual photo depicting a modern-art mule created by a Swiss sculptor using 400 horseshoes. However, one does not need that many old horseshoes to create some novel lamp or the like which might be salable to raise funds for local clubs. He also states that the Nashua club has 35 members using 12 courts. Their local park recreation commission is going to put in 12 addi-tional courts very soon.

Youngstown, Ohio Club likes to play singles and doubles and also team participation, using cancellation method of scoring. Last summer we made several trips to New Castle, Pennsylvania and their club came to Youngstown during the winter as we have 3 indoor courts. Harold Tuttle, World Senior Champion is our best pitcher. Then we have Earl Winsper, Joe Naples, Clair Bruce, Carl Elder and Ray White. Open house was held in November with A1 Zadroga, Jim Solomon and Jim Ohler and others on hand to help us cele-brate. Opal Corbett is our only lady pitcher and is in charge of publicity.

Dimondale, Michigan — "Hooray!" at last! We finally have gotten the women out on the courts to pitch horseshoes. How about that? Irene Grable, Mary Benson, Mabel Eitniear and Ila Smith came out and pitched last Friday evening. Saturday night Ila and Mary Benson had another session. Sunday afternoon saw Mabel and Ila going at it again. Sunday evening Bob Marsh's wife was giving him some competition. These gals should be congratulated and showed some considerable pitching ability. Keep it up, girls, and come down and get in our weekly Tuesday night club tournaments.

Funny-Bone Ticklers The following correction appeared in a country paper: "Our paper carried

the notice last week that Mr. John Doe is a defective in the police force. Mr. Doe is really a detective in the police farce."

The passenger bought his ticket, picked up his change, and walked away. He returned a few minutes later and told the ticket agent: "You gave

me the wrong change just now." "Sorry, sir," said the agent, "you should have called my attention to it

at the time." "Oh, that's okay," smiled the passenger. "You just gave me five dollars

too much."

Blexrude In Successful Defense of Sonoma

County Fair Title

Bill Blexrude of the Oakland, Calif., Mosswood Club successfully de-fended his Sonoma County Fair Championship when he posted a 12-3 score. The annual tournament was played on the newly-built 8-court layout which will be the home courts for the Santa Rosa Club. Gusty winds prevailed on both days of the tournament — July 24 and 25, which, in addition to an un-tried soil mixture in the courts, accounted for the low percentages scored.

Ottawa, Canada League Competition Growing By

Leaps and Bounds We here in Ottawa, Canada are growing by leaps and bounds. We have

organized a second 10 team men's league as well as a second ladies' league of four teams. The new ladies' league is named "Ottawa Ladies Horseshoe league." The new men's league is named "Ottawa Metro Horseshoe League."

The men's league organized in 1961, is still going strong with 8 teams and it is called "Ottawa City Horseshoe League." The ladies' league organized in 1963, is still operating with 6 teams and is the ladies section of the Ottawa City Horseshoe League.

We are quite pleased to say the least, as it is beginning to look like we, here in the Ottawa Valley could become one of the best horseshoe pitching centers in Canada in a very few years, as we already have 13 organized leagues in 10 towns within a radius of 70 miles and by the looks of things, we could have at least 3 more leagues started this summer and several more to come.

As it stands today, we have over 500 players pitching in organized leagues in this area and all this in 4 short years as previous to 1961, we didn't have any organized leagues whatsoever in the Ottawa Valley.
