Congratulations to all of the participants in the 2017-18 Inventor’s Fair. Esko had 60 students in the 4th-6th grade program, and there were 150 Esko and Cloquet students total.

The Carlton County Inventor’s Fair began three years ago after the state-wide Inventor’s Fair program, sponsored by the Northeast Service Coop-erative, was cancelled. Cloquet, Esko and Moose Lake have par-ticipated in competitions over the past few years.

The participants followed a sci-entific method to define a prob-lem, create a solution and then present it to be judged by official judges, patrons of the Lumberjack Mall and their peers. Students spent over two months planning, prototyping, re-engineering, and preparing for this day.

Destination ImaginationDestination Imagination has had an

amazing year in Esko Schools. The pro-gram has doubled in size this past year from 5 teams to 10 teams. There is a new coordinator of the program, Gretchen Grover, who has worked hard learning all the intricate paperwork involved with the program and recruiting wonderful coach-es for the teams along with massive fun-draising efforts. DI had parent coaches, high school student coaches and even a coach from Cool Kids staff. During the 2018 Great Lakes Regional, the 5th grade team The Octoporpuses won and are headed to state! The 7th grade team, The Dragon Fruit Dominators won and are also going to state! The 6th grade team, The Happiness Destroyers won and are moving on to state competition as well. The 4th grade team, Powerful Penguins came in second place in their division. The 4th grade team, Champs got third place in their division and also won the DaVinci Award for most creative prop! Esko also had 2 rising star teams made up of students in first grade and second grade students who participate but don’t compete for place until they are part of a third grade team. Congratulations to all of our amazing students and the wonderful adults who guided them throughout the season.

Read All About It!Motherhood is hard, and lately, I’ve

been finding a lot of encouragement in reading parenting books. I think it’s nice to find validation in how I feel about and approach motherhood. Did you know that most of what you’re feeling as a parent is COMPLETELY NORMAL?!

My most recent read was “Mother-ing with Courage,” by Bonnie Comp-ton. “Mothering with Courage,” aims to help readers become a mom “who listens more, worries less and loves deeply.” I appreciate this book because each chapter ends with a series of guided journal questions for you to self-reflect on your own moth-ering journey. Many times, readers are asked to reflect on their own child-hoods, and I at least, have been able to make many connections between my past and how I parent today. The book is engaging and interactive, and gives so many practical tips and encouragement for healthy parenting. It has helped me to understand how my actions and reactions can shape my children, and has given me insight into what their little minds and bodies may be going through. Every parent needs a little help sometimes. I recommend this book everyone - I’m sure dads can find some tidbits in here too!

MHS Cycling League

The CEC Mountain Bike Team had their inaugural year in 2017 as part of the Minnesota High School Cycling League (MHSCL), which operates under the National In-terscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) guidelines. The MHSCL mission is to build strong bodies, strong minds and strong character through cycling, regardless of abil-ity level -- #morekidsonbikes! The team had a fun and successful first year with a co-ed team of 15 reg-istered riders from 6th-12th grade. They had 8 riders compete in 5 rac-es along with more than 1,300 other student athletes from over 100 Min-nesota schools at locations across the State.

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton’s Mountain bike team welcomes any 6th-12th grade students who are in-terested in Cross-country Mountain biking, no experience necessary and rac-ing is not required. This co-ed team begins their prac-tice season in July where as a team they explore many of our amazing mountain bike trail systems. As the riders build skill, endurance, and confidence they will also learn trail etiquette, bike maintenance, and trail stewardship. The training peri-od leads up to the race season which

includes 5 races in September and Oc-tober ending with the State Championship Race in Mankato.

There will be an in-formational/registra-tion meeting held in the beginning of May – Watch the May is-

sue of the Esko Corner for details. For more information on the league, check out their website at www.minnesotamtb.org or www.nation-almtb.org. You can also reach out to CEC’s Head Coach Matt Hagelin 218-591-9611 or Ashley 218-591-9910 with questions.

Five Core Principles:• Inclusive – all team members

participate in scoring for the team. No racer is cut from a team

• Equality – both male and female racers are treated equally and race on the same courses

• Strong mind – students report a better sense of focus and purpose through racing

• Strong body – learning to ride and race mountain bikes creates fit-ness and increased strength

• Strong character – sportsman-ship and concern for fellow racers are top goals of the program

Mock CrashEsko High School will be con-

ducting a Mock Crash on Thurs-day, April 23, 2018 to raise aware-ness for students the dangers of distracted driving. We are working with the Esko Fire Department, Carlton County Sheriff’s Dept., and Essentia Health to put this on. Please do not be alarmed when you see a crashed car, ambulances, fire-trucks, a Lifelink helicopter, and Atkin’s Funeral Home all in front of the high school on that day. It is all part of the re-enactment of a crash caused by distracted driving. Between 8:30 and 11:00 the turn around in front of the high school will be closed to traffic, and the scene will be set. Roads surround-ing the school will not be closed. There will be emails sent to all stu-dents’ families and press releases sent as well. We just wanted to make the Esko Community aware of this event in advance.

our different activities we have offered such as dissecting owl pellets, making bubble gum and rock painting. Also February was I Love to Read Month and we had a lot of awesome visitors come and read to our children. We had Sheriff Rob and Sheriff Lisa, many Wilderness players, Josh Hendrickson from the fire station, Sarah Johnson from the US postal service, Carly Hawkinson and Kristin Hiller from Jay Cooke State Park, and a few high school students even joined in on the fun. We very much appreci-ate and thank those individuals for coming in to read. If anyone ever wants to come and read or craft with the children we would love to have you.

We are looking forward to our summer pro-gram not only for warmer weather but for the exciting new activities and field trips we plan to offer this year. We will continue to have field trips on Wednesdays, and are inviting some very interesting presenters to come to our program on other days of the week. Elementary teacher requestsIt is already time to start thinking of next year…

There is a Teacher Request Form that will need to be filled out if you wish to request a teacher for your child for next year. This form can be picked up in the elementary office. One form will need to be completed for each teacher request

(one per student). This form must be completed and turned into the office by Friday, April 27. Please remember that we hold the final discretion when completing the class lists. Requests made after April 27 will not be granted.

CLiMB theaterCLIMB Theater joined Winterquist Elementary on Monday, Feb. 26 and Tuesday, Feb. 27 to present classroom lessons on Diversity. In these lessons, students learn that differences make life richer. Even though someone might come from a background that is different from what is familiar, students will discover that they have more in common with their peers than they might think, and see that diversity is to be celebrated, not feared.

objectives:1. To introduce the concept of commonality.2. To identify the attributes, tastes, and activities that students have in common.3. To share scenarios in which prejudice is shown.4. To explore the consequences of prejudice.5. To encourage students to be accepting of others.

Robotics Team

This past weekend, our 5690 Subzero Robotics team competed at the Lake Superior Regional FIRST Robotics competition. Putting our innovative skills to the test we managed to make a name for ourselves on the field. Since kickoff six weeks ago we have come a long way in developing this year’s robot so that it may be a perfect fit for the theme: POWERUP; the game for the competi-tion motivated our hard work through the season as seeing it all pay off is most rewarding. Competition took place at the DECC in Duluth; starting

on Wednesday with pit set-up, the competition went from practice matches on Thursday to qualification rounds on Friday and final matches finish-ing off Saturday. There were sixty-three robotics teams represented at our Lake Superior Regional and we were able to climb efficiently to the front of the mix. We had many supporters cheer us while we competed, and us-ing her cheerleading skills to our advantage, Ava Busko donned Captain Cold and led our team spirit. In honor of our esteemed teacher Ms. Blake we decided to name our robot Blake25 so as to encompass the determined and impactful woman she was to bring that same energy to our team.

There are any aspects of robotics that allow us to be able to be where we are. Apart from building the actual robot planning and strategy have to reflect in the way we approach the competition. We are fortunate to have a great learned experience in this area so we are able to have an efficient effective strat-egy department that help make decisions in terms of

alliances and how to actually design the robot. We were pretty successful in creating a four scale elevator robot that allowed us to place the power cubes on the varying levels of the switch and scale components in the game. The scouting that our team did while we were in the stands cheer-ing on our team gave us information on what is working successfully and not so successfully, at the same time as checking out the competition. Our drive team, made up of seniors Logan Mills, Karl Habig, Hunter Messner, and Riggs Olson, as well as sophomore Skylar Wholing, were able to ma-neuver the obstacles of qualification matches and land us an alliance with the sixth ranked team from Appleton, Wisconsin NEW Apple Corps team 93. While we faltered in the quarterfinal match, losing by a mere 6 points, we are looking forward to using this experience to help us compete in Iowa. This year we also had the privilege to mentor the rookie team from Carlton, Doomsday Dogs Team 7041. Guiding them through the season and their first regional competition at LSR we were able to see them grow as a robotics team and be successful in their quest to do well at competi-tion. While their numbers may be small they didn’t let that stop them from making a name for themselves and winning the Rookie Inspiration Award.

As we enter into the next stages of the season we have an event on April 20th to raise funds to help maintain a competitive robot this season, and to continue our FIRST/STEM outreach activities. Making advances in the STEM field of study and giving kids the opportunity to explore this side of life is one of the goals we are attempting to achieve through this ex-perience. With this in mind all of the partnerships that support our 5690 Subzero Team help us achieve our goals and we are ever so grateful for this. We couldn’t do it without everyone’s support and appreciate all of the opportunities you are allowing our team on a whole.

NoticesSchool Readiness / PreschoolIn addition to Community Education’s School

Readiness program, Esko school district is for-tunate enough to have several other options for preschool.

The Little Barnyard preschool program accepts students from age 3 to 5 years old. They offer classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 9:00-1:00 for $309 per month. They also have Tuesday and Thursday classes from 8:30-11:30 and 12:30-3:30 for $160 per month. Little Barn-yard preschool offers hands on learning experi-ences with nature on a hobby farm. Activities include painting and harvesting a garden, rais-ing baby animals, milking goats, nature play and hikes, and cooking projects. The development of the curriculum and environment for learning is inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach, which allows children to be constructivists in their own learning. Enrollment begins at the end of Janu-ary for the following summer and school-year session. If you would like to be notified when there is an opening, contact April Hepokoski to be added to the contact list at [email protected]. Check this program out online at www.thelittlebarnyardpreschool.com or on Facebook at The Little Barnyard Preschool.

Little Eskomo Preschool located in St Mat-thew’s church accepts students that turn 3 by September 1st. The Little Eskomos program is a Christian-based preschool licensed to serve up to 20 children at a time. The school accepts registration from potty-trained 3-5 years of age. Little Eskomo Preschool’s schedule allows time for teacher-directed activities as well as child- initiated activities, through the use of music, games, stories, dramatic play, small motor ma-nipulatives, large motor equipment. We also plan field trips. We help children increase their physi-cal, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being. We assist families in bringing up their chil-dren tenderly in the training and discipline and counsel of the Lord. The 3 day per week class is $145.00 per month and the two day per week class is $95.00 per month. You can enroll in the program online or attend the open house on April 30th 6:00- 8:00. Call 218-879-3570 with any questions.

Mini Mo’s Child Care and Preschool

Mini Mo’s preschool program is open to chil-dren between 33 months and 5 years of age that encourages hands-on, minds-on playful learn-ing. Mini Mo’s uses Early Learning Success preschool curriculum as a guide in the daily structure, but also focus on connections, man-ners, respect, and other skills we find important for entry into Kindergarten along with academ-ics. Mini Mo’s will be Parent Aware rated by mid summer, and offers before and after school care through the fully licensed child care center. The cost of the program is $200 per week for full-time preschool and child care. Enroll or ask questions online at minimoschildcare.com.

Saturday, March 3, was an excit-ing day for 12 Esko students. For the past several months, they had been researching an historical topic of interest and producing a project to display their findings. March 3 was the date for the Northeast Re-gional History Day event held at UMD.

Esko students produced five ex-hibits and two documentaries. All of the projects needed to relate to the topic of Conflict and Compro-mise in History. The depth of their knowledge and the high quality of their workmanship was truly amaz-ing.

Gwen Lilly and Rachel Amireault completed an exhibit on Jesse Ow-ens, Madison Hurst and Anja Maki completed an exhibit on Duke El-

lington and the Jazz Age, Con-stance Pagan completed an exhibit on Jerusalem and the Crusades, and Dillon Rust completed an exhibit on the Korean War.

Aiden Lewis qualified for state with his exhibit on the Harlem Hellfighters, Alexandra Aker, Lilly Mae Rud and Elsa Mowers quali-fied with their documentary on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, and Matthew Deltano and Jason Amireault qualified with their doc-umentary on the Antarctic Treaty.

Congratulations to all of our His-tory Day participants, and good luck to our state qualifiers who will compete at the University of Min-nesota on Saturday, April 28.

Community News

The girls of Troop 4146 are put-ting together their first community project. They want to make a posi-tive impact with their surrounding communities and decided that they could do this by collecting dona-tions for two local groups that they feel passionately about.

Bin #1 will be donations for Beth-any Crisis Center. Items needed in-clude snow pants size 4T to 8, snow boots of all sizes and waterproof gloves and mittens (no knitted ones please).

Bin #2 will be donations for the Cloquet Animal Shelter. Donations needed are food and cleaning sup-plies, blankets and toys.

Donation bins will be located right outside the community educa-tion office from April 3rd to April 16th.

Each girl was asked to put into words why they wanted to do this type of community project:

Keira- I like to help to help peo-ple. I want people to have a good life and be dressed properly for winter. I also love animals and love taking care of them.

Mikayla- I like animals and like taking care of them. I like help-ing animals that are hurting. I like to help people out that don’t have enough money to have a house or clothes.

Briley- I want people and animals to have fun and have a great life!

alyssa & taylor- We want to do-nate to animals because we want to make them feel safe. We also want to donate to kids to help them and their families feel safe and happy.

ahna- The Bethany Crisis Shelter is a safe place for kids, from baby to 17 years old, to go to be safe. They always need donations and you can

help. If you think there is no prize in donating, well the prize is making a sad kid happy.

Please donate today!!
