Welcome back to all our families and a big welcome to all our newcomers. We welcomed our new Reception children as well as Matilda, Morgana, Alannah and Ella last week and they are wonderful additions to our school. The children all look very smart too in their fresh uniforms and shiny new shoes - well done to mums and dads for ensuring they are dressed and ready for school. Can I remind you to ensure everything is labelled as we are already looking for misplaced items. We also welcome Miss Fusco who teaches Year 3 in the mornings; and Mr Zaki, our enthusiastic sports apprentice who is supporting all the classes and will be leading an after-school dodgeball club from next week. We have all returned to school energised and excited to be embarking on the next stage of our journey to ‘Good’, ensuring the recommendations of OFSTED are implemented and the improvements made last year are embedded and consolidated further. Hopefully you saw the article in the Herald - a lovely positive note at the end of term.

Our Catholic Life We began the new school year thinking about how we will ‘Make a Difference’. The children and staff have collaborated to produce a wonderful display of starfish in the foyer. This was inspired by a short video which can be found here and is well worth a watch! The Boy and the Starfish. The SMC team work together, with everyone doing their bit. We likened it to making a jigsaw; one piece on its own is useless but if we all put our pieces together, we will assemble the full jigsaw. We may not think our one solitary piece is important or ‘worth it’ but without every single piece, the jigsaw could never be completed. We like to think of our wonderful school community in a similar way because by working together, we will be successful and the main beneficiaries of that success will be our children! Our Start of Year Mass was also a lovely celebration on Wednesday. Father Sunny and several parishioners joined us and Owen did a fantastic job as altar server - well done Owen! We are very proud of you!
Our RE topic is CREATION and the children will be thinking about their responsibility towards God’s wonderful, awesome world and how God asks us to be ‘stewards’, caring for the world for generations to come. We have been invited to join with Torquay Girls’ Grammar School who have started a Parliamentary petition to try to ensure that their voices are heard. See below for further detail and watch the video here watch our video - What a way to make a difference!
BRIXHAM THEATRE “CELEBRATING YOUNG ARTISTS” COMPETITION AND
EXHIBITION
and the winners of the ‘In the Sea’ competition are: Millie B, Toby, Harvey and Owen E for their wonderful batik designs and Piper, Kara, Ollie and Kendae from Class 1 for
their beautiful sea-themes pictures.
Well done to these budding artists!!! The exhibition takes place on 21st September in Scala Hall between 10am and 4pm.
There is ‘fun, games, crazy crafts and Magician Mr Cosmo’ to entertain all ages. The award ceremony will start at 1.30pm, all

Dance Classes Please contact [email protected] if you would be interested in street dance classes for your children. These
are starting in October at Torbay Gymnastics and are open to children from 2-16 years of age. There are free taster sessions
on 1st and 4th October. Keshia will be coming into school to do a demonstration and to provide us with leaflets so watch this
space.
Immunisations
As you are all aware, our children are susceptible to many illnesses and infections and we all want them to be safe and well.
The immunisation team will be shortly offering the Flu vaccination to all primary children from Reception to Year 6. This
involves a simple nasal spray. In order to provide consent for your child’s Flu vaccination, please access the consent portal
(https://schoolimms.virgincare.co.uk/flu/2019/devon and follow the online instructions. Please provide consent before 27th
Oct.
Please feel free to sit quietly for a moment in our prayer space after dropping your children
or before you pick them up.
Next Week’s Theme: Found!
Guardian Group would like to invite parents/carers and
parishioners to get involved with some of the exciting plans
they have. Please email [email protected]

PENCIL CASES We would like to thank you for equipping your children so amazingly well with pencils, rubbers, highlighters, rulers, glue
sticks… This has really helped towards relieving a little of the pressure on the school’s finances which we can invest in other
resources in order to provide your children with the quality of education they deserve. We realise of course that the
children love the fun rubbers and pencils available but sadly these aren’t always the most effective. It is important that the
children use HB pencils in order to support the development of their pencil grip and their cursive script. The sparkly
notebooks and really large pencil cases are difficult to manage as they don’t fit in the children’s trays and are proving a
distraction when on their tables. Geometry sets with compasses are not necessary for children below Year 5. Thank again
for your support with this matter.
Meet and Greet Wednesday 18th September
Please come and meet your child’s new teacher after school on
Thursday. Teachers will do a short presentation to share class
information and expectations with you and you will then have
the opportunity to chat informally to them and to share any
information regarding your child.
Clubs Clubs start next week from Thursday 19th
September. Check bookbags to find out which
club your child might be attending.
Earth Song
Torquay Girls Grammar Schoolare starting their year off with a campaign. The students are very agitated, as our children are, about climate change and want their voices heard. To this end, they have started a Parliamentary Petition and have invited local primary schools to join the campaign. To promote this, they have made a short video called Earthsong 2019 (see link above). On Friday 20th we will be come together here at SMC to film the children singing the song and we will then send our video to our local MP. As the song goes, “We didn’t start the fire, no we didn’t light it but we’re trying to fight it.” Please support this initiative.
VOLUNTEERS Needed! As you are aware, our pupil numbers have fallen off in recent years. This means that our funding has also greatly reduced. Together with the national funding challenges, this makes it increasingly difficult for us to facilitate off-site activities which take staff out of school and away from the other classes. We love to take part in the festivals at Brixham College but our attendance is dependent on having sufficient staff to acocmpany the children. If you can help in any way either with trips/outings or with hearing children read in school, even for an hour a week, please come and speak to Mrs Gibson or myself. We really do need your help. Thank you! School Dinners Polite reminder that children now in Year 3 need to pay for school dinners unless exempt. This is because the government only subsidise school dinners for Reception and KS1. Please make sure you pay in advance via the portal www.feedinghungryminds.co.uk or pay Mrs Gibson at reception as late and non-payments lead to further strain on school funds. If you think you may be eligible for Free School Meals, please speak to Mrs Gibson who will give you the information you require. This is very important because not only do you get the support you need, but the school also benefits from extra funding.
