God’s Work. Our Hands. on Rally Day is Grace’s kick-off for another year of service to our local and global neighborhood. Stewardship Snippet

September 3, 2017 (13th Sunday after Pentecost, Year A; Proper 17) Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.” –Matthew 16:24-25 Jesus’ words encouraging self-denial may sound strange, even foreign, to us. Our

culture stresses just the opposite – self-indulgence in the extreme. The spiritual practice

of self-denial, such as fasting or voluntary simplicity, helps followers of Jesus develop

a healthy relationship with God, with neighbor, and with their possessions, enabling us

to be more loving and giving.

Special thanks to Carol Case for organizing and providing snacks

on Sunday mornings between services. If you would like to provide snacks

for fellowship, please see Carol on Sunday morning to sign up.

Each week we ask someone to bring a baked good, fresh fruit, or drinks.

Your participation is important for this ministry to continue.

Thank you,

The Congregational Care Team

So that members of the congregations can get to know others better, we are featuring some

of our newest members in biographies gathered by Brenda Hayasaka, Grace Biography

Editor. Thanks to Brenda for taking on this task and thanks to those who have agreed to

share their stories. Enjoy!

† Our Grace Family †

Sue and Joe Hurlburt Sue and Joe Hurlburt, Lancaster residents for many years, have been attending Grace for over three years, coming from St. John’s Episcopal. Both retirees enjoy Celtic music, Scottish dancing, and duplicate bridge. In their family are three children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren as well as their beloved Corgi named Bree. Sue, an avid reader is a member of Grace’s book discussion group, especially enjoys mysteries and biographies. She is also an active member of the choir at Grace. Using her skills as a former ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher for the city schools, Sue helped to settle many refugee families and is now helping our Grace family from the Congo to transition into the community.

Joe, who is a retired engineer, lists his hobbies as woodworking and photography. He has taken photographs for us at our Annual Neighborhood Cookout and our church picnics. Joe also helps out on our workdays sponsored by the Property Team.
