“Longitudinal Study of the Market Penetration of Cockpit Weather Information Systems” (A research grant by

This study focuses on modeling market adoption of new products and optimizing the product development decisions in avionics sector by tracking and analyzing the market dynamics of cockpit weather information systems over a three year period. Worked as a key team member in the following research projects: “The TAMDAR Decision Support System” at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia (A research grant by NASA Langley Research Center).

• Designed a spatial decision support system for TAMDAR, a new meteorological data collection system, which is currently being developed by NASA. Specified, designed and tested software and accompanying graphical user interface.

• Worked on a variety of projects as a part of NASA's Aviation Weather Information and Communications Research Team. Published a number of reports and papers and presented these studies to different audiences.

• Member of the Aviation Weather Information and Communications Research Team, which is the large group of researchers who work on weather information systems at NASA. In April 2002, this team was selected by the NASA Office of Aerospace Technology for an Aviation Safety Award, the highest award from the Aeronautics division of NASA.

“The Feasibility Study of TAMDAR” (A research grant by NASA Langley Research Center).

• Conducted economic analysis of TAMDAR system.

• Prepared web-based expert surveys and conducted statistical analysis.

• Presented the findings of the research in a number of meetings.

Other Professional Service Activities : 2008-2009: 2008 Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education Principals Meeting, The

purpose of the gathering is to provide a forum for open discussion among the eighty-six National Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education; update the Centers on IA efforts and opportunities at the national level; discuss the role of higher education in securing America's Critical Information Infrastructure; and promote collaboration among the Centers to maximize expertise and resources. Russell, Christine Co-PI. Integration of Shared Presentation Virtual Space in STEM courses-May 2008 ($88,000) National Science Foundation, to fund implementation and study of an innovative, online and real-time course delivery system, Shared Presentation Virtual Space (SPVS) in engineering and math related courses. This grant is an interdisciplinary effort between the Department of Computer Science, Department of Math, Department of Biology, and Department of Technology Systems. SPVS is a virtual reality space designed by ECU’s computer science department that can run using low tech Internet access. (Funded)

ECU First Annual Second Life Training Academy-June 2008 ($1,000) to join ECU’s first adopter training program for development of course material and use in ECU’s Second Life environment. This was a multi-disciplinary group of 15 faculty trained to teach and encourage other faculty on campus to incorporate Second Life technology where appropriate. Associated Second Life project was the design and building of a Technology Law Center on the in-world campus with a teaching courtroom, a classroom, and a legal research and communication space. Building was done in conjunction with ECU staff and students trained to build Second Life environments. The courtroom was used Spring 09 for a live mock trial in law classes. (Funded)

ECU Letter of Intent to Submit Grant, NSF Partnership for International Research, to fund study analyzing use of global classroom technology in international research settings for scientific inquiry. This grant will gather data about attitude change and cultural diversity (referred to OSP for possible funding from other source)

Distance Education Innovative Use of Technology-March 2005 ($19, 527), to fund equipment for use as a mobile global classroom allowing students to access archived and synchronous video and audio of classroom sessions (Funded)

Institute in Teaching Writing Intensive Courses-April 2004 ($750), to purchase individual equipment and teaching related materials. (Funded) Participants in project also receive title of Writing Intensive Course Consultant and are qualified to consult for outside schools and departments about development and training of faculty for writing intensive courses.
