Welcome from the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders

The Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders welcomes you to the Atrium Art Gallery and the hundreds of pieces it contains on a rotating basis.

Designed to fill the need in Morris County for a location for artists to exhibit their work, the gallery offers four floors of atrium and lobby space for exhibition in the County of Morris Administration and Records Building located on Court Street in Morristown.

The exhibitions have been viewed by hundreds of residents. Indicative of the support the Gallery has received from artists in Morris County and throughout New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, is the long list of advance bookings and ongoing requests to exhibit.

The Art Gallery started in 1977 in a small waiting room in the former County Administration Building, now the Courthouse Annex. In this room, the Morris County Heritage Commission held numerous small exhibitions of paintings, prints and photographs by well-known New Jersey artists. The Heritage Commission continues to contribute artwork to the Atrium Art Gallery.

In January 2008, at the request of the County, Morris Arts assumed oversight for planning exhibitions at the Atrium Gallery.

As you walk through the corridors viewing the artwork, the Board of Chosen Freeholders is certain you will enjoy the exhibition and be enriched by its contents.

Thomas J. Mastrangelo, Freeholder Director

Morris Arts, located in Morristown, NJ, is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1973 dedicated

Arts Unbound

Arts Unbound (AU) is a non-profit organization founded in 2000. We are dedicated to the artistic achievement of individuals living with physical, developmental or mental disabilities, and seniors. In the simplest terms, we are an art gallery and educational art studio for people with disabilities and seniors. Yet what we are doing, through the arts, is challenging the stigma and barriers that keep people with disabilities from participating in the workforce. We are dismantling the link between disability and poverty, which are so often mutually reinforcing. We are preparing talented individuals to be self-employed, working artists contributing to our community, and our economy. People with disabilities often are directed to low-wage jobs or sheltered workshops. They usually are not encouraged to seek a career in the arts, or to express their creativity. As the National Disability Rights Network says, “thousands of people with disabilities are being paid less than the minimum wage and/or work in isolation and segregation in programs which lead them nowhere.” We promote careers in the arts because artistic self-employment should be option for people with disabilities or special needs. Arts Unbound works with artists to ensure they have equal access to resources and can express their own creative vision, rather than be isolated and controlled. Likewise we recognize that mere age does not denote reduced capability. All seniors deserve to live fulfilling and productive lives, and as such, we support seniors in this capacity by providing access to our educational studio, its gallery, as well as bringing our programs directly to seniors. Arts Unbound works with learning and emerging artists with disabilities and seniors through our two core programs, visual arts education and artist development. For more information visit the Arts Unbound website at http://www.artsunbound.org.

ARTSee ARTsee is an artists' network primarily located in Bernardsville and Basking Ridge, which was founded in 2010 upon the fortuitous meeting of two artists. After living and teaching art in Asheville, NC for several years, when Caren Frost Olmsted returned to her hometown of Basking Ridge, NJ, she missed the Asheville experience of being surrounded by art, constant creativity, and the inspiration that fellow artists provide. When Caren was introduced by a mutual friend to Bernardsville artist and art educator Gail Mardfin, Caren proposed, “How’dya like to start an artists’ studio tour with me?” And the rest is history! In 2015, on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, October 3 and 4, twenty ARTsee artists will open their home studios and other locations to offer the FIFTH annual ARTsee Open Studio Tour. Visitors create their own self-guided tours, much like a garden tour or historic house. Last year, close to 500 visitors took advantage of this opportunity. On display in the Atrium Gallery is a sneak preview of some of the work by ARTsee's painters, photographers, and mixed-media artists. Also included on the Tour are three-dimensional artists: ceramicists, jewelers, and sculptors. These visual creators are welcoming, happy to answer questions about the processes they use, and to sell their work to the public. Throughout the year, monthly meetings are held in ARTsee members’ homes, where information about exhibitions, workshops, marketing, and new ideas can be shared, and critical feedback on works in progress can be solicited. The group continues to attract more artists, with leadership changing from year to year. Our mission is building camaraderie among area artists and promoting our vibrant arts community. For more information please visit http://www.ArtseeTour.com. To purchase artwork, please contact Gallery Director, Dr. Lynn L. Siebert, at [email protected].

MYHELAN ARTISTS NETWORK Myhelan Artists’ Network is a supportive group of artists that meet in each other’s homes, attend art related events and exhibit together. Native American linguist Lucy Blalock gave Myhelan its name (mah-hay’-lon), which means, in the Lenape language, “a gathering together of people.” Long Valley based artists have been meeting since 1997 and over the past 15+ years the group has expanded to include all of Northern New Jersey. Members share knowledge and techniques while fine tuning their skills though informal, laughter-filled critiques that encourage and enrich individual creative pursuits.

A wide range of media is represented including: painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, beaded adornments, textiles, mixed media and mobile art. The artists maintain a web presence on Facebook, for insights please “like” our page at http://www.facebook.com/myhelanartistsnetwork. The group has exhibited at the Atrium Gallery five times through Morris Arts, as well as at various other local venues.

Participating artists include: Hema Bharadwaj Elmer Dey Mef Gannon Kim Griswold Kathleen Kirchner Jean Leight Kristina Lloyd Sher Weston Stec John Tetz Marianne Trent To purchase artwork, please contact Gallery Director, Dr. Lynn L. Siebert, at [email protected].

BLACKWELL STREET CENTER FOR THE ARTS In 1983, a group of local artists interested in establishing a permanent space in which to exhibit their work founded The Blackwell Street Center for the Arts as a cooperative gallery in Dover, New Jersey. Over the years, the group evolved, becoming a nonprofit corporation in 1989, with the additional aim of providing education and information on fine arts to the public in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops and community programs. In 1996, the Blackwell Street Center for the Arts became an internet “cybergallery” under the web name of “Blackwell St. Artists,” shedding its physical location but remaining dedicated to its mission of exhibiting art, educating the public about art and providing opportunities in the visual arts to the larger community, especially students. Its members continue to mount exhibits at various venues throughout the metropolitan area. In recognition of its work over the years, The Blackwell Street Center for the Arts has received grants from the Dodge Foundation, Casio Corporation and Morris Arts. One of this organization’s most outstanding contributions and important legacies in the arts is its annual Blackwell Street Juried Student Exhibit which, over the past 27 years, has grown enormously in size and scope and developed a reputation as one of the most prestigious exhibits for student artists in New Jersey. During the two-plus decades that this exhibit has existed, nearly 15,700 works of art by approximately 1,800 young artists have been selected, juried and professionally exhibited. Additionally, BSCA has sponsored Hispanic and Irish Art exhibits; participated in First Night on New Year's Eve and has mounted exhibits at Lever House Gallery (New York City), Johnson & Johnson, Nabisco, and the Cork Gallery (NYC), to name just a few prominent examples. Member artists work in a variety of media and styles. All membership applications are juried by the current members. For information or to join, call (973) 337-2143, visit the website at: www.blackwell-st-artists.org or write to: Blackwell St. Artists/ PO Box 808 / Denville, NJ 07834-0808 On May 12, 2011, The Blackwell Street Center for the Arts received the coveted Outstanding Arts Organization Award from Morris Arts for its outstanding work in promoting visual arts and particularly for its now 27 years of mounting the Blackwell Street Juried Student Exhibit.
