Another Fall Aire

the adopters. All of these key people

need to be involved to make an event

like the Fall Aire Frolic successful and

a benefit for our Airedales. We have a

list of the wonderful donors in this

newsletter.

Many volunteers helped with set up on

Friday. Everything went smoothly.

Around 5:30 p.m. we took a break and

enjoyed a scrumptious dinner catered

 by our very

Eash who

 brought us an

Italian dinner.

We had our

The weather Saturday was over-

cast and raining in the morning

 but cleared by 11 a.m.

We had an adoption on Saturday.

Mary Jo Koranda and her foster

girl Zelda announced they just

couldn’t part and Zelda lovedher new Mom. That was a won-

derful announcement and Zelda

was with her Mom and very happy.

We had a “family reunion” on Saturday

as two former foster girls who were

Many people came from hundreds of

miles away to join us for the day. We

had Airedale lovers from Canada,

Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana,

Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, and

of course Wisconsin. The coordinators

who made the trek were: Diane Taylor,

Linda Miklusak, Tom Gaines, Bob

Seis, Terry Kratchman, Peggy

Flyte, and Barbara Durance.

Board members present were

Alison Lang, Connie Versagi,

Terry Kratchman and Linda

Miklusak, and newsletter edi-

tor Susie Widmar.

Judi Jach came with many dog

beds and a million toys for all

of our foster families. Many of

the coordinators took

some with them to pass

on to their foster homes.

Thanks to Teri

Stegemeyer who made

beds for the dog bed cov-

ers donated by LandsEnd. Jane Davis, retired

employee, contacted

Lands’ End and acquired

many dog coats and towels for

our foster ‘dales! Many volun-

teers baked such yummy treats

for Alma’s Sweet Sensation

Shoppe as well as our fabulous

lunch. Joe Miklusak once again

used his culinary expertise to

serve us a fabulous lunch. Janita

Sweet Sensation table. John Weber and

our very own Vanna —Mary Jo

Koranda — got the crowd bidding on

all the fabulous items. Bob & Denise

Seis lugged, hauled and dragged all the

items for Annette’s Airelooms includ-

ing the heavy, concrete statues.

Bob McArthur manned the volunteer

table and displayed a new promotional

 board made for pet

fairs and events by

Tom Livick and

Jackie VonBehren.

Carly Roofe, Jackie

VonBehren, Van

O’Brien, Jane

Davis, RebeccaLyshoir all worked

together

to get

everyone

checked

in for the

day’s

event. Alison Lang, Kim

Androw and Wendy Paquette

operated the cashier’s table

all day. Teri Stegemeyer dida great job keeping every-

one’s tummy full. Jill

Springborn and Jani and

George Egan worked the

crowd with the sale of tickets

for the doggie dish raffle.

Mary Mallek made sure you

saw all neat items to pur-

chase like dog beds, etched

glasses and dog treats atFuzzy’s Boutique. Sue Stagg

did a grand job on all the t-shirts that

were embroidered with the festive

FAF logo.

Bruce Hauck, Sherra Elmer and Susan

Dickson did a great job in capturing

the day in pictures. Karen Dallmann,

Barbara Durance, Carly Roofe, Kathy

Harrison and Lesli Weber helped to

distribute all the winning items on thesilent auction tables. Karen Dallmann

did a great job running the Airedale

games with me this year. All the

‘dales took home new toys and treats

just for them! The big job of clean up

went smooth and quickly with all the

people who stayed and helped stack

chairs, fold up tables, sweep the floor

and take out the garbage.

Now I’d like to share with you the

“numbers” from Saturday, Sept. 11: We

had 155 people registered for the

event. Our total for the day’s event was

$20,000!

We are still waiting for payment from

the professional photographer and pos-sibly some additional donations.

In all, it’s a total that is amazing con-

sidering the economy. We are very

lucky to have the support we have in

our organization and it IS because of

each and every one of you!!

Fifi 1998-2010Condolences to Taffy Ross, Fifi’s mom.Taffy is a valuable and skilled home vis-

itor for ATRA in the St. Louis area.

What a transformation Winston has gone through since Steve Dahlke of

Wisconsin adopted him. Winston, 5, lived with an older couple and a

small dog-friend. The man of the house ended up in a nursing home. The

lady loved Winston dearly but could not walk him and he had a very

small yard with electronic fencing. Winston was petrified of being

zapped so he got little or no exercise. Congratulations to Steve andWinston. They walk

every day and Winston

loves to play with other

dogs and has a tremen-

dous amount of energy

now.

Steve says: I don’t

think I’ve done any-

thing special.

I feed him a mix of the

salmon and weight

management dry food.

Half a cup in the morn-

ing and at night another half a cup mixed with a scoop of canned Atlantic

salmon dog food.

He gets carrots when I have dinner and he gets his treats. A Purina Dental

Bone every morning when I leave for work and another at the end of the

day. He also really like Beggin’ Strips…”Bacon..Bacon”

We go for a walk twice a day (every day, I have not missed a day :-)).

At first he could barely make it around 2 square blocks, but we’ve built itup a little at a time. Now, the route is

over a mile. I walk and he’s able to do a

lot of running and squirrel chasing.

Once we go off of daylight saving, we’ll

probably only go once a day, so I’ve

tried to make sure I get his weight down

 before winter.

In the evening, I spend time on the

floor with him and he does get his “lap

time.” On weekends, we just do stuff.

He may get three walks or we’ll go vis-

iting, clean the house or do yard work,

but he doesn’t get to sleep all day. He’s

usually a tired boy come Sunday night.

The weight had to come off. A fat old

dog is a dying dog. He is going to live a

long time! The weight loss has made

him feel better and he is happy. People

(friends, relatives, people we walk with,

.. etc.) all comment on the fact that he issuch a happy dog.

Update: Winston

Winston, May 2010

I do feel proud, but it’s also my reward. He

filled the hole in my heart and he helps fill my

life with joy. I too, smile a lot with

him. He gives me, as much as I give

him. I’m lucky; he came already

trained. In all honesty, I don’t’ think

I’ve had to discipline once. I’ve

learned the commands he was raised

with and he obeys them. He’s easy.

I really mean it when I say he’s a great

dog. He’s my boy!

A note from JB & MaryEllen Lyon...We adopted 'Barkley' approximately 3 years

ago from your organization. Your representative Terry Kratchman, Kansas City,

was the coordinator with Barb Oimas. Barkley has seamlessly fit into our lives

and occupies a very special place in our hearts. Some of his little quirks have

been cause for much speculation. He loves sirens and will reverently howl; he

wants mom and dad during thunderstorms and will react (non-violently) to the

'racking of a pistol' (we occasionally target shoot). He LOVES our grandkids and

occasionally, in his eagerness to play, knocks them over. Hey, dust yourself off

and get back up!! They have Malmutes, so are used to big dogs, but ours are

more fun. Thank you for the blessing in this big goofy dog. His presence fills our

hearts and house.
