Lipid Metabolism: The Glycerol PathwayLipid Metabolism: The Glycerol Pathway

Glycerol:1.Is detached f r om the tr iglycer ide por tion of  f at

2. Glycer ol is then conver ted into

glyceraldehyde-3- phos phate

3. Glyceraldhyde-3- phos phate will then enter into glycolysis

4. Like glucose, it is conver ted into

acetyl CoA, and then enter s the K r ebs cycle

22 Carbon Fatty Acid«.

Part 1. Acetyl-CoA

=Carbon chain/ 2=22/2

=11 Acetyl-CoA

Acetyl-CoA (1 tur n) K r eb = 12 ATP

Part 2. NADH+H+/ FADH2

= # Acetyl-CoA - 1

=10 molecules each

Ther efor e, total ATP par t 1

= 1

2 ATP x11

Acetyl-CoA = 132 ATP

Total= = 182 ATP

In ETC- 1 NADH+H+ x 3 ATP + 1 FADH2 x 2ATP = 5 ATP

Ther efor e, total ATP par t 2

= 5 ATP x 10 = 50 ATP

132 ATP + 50 ATP

= 18 ATP (Glycer ol) + (3 x ATP f r om 1 car  bon chain)

= 18 ATP + (3 x 182 ATP) = 564 ATP

A Summary of the breakdown of Glucose«A Summary of the breakdown of Glucose«

Lets star t with 1 glucose molecule and see how many ATP we

 pr oduce  by  br eaking that down

(1) GlycolysisGlycolysis

- Will yield 2 ATP and 2 NADH+H+

Assuming enough Oxygen is present in the cell «.Assuming enough Oxygen is present in the cell «.

The final pr oducts of  glycolysis, 2 pyr uvic acids, will enter

the K r eb¶s cycle,

However the pyr uvates must under go a µintermediate step¶

(conver sion into acetyl CoA) which will pr oduce 2 NADH+H+

The Krebs Cycle

- Each Acetyl CoA will go thr ough one cycle, the total will  be

2 ATP¶s, 6 NADH+H+

and 2 FADH2

Page 19: Atp Review

- The 6 NADH+H6 NADH+H++ and 2 FADH2 FADH22 f r om the K r ebs cycle will go on to the ETC to pr oduce a total of  22 ATP22 ATP

Don¶t FOR GETDon¶t FOR GET

- Glycolysis made 2 NADH+H2 NADH+H++,  these pr oducts pr oduce 4 ATP4 ATP

- The µintermediate step¶µintermediate step¶ of  the K r ebs Cycle also

 pr oduced  2 NADH+H2 NADH+H++ and this will make 6 ATP¶s6 ATP¶s

A Summary of the Breakdown of Glucose
