Unumgängliches Wahrzeichen von Brüssel und Belgien mit großer touristischer Anziehungskraft, einzigartige Verwirklichung in der Geschichte der Architektur, und symbolischer Nachlass der Weltausstellung in Brüssel (Expo 58), ist das Atomium heutzutage die beliebteste Attraktion von der Europäischen Hauptstadt.

Das Atomium stellt ein 165 Milliarden Mal vergrö-ßertes Eisenkristall dar, eine Anspielung auf die Atom-kernkraft, eine Energie die damals in vollem Aufschwung war und die man für friedliche Zwecke benutzen wollte. Das Atomium verkörpert heute noch diese gleichen Gedanken über Zukunft und Universalität wie während der Expo 58. Das Ausstellungsprogramm des Atomiums wurde dann auch in diesem Sinne vorbereitet: welche Zukunft möchten wir für morgen? Wovon hängt unser Glück ab?

Unavoidable icon of Brussels and Belgium, important place for international tourism, unique creation in the history of architecture and emblematic vestige of the World Fair in Brussels (Expo 58), the Atomium is the most popular tourist attraction of Europe’s Capital.

It symbolizes an iron crystal, magnifi ed 165 billion times, referring to the power of nuclear energy in full development at that time and which was intended for peaceful use. The Atomium continues to embody its ideas about the future and universality, half a century later. In its cultural program it carries on the debate of 1958: What kind of future do we want for tomorrow? Our happiness depends on what?

Die Besucher können fünf von den neun Kugeln besichtigen.

In einer Kugel befi ndet sich eine permanente Ausstel-lung die der Expo 58 gewidmet ist. Eine andere Kugel ist für zeitweilige Ausstellungen reserviert, wo Wissen-schaft, Fortschritt und Zukunft eine Rolle spielen.

Die oberste Kugel bietet eine wunderschöne Aussicht von der Stadt Brüssel und Umgebung. Bei schönem Wetter trägt die Sicht bis Antwerpen.

Das Restaurant - ebenfalls in der obersten Kugel - ist jeden Tag bis 23.00 Uhr geöffnet.

2970 Dioden beleuchten das 102 Meter hohe Ato-mium und bieten ein beeindruckendes Schauspiel.

Five of the nine spheres are open to the public.

One of them is housing a permanent exhibition dedicated to Expo 58. Another sphere is dedicated to temporary exhibitions with scientifi c themes.

The upper sphere offers spectacular views of the city of Brussels. When the sky is clear, the view reaches till Antwerp.

The restaurant, also situated at the top, is open every day till 11.00 p.m.

The nine spheres are lit up with 2970 lights that offer a very special show.

Expo 58: die Ausstellung Diese Ausstellung zeigt Ihnen anhand von Archiv-

material, Bilder, Videos, und verschiedene Pavillon-Modelle wie prestigevoll dieses unvergessliche Ereig-nis in 1958 war.

Für manche Besucher ist es die Gelegenheit um dieses bezaubernde Ereignis wiederzuentdecken; für die Anderen, die nicht mit der Expo 58 vertraut sind, ist die Ausstellung eine Begegnung mit dem Traum, der auch heutzutage immer noch dem Atomium eine magische Ausstrahlung gewährt.

Das Atomium wurde von André Waterkeyn entworfen, und stellt ein 165 Milliarden Mal vergrößertes Eisenkristall dar. Die neun großen Kugeln, mit einem Durchschnitt von 18 Meter, sind miteinander durch 20 Röhren ver-bunden, und werden von drei riesigen Trägern gestützt. Die Architekten André und Jean Polak waren für die Einrichtung der Kugeln verantwortlich.

Designed by André Waterkeyn, the Atomium symbol-izes an iron crystal, magnifi ed 165 billion times. The nine large spheres, connected by 20 tubes, are supported by three enormous pillars and dominate with a height of 102 metres the entire Heysel plateau. The spheres, with a diameter of 18 meters, were fi tted out by the architects André and Jean Polak.

Het symboliseert een ijzerkristal dat 165 miljard keer is uitvergroot, verwijzing naar de macht van de atoomenergie die toen in volle ontwikkeling was en die men voor vreedzame doeleinden wilde gebruiken. Het Atomium wil nog steeds de ideeën over de toekomst en universaliteit gestalte geven. Het tentoonstellings-programma van het Atomium werd dan ook in functie van de gedachte van 1958 opgesteld: welke toekomst willen wij voor morgen? Ons geluk is afhankelijk van wat?

Cinq des neuf sphères sont ouvertes au public.

L’une abrite une exposition permanente dédiée à l’Expo 58. Une seconde est réservée aux expositions temporaires dont les thèmes tournent autour de la science, du progrès et du futur.

La sphère supérieure, quant à elle, offre un panorama aussi unique que saisissant sur la ville de Bruxelles. Par temps clair, la vue porte jusqu’à Anvers.

Le restaurant - également situé au dernier étage - est ouvert tous les jours et accueille les visiteurs jusque 23h.

In één ervan is een permanente tentoonstelling gevestigd die gewijd is aan de Expo 58. Een andere bol is gereserveerd voor tijdelijke tentoonstellingen waarin wetenschap, vooruitgang en toekomst een rol spelen.

Het panorama in de bovenste bol biedt een onover-troffen uitzicht over Brussel. Bij helder weer, reikt het zicht tot Antwerpen.

Het restaurant - eveneens in de bovenste bol - is elke dag open tot 23.00u.

2970 knipperende lichtjes geven een magisch en bo-vennatuurlijk aspect aan het 102 meter hoge gebouw.

Conçue et réalisée par l’Ingénieur André Waterkeyn, l’Atomium fi gure une maille élémentaire de fer agrandie 165 milliards de fois. Les neuf sphères de 18m de dia-mètre chacune ont été aménagées par les architectes André et Jean Polak. Elles sont reliées entre elles par 20 tubes, le tout étant soutenu par trois pilliers. L’ensemble qui culmine à 102m de haut domine tout le plateau du Heysel.
